Commons, Hartson and some real Celtic heroes

907

Had a great time at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally last night.  It was a great celebration of all that is good about our club, with thousands of pounds raised for the John Hartson Foundation.  Neil Lennon spoke warmly of John, about his courage and ability.  As well as recognising the great achievements of this season, CSA Player of the Year, Kris Commons, could not hide his disappointment that we are not going for a treble next week.  Hibs will have their hands full with him at Hampden next week.

I’ve never heard a footballer talk as John Hartson did.  He was clearly emotional as he took the microphone from the manager but soon go into his flow.  He told us about the three hours spent in the car before telling his family the diagnosis of his illness.  His achievements as a footballer are remarkable and John is very proud of them.  His absence through injury in Seville clearly hurt.  Did it pass a crucial advantage to Porto?  John thinks so.

His own failings were put out there with the disarming confidence that only someone who has climbed a few personal mountains can do.  The ‘hangers-on’, who filled his days a few years ago, had their cards marked.

Reamonn Gormley’s parents, Jim and Ann, were also guests of the Association.  Jim asked me to pass on a thank you from him and Ann to all Celtic fans for what they have done for them and the Thai Tims in the last two years.  Their world will never be the same again but the support they have received from the Celtic Family has overwhelmed them.  Your community has done very well, but there is nothing new in that.

With supporters like we have our club is in good hands.   Well done to all who carry out the thankless tasks running busses, organising fundraisers and keeping the moral compass pointing in the right direction.

Have you ordered your Willie Wallace autobiography yet? Signed copies available if you do so now……

A lot of Hibs fans hate us. Do not be misled in any way because they wear green. I’ve recently bee told by them that we are

    Terrorist loving B’s

If it wasn’t for them we’d be supporting the Huns

Our history is based on stealing things from them and been called some names which I wouldn’t want to repeat on this hallowed blog.

They also went to great lengths to point out that any Celtic supporter who thinks that there is a special bond between the two clubs is deluded. The Huns and Celtic are “two cheeks of the same erse”. We are sectarian etc.

One of them actually threatened that if their were any Celtic supporters sitting near him at the Cup Final then “they would be sorry”.

I found that they are a thoroughly unpleasant lot which is a shame because I have happy memories of mixing with Hibs fans from the 1960s and 1970s.

I was hoping for a close, high scoring final with Celtic winning, of course, but the more I think about it, I hope we skeleton them and pour on the agony in the way that their Edinburgh rivals did to them last season.

  9. My father told me of a game he was at, against Them, at CP, in 1938.

He arrived at the ground early entered at Their end, intending to make his way round to his usual spot.

However, he was hailed by a lad that he had worked beside recently, so he stopped for a chat.

They talked about the usual things; where are you working now. do you ever see so and so. That kind of stuff.

As they chatted, the ground started filling up, so, as the other guy and his mates seemed decent enough, he decided to watch the game from there.

A young Willie Woodburn was playing that day.

Anyway, Celtic had a field day and eventually won 6-2.

However, as each goal went in, he felt a push on his back. Each dunt getting stronger as the goals piled up.

It got to the stage that he was watching the game with one eye over his shoulder sd sure enough, he caught the arm coming out again.

It was his so called ex workmate.

My normally mild mannered father exploded at the liberty and caught a hold of the guy’s Frank Nitty( think Eliot Ness suits) lapels and drew him on to his advancing forehead.

He stopped long enough to see the crimson cascade and avoiding swinging boots in his direction, got lost in the crowd.

He knew that this guy lived in Cambuslang, so any time he and his mate went out there for the dancing, they left their coats handy for a quick getaway, as he hadn’t finished with the chancer.

(Un) fortunately, he never saw him again.

    Moral of the story?

Stick to your own at the fitba’.

Went to celtic v oldco at celtic park in the late 70s … my brother in law had a spare for his end…

We won 3-1 … not celebrating our goals wasnt so bad. .. being amongst them when they celebrated was murrrrder

It would appear from the Charlotte documents that Whyte owns everything hence the reason that Cardigan man and Pieman are not pushing the sales of SBs since all the monies would have to eventually go to agent Craigy………..really the end.

  13. never encountered any problems with hibs fans over the years…..its known as football rivalry…..do you expect other fans to receive us with open arms, when this team and that teams are all huns…dundee, airdrie, well, killie, herts etc….one thing about them theyve got a poor travelling support…..the same support who offered to take the GB banner from the celtic fans as it was passed round the stadium last game

It’s up a fairly stiff climb over 1000 feet …then down a stone path …took us less than an hour

We were in the zone at that time and battering on

Re Rowardenen to Inveranan ….you may be better doing Rowardenen to Tyndrum and stopping at Beinglas farm …overnight …it’s only 12m from there to Tyndrum

After Rowardenen there is a new forest road which isn’t very taxing ….we went the old lochside course …if you use the forest road it’s about 1 hr or so quicker and much less taxing

You can get the train from Tyndrum too ….get a lift to Rowardenen ..train home
