Commons phenomenal contribution

You will remember times, not so long ago, when a successful Celtic team went 15 months without keeping a clean sheet away from home in any competition, even against lower league opposition. Already this season we have achieved what until recently was regarded as beyond the club, won two games away from home without conceding.

Helsingborgs are not of the calibre of opponents Celtic can anticipate facing in the group stages of the Champions League (assuming no bizarre reversals), but they disposed of the Polish champions 6-1 on aggregate in the previous qualifying round and are as resourceful as Aalborg or Utrecht.

There was plenty to be pleased with in last night’s but the most striking element was the performance of Kris Commons. He scored goal and was credited with an assist, has scored both our league goals this season and had a further assist against Helsinki; an incredible return for a player who three weeks ago was drawing comment on the size of his shorts!

  2. Sorry for the typos – blackberry lag – would also add that Celtic currently have c.7m debt, champions lleague is not guaranteed yet but we’re in a good place. I expect to see at least 4-5m spent this year. We’ve been out of it for a bit and there is uncertainty in scottish fitba, but we do need to keep the prospects coming through.

  3. lennon’s passion, wholeheartedly agree that the blog allows us to see some dark neurosis from several people as they develop over the years. You and I can be happy we are not afflicted.

    Agree also that we are targeted by trolls. This is an online reality for most sites. You and I can be happy we know this and are not drawn in by their game.

    We can also be very proud of the work of CQN’ers. Finally, we whenever we are troubled by a comment anyone can complain by emailing me about an offending comment, celticquicknews@gmail.com. Which someone did regarding your recent comment. Deleted, language.

    Seems likely that this is your stone: An Clachan Memorial

    Perhaps the simplest and most unusual monument in Kelvingrove Park is the inscribed boulder commemorating “An Clachan,” one of the most popular displays from the 1911 Scottish National Exhibition. The three-acre “Highland Village” alongside the Kelvin was filled with blackhouses and but-and-ben cottages (complete with peat-burning fires) and was populated by Gaelic-speaking pipers and cotton-spinners, all assembled to depict the primitive — yet still extant — traditions of Highland life. Like the rest of the Exhibition, the structures of An Clachan were merely lath and plaster and thus were not intended to survive beyond the end of the season. Today, the memorial boulder is the sole relic of Kelvingrove’s last Great Exhibition.

    If you’re looking in mate, yesterday you made comment about the Guardian. Had my first (of many) Herald-free days today and found the Guardian an excellent newspaper, as you suggested. Obviously lacking in-depth coverage of Scottish football, but that’s why we have CQN and News Now Celtic. One stand out letter which would NEVER be published in the Herald read –

    “One of your letter writers castigates the Scottish government for banning a ‘traditional song disapproved by the authorities at a football match’. He fails to mention that the song’s key line is ‘We’re up to the knees in Fenian blood, surrender or you’ll die’. Since when was violent ethnic or sectarian hatred happily twinned with freedom of expression?”

    “Aberdeen is up to its neck in debt, yet somehow can afford £40m for a new stadium and training facility? Or are we taxpayers paying for it?”

    Can anyone believe that booking for FF for time wasting after 33 mins?

    =============

    Only one minute added at end of first half ……. so how much was wasted by FF.

    watching the game again on the itvplayer, excellent quality and I dont know what I was so worried about last night, even Kayal wasnt as bad as I first squealed, most had a bad spell during the game, its just a pity some of thise bad spells overlapped

  14. Talking of square sausage, the local butcher in the village makes a version of the trad square, it’s round, but as close to the real thing I have found outwith scotland.

    stop bragging, its been in the high 40’s over here aw summer, Fahrenheit that is, ;-)

  16. I cannot agree with all the criticism of Gary Hooper. I thought he led the line well last night with a lot of unselfish running off the ball and closing people down. Held the ball up well and even won a few headers One criticism would have been giving away silly free-kicks trying to impose himself physically on the Helsinborgs centre halves. All in all I thought he had a good game as it is a hard shift up top on your own, I also note the manager singled him out for special praise.

    If anyone deserves criticism it would be our back 4 who let Helsinborgs into the game with a number of sloppy mistakes particularly from Mulgrew and Matthews. However a 2-0 away win is an excellent result and it is still early in the season so plenty of time to improve.

    iki,

    in the second half Helsi… keeper retained the ball longer than the offence, the crowd won that award

    A wee bit of verse for ye

    O, for a draught of vintage! that hath been

    Cool’d a long age in the deep-delved earth,

    Tasting of Flora and the country green,

    Dance, and Provençal song, and sunburnt mirth!

    O for a beaker full of the warm South,

    Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene,

    With beaded bubbles winking at the brim,

    And purple-stained mouth;

    That I might drink, and leave the world unseen,

    And with thee fade away into the forest dim:

    Has your sister got any recommendations ,or has she whispered in your ear that she has a sweet spot for a certain brand,I better state that summa of sammi’s sister works in a distillery,or something similar,not making out that she likes a tipple.
