Commons, one of the most influential Celtic players of the decade

441

We’d heard all about Kris Commons when he arrived from Derby County in January 2011, his was a was a name which had floated around the ‘One to watch’ lists for a while, but we didn’t know what we were in for.

In scoring 11 goals in our 14 remaining league games he put up a one man title challenge.  That was the last league Celtic lost, so it remains an open wound, but without Kris’ it would now have been contested.

The music stopped the following season as Kris went until April before opening his account – a fabulous chip as we waved Rangers a goodbye and good-riddance at Celtic Park, but he was back on track the following year.

That season Kris played all 8 games in our Champions League run to the last 16, scored 11 in the league and created a further 12.  There was always a feeling that Scottish clubs had to sacrifice players with flair when playing tier-one opponents, but Kris got his start in the historic game against Barcelona and gave his team-mates a valuable out-ball.

Probably the most important goal he scored in his life was the opener against Shakhter Karagandy in the 2013 Champions League play-off round.  Shakhter were 2-0 up from the first leg and 45 minutes had passed without the breakthrough when Kris collected the ball.  His shot in first-half added time from fully 30 yards swerved away from the keeper into the corner of the net.

The Ronny Delia years will be remembered, among other things, for the manager’s apparent reluctance to use a traditional no. 10, but results determined that Kris was called on.  He scored in four of the five Europa League group stage games he played in last season (we only scored five in total in those games).  A player who appeared to be written-off was clearly indispensable.

The Brendan Rodgers era started with Kris long-term injured, having turned 33, and in the last year of his contract.  Now fit, opportunities to break into a team which looks like breaking records are slight, so joining Neil Lennon at Hibs is an obvious move.  It should work out for both of them.

It’s an emergency loan deal to Hibs, so Kris remains a Celtic player for now, but there’s a good chance the he’ll move permanently when the window opens next month.

Best wishes, Kris, without doubt one of the most influential Celtic players of the decade.

  1. Apparently Boyd may have said the gap is not that big.Reminded me going along in the 80s and most of 90s.We used to kid ourselves on this would be our year but deep down we knew apart from the maestro they had the better players. But we lived in hope. How sweet it is to see the tables have turned. They died trying to equal what we achieved but they never did.We have better players, better stadium, infinitely better run and they can only hope.Never forget the suffering we endured fellow tims.Beating them Year after year is something of I will never tire.Celtic v old/New Rangers more than just a football match

it is being reported that Chinese club, Hebei Fortune, have offered Lionel Messi a 5 year contract with an after tax salary of 85 million pounds per year ….

do they not know they could get Waghorn for almost that?!

(sadly, I did not make up the first part … its a mad world)

  3. May I suggest that in the competition to be launched in around 50 minutes time you avoid any thoughts of selecting Hamilton!

  4. Kris Commons… what can I say?

Pound for pound the best signing since Lubo in my humble opinion.

He didn’t only deliver on the park, he delivered off .

Not a Celt by birth, but definitely a true Celt in actions.

A fantastic ambassador for our club and a tremendous benefactor of many good causes.

Both him and Lisa really took Wee Oscar to their hearts, welcoming him into their family.

I doubt we’d have qualified v Karaghandy if he hadn’t broke the deadlock at that time.

    A monumental goal.

Kris & Lisa… thanks for the memories

Based on thems Huns version 16.90 winning 2 nil at moment and given we only beat HA 1 nil then with the powers of deduction, inclusive of thems being away and us being at home then thems Huns version 16.90 would have beaten The German Team, Barca and Man City home and away scoring 43 goals conceding zero and likely with fair refereeing go on to win the World Cup.

  6. Cant see anything happening here but desperate times call for any sort of hope and so my mine drifts back to one of Craig Browns theories – that there is nothing more dangerous (nothing, I say) than a losing lead. No matter the sport.. Mon the Accies!

  7. Hamilton are a complete shambles. Playing with a back 3, it is a mess. They may well be tired but there was 80 yards of space for Tavernier to run from one box to the other.

  8. VFR: I would be interested in of those tickets, if possible. Someone coming over is looking for one.

Best to text me as I won’t have access to email in the morning

  9. What a week for Sevco, especially after Phil Phil Neville Neville (put on your dress!), gave the Big Lie such a boost, telling Shearer, who was trying to explain to him how Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez ARE world-class, but Zlatan, at 35, WAS world-class, that there is no difference between the past and the present.

“Was/Is, no difference”, he said to a baffled Shearer.

Suppose when you come from a family that finds it hard to distinguish between forenames and surnames. . . . .

  10. Rhetorical question – How old are most of you?

It’s all right, I know the answer from many’s a great time in your company, however, this is for the under 50’s:

The also rans have now officially reverted to type!

They will ‘Die in a ditch’, ‘Take one for the team’, ‘Fly into tackles’ and battle for 95 minutes against us and get the slippers and pipe out for the rest of the season against Sevco. It was always thus, I know there are historic exceptions but we all know what Exception proves?

They only have to take points off each other to survive, play well against us to give their fans hope and make a token effort against themselves to avoid embarrassment.

They only need us for ticket and pit money. They don’t need Europe – they budget without it, and it might cost on Players wages and ground upkeep in any case. They live with the TV money and won’t rock the boat.

We will have to win his from the front, fight in every game. Our nearest rivals are now a protected species.

Nope. We’ve only won 2 games in a row a few times this season. Nowhere near as consistent.
