Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

Matthews would be definitely gone. He’s one of the buckpassers.

VVD believes the hype and its shown this season. He wants away but his attitude problem is not doing him any favours. The problem with Ambrose is that he can be having a good game then he has one disastrous moment every game.

I believe competition is required for Izaguirre. I’ve been saying this for years but it’s never materialised.

Did Matrin Oneill’s Celtic not press and attack that way through the wings?

I disagree with that, any good pressing team will unlock any team eventually. We are heading in that direction.

Do you think that no youth player will ever get through Barcelona’s youth system, or Man. U’s or Chelsea’s or Real’s?

Celtic require 3 or 4 players to make the pressing game work.

Meantime we’ll have to make do with a team plays in spurts until RD gets the right guys in. It’ll take time as Celtic will not throw money at it.

  6. Cowiebhoy-Willie was in charge of reserve team that won 8 in a row, huns disbanded the league when they ran out of other people’s money

  7. Very low key reception to Dumbarton’s goal on Snyde…….from McCall,DL and Wishart strangely enough…

  8. Different kettle of fish, they have a history of bringing through players and its the backbone of those teams, yes they by big, but in those three teams (Real, Barca, Utd) they all have home grown coming through or either playing as we speak.

The last at city I can think of is now the retired Michael Jonhson, long before the money turned up, Chelsea the same, how many of their youths have ended up at Vitesse or released and sold to other clubs.

Does Matic count as a youth player? sold off and brought back in for huge money?

Celtic need two good wingers, the rest of the team going forward is good enough

after that the back 4 needs addressing as i said yesterday our CB pair in 6 months could be gone.

I think we should be aiming for a squad size of around 18, which is then supplemented by the development squad. This season that would include Henderson, Fisher, O’Connell and Fasan, with maybe one or two more given an opportunity to push into that group.

By my reckoning, we currently have a crop of approx 28 of what could be considered established players, which includes Denayer, McGregor and Forrest, as well as the 1st team squad players out on loan.

Fewer players would enable us to concentrate the budget on higher quality within those 18 players. The problem of course occurs when we sign duds like Derk and Pukki, who weren’t considered projects, but relatively speaking, star signings.

This is where loans with an option to buy can be important, players who prove themselves can be offered big contracts. Players who flop can be discarded without becoming a noose around our necks.

Too many projects scatters our resources and bloats the squad size. On the flip side, someone like Wanyama wouldn’t have arrived and developed into a £12m player.

It’s a very difficult environment to operate in.

  12. BIG-CUP-WINNERS

Yes either as a 4-4-2 (don’t care what anyone says) or a 3-5-2.

I play as a winger on either side, and you will always, always destroy the opposition running at them with the ball or without. Defences hate it, at every level.

  13. kdc,

I don’t believe Kris has had a good opportunity to get a string of games going partly due to injury and partly due to Ronnie’s countryman.

I think that our host is right when he mentions KC and making a contribution, he is probably one of the most skilled footballers we have, he lacks pace but he always has. He needs to play in a rover role with limited defensive responsibilities and with the way teams defend against us what’s wrong with playing a back three and pushing another man forward to pick up the slack.

Good to see Oor Willie back, let him scout Scotland for us as we have been ignoring Scotia for too long, many have slipped through our grasp.

How many players come through ? When youths did play in a better environment (Wullie McStays words recently at Greenock)

We are still now winning the under 20 league, how many coming through

And I do agree with Wullies return, I would have him replace J Park, and find 1st team players, put J Park in to find youths, after all, that was allegedly where he excelled (I right)

I don’t know everything, far from it, but I do know this, from first hand experience, both Man City and Chelsea burst their guts trying to bring through home bred talent. Then they just get greedy in the money mad game we follow.

  16. Enjoyed the edinburgh derby there.

Hibs better of the teams in my opinion.

First time watching allan .. nice tidy footballer but not good enough for celtic. Thought dylan had a great 20mins when he came on. Probably a better all round player than Allan but as I said its my first time seeing allan.

Big cup- I haven’t played or managed at any level.

    Robert88

Width is good but I’d like another player in the middle of the park with brown. Think a midfield enforcer type is what’s needed. Basically what Kayal could have been if not injured so often.

Forrest can give the team width but the injuries have wrecked him. His final ball isn’t great but getting him to the byline and getting the ball in could be effective. The left side is a problem. All too often Izaguirre wastes opportunities with a poor final ball. The competition for a place could make him buck up his ideas.

  18. kitalba

They don’t have to though… I would also say they do not afford these lads the opportunity as many others do and to their advantage.

It doesn’t matter where our players come from, as long as they cut it.

  19. chrisvancoupon

Disagree re Izzy, he may waste chances like any other player, he is consistently our highest Assister along with Stokes and have been in previous seasons, something people often over look.

The enforcer is Brown in my opinion, we need a more cultured midfielder and we have him in Commons alongside Stefan. that’s your three midfielders then put in two decent wingers/backs flying up and down you are sorted.

Efe as the sweeper, add in what Centre backs we have currently or purchased in the future.

  20. Robert88:

So mate pause to think, just for a moment, over the years, let’s say for arguments sake, the last twenty years, how many first team Celtic players have come through our own system?

I feel Commons time at parkhead is up. He’s just doing through the motions.

A concern of mine is that teams can put three passes together and get through. Think there needs to be someone next to brown who can tackle a bit better than him.

  24. Robert88:

If you want to put a list together of successful football players who have come through Celtic’s system to play and establish themselves in a Celtic team I’d be most interested.

  26. I believe that we need to bring in / promote players for across the back line.

Matthews looks a completely different player to when he first came, especially after his injury.

Izzy can bomb forward but his crossing leaves a lot to be desired. As for his defending, he gets caught out too many times by his opponent.

Ambrose just scares the living daylights out of me and i wait with baited breath for that mental moment he invariably has every game.

Lustig is quite injury prone but when fit i’d have him fight it out with Fisher for that spot.
