Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

  1. Not sure how valid the lead article is….. If Delia hasn’t afforded Commons any level of importance thus far…..how does K.C become important for February. ?

I also like Kris Commons, but, he is not starting games.

Keeping him beyond January will cost us around £750k

(£300k potential transfer fee and his salary)

And he will walk for nothing in summer

PL will view the better option as moving him on ?

Article was posted online this morning, and journalist makes it clear the interview was on Friday.

Also, journalist , from memory, is very very sympathetic towards us.

I don’t disagree on giving Henderson a chance but I see Liam as more of a box to box type player.

On what I have seen Allan looks best player on the park . He has already had a chance to hit big time and either blew it or couldn’t cut it. Sometimes players like that find their true level ( Danny Wilson) whilst others learn from mistakes and grasp second chance.

  4. Commons is our best player, he should be playing every week. This in my opinion is Ronny’s biggest ‘failing’.

So RD’s opinion is that Celtic are the best team in the league means he’s ‘putting his foot in it’ and what would you have said about him if he said, we are second best?

KC going now would be a disaster and give Aberdeen a shot in the arm.

I know there are those who feel he isn’t perfect and he’s not but our squad can’t do without his vision. Our squad doesn’t look anything like this anymore – Lambert, Lennon, Hooper, Boruc, Mjallby, Petrov, Lubo, the swede, Hartson, Sutton, thommo. Anything that can give us an edge is welcome and at the moment, we can be found lacking in some matches.

  11. I am slightly concerned by how we are playing. The defence has been shocking both of Dundee Utd goals should have been easily prevented.the game against RCFC was played at a pedestrian pace. We had no one willing to take a man on and cause some confusion in the county defence. We can pass the ball in front of a team all day but why would you want to do it apart from bore the opposition and the support to death.

We need width and I would like to see Anya signed.

Commons I am sad to say his day with is is done. I hope we see him play and score before he leaves. I think he is a cracking player on his day which has not been that often this season.

The support also have a big part to play away no problem at home we are to quiet we need to roar the team on not roar at them for every mistake.

I suspect Kris Commons’ time has come at CP. If he can’t be managed, coached or motivated back to something approaching last season’s form, then he’s of limited value in Celtic’s future.

  13. BSR,

imho comments like that merely antagonise opposition, and given Aberdeen beat us twice in closing stages of last season ( league and cup) I wouldn’t go handing their manager his team talk.

As for him saying we are second best, I can’t comment on something he didn’t say.

  14. Quite exciting Edinburgh Derby at 1-1 with 20 to go.

Distinct absence of square and backward passing, and a willingness to drive at opponents and take a man on. Very refreshing to watch.

  16. Willie my stay on Clyde.

Methinks he is getting put back in as a safety net should the ronni experiment fail.

  17. I’m torn on the Commons situation. He looks lost in the formation we seem to be using. His lack of pace is a bit obvious but on the other hand all these flying machines RD has brought in have bombed.

Pace is only really useful if you have space, we play against packed defences most of the time domestically.

  18. Jelly And Gelato:

At 31 I think Kris Commons is way beyond the coaching stages of his career. He is an excellent football player, he’s got guile and skill, he just lacks a wee bit of pace and likes a chip now and again.

He obviously does not fit cutely into our managers paradigm of how Celtic should play, hence to my mind, just let him go and hope for the best for our club. I just remember Kris was part of the team that mugged Barcelona.

    Quote:

Seemingly unaware that Dundee United have scored three more goals than Celtic, the manager added: “So far, we have been the best team in this league. We have scored most, conceded fewest. We were on a good run until Dundee United. If we win our game in hand, we will be two points ahead. We know what we have been doing is the best in the league, but we have to keep progressing.”

    Unquote

So, you are correct that Ronnie is incorrect in saying we have scored most goals. Though I can excuse him the faux pas. His other points about conceding fewest and being two points ahead if we win our game in hand are correct. Two out of three ain’t bad.

He didn’t say we were top of the league though, only that he thought we were the best team in the league.

If a journalist asks the Celtic manager a question and it gets straight batted, we can only expect to hear RD’s honest answer, and that’s what he gave.

You could argue he gave SMSM the perfect reply, and didn’t get the ‘woe is me answer’ they were after.

Celtic have played and beaten Aberdeen twice, as for antagonizing them, maybe he meant to, he’s never been short of confidence love him or loathe him.

  22. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

Disappointed for the youngsters today, they were out-muscled in the two games I saw. A lesson learned for the future I hope.

Good luck to Celtic on Monday. Here we go, to 4IAR.

  23. Celtic clearly operate a policy of not allowing players’ contracts to run down to zero value.

Kris has not reached agreement and will leave in January.

Rightly or wrongly he has not been in Ronny’s plans and the key issue at this juncture is preparing for Europe next season, hopefully in the Champions league.

The chances of our beating Inter over 2 games are low and we should not defer planning for next season for this tie nor a League Cup game against a very poor team.

February is much more important in terms of not dropping league points and due to playing more games than Aberdeen and United.

Anyone who thinks that we have not regressed in the past 6-8 months, ask yourself this very simple question.

We qualified for the CL group stages for several years up until last year. What chance Aberdeen, Dundee United or Hamilton Accies getting through three qualifying ties when most of these are regularly ejected at the first tilt of EL qualifying, with the possible exception of the Accies?

    Reality bites.

Don’t think Commons wants to be here, which is part of the problem. RD is trying to build a team, not a one man one, which Celtic were last season. To expect Commons to be as effective as he was last season, too, is daft. Opponents know he has no pace so stand in front of him and he can’t get of the shot. Was pretty evident from the first league game of the season against St. Johnstone.

In saying that, there are several others who should be out the door before him: Ambrose, Matthews, Mulgrew are just a few.

My concern is the board not backing Deila at this point. Most of the signings are form the lennon targets list and very few for the bill. Looks like we may all be short changed again.

  26. Allgreen

Disagree, the wingers have the capability, if my old hero Didier Agathe could skin people so can the current lads we have he had pace and could cross that was it.

What is needed is the pass to unlock those defences, Commons can easily do that, to be fair so can our other midfielders, Commons is better though.

How many players has Ronny actually brought in as he tries to build a new team?

  28. Hoopy New Year to you all.

I was out working in my Fast Black last night, and observed an upward swing in the mood of our Sevconian counterparts. For the first time in a long time, I was asked the traditional question asked of all Glasgow hacks, “are ye a Gers man, driver?”. Not once or twice, but 4 times, and it was quiet out there too!

Seems that as a result of recent events re. Sevco share manoeuvres, “the peepel” are beginning to try and re-assert their “superiority” over the rest of us.

The smug B’s, think they’re back!

  29. Sammi was an exception and even where played there were multiple posts on here about why he was being given game time at the expense of younger players. I fear Kris would be the same.
