Competing with the crazies

1382

News that Hull City had a £6m bid for Robert Snodgrass accepted took the wind out of my sails this morning.  Snodgrass was one of the outstanding performers for clubs in the bottom half of the English Premier League last season, so it’s easy to understand his ticket price, despite only having a year left on his Norwich City contract.

He is a Celtic fan and has not hidden his desire to play for the club, but Hull City (good grief) are now bidding £6m for players from relegated clubs, after spending £8m on a Spurs squad filler.

This all begs the question, can we afford to compete with Hull City?  Probably, yes, but we can no more afford to splurge £14m on a couple of players than Hull, who a year ago were reporting debts close to £80m.

We’re operating in an environment where indirect competitors for players are spending unsustainable amounts of money, pretty much like Rangers did for 20 years under Sir David Murray.  For a few years after Fergus left, we played the same game as Rangers, running up millions of pounds of losses year after year, before pulling away from the edge, while they kept the pedal to the metal and careered into liquidation.

The decision not to match the Bank of Scotland money flowing into Rangers cost us trophies, and caused a great deal of dispute in the Celtic family, but story ended sweetly.  So, so, sweetly.

The crash may never hit England, but the job for Celtic is to find a way of remaining competitive in the Champions League while matching income to expenditure.

The crash will come one day to England and agreed sooner the better, thats not down to jealousy either! Its ruining football in Europe. Its not just the SPL thats affected, theres lots of other leagues with the same problem as us. We will continue to do the right thing, boom and bust isn’t a good business plan, other teams try and match the spending at it goes tits up,

The league move is always going to be on the agenda but i just cant see it, but it may happen, the championship and lower English leagues are duff and are littered with teams that have attempted to go for the holy grail and failed! Some sort of league reorganisation may come in england and at that point we will possibly be invited but until then I cant see us going anywhere.

Sometimes you have to realise that even though you can prove your point, you are still wrong.

The only way to have a contrary view such as yours accepted and considered is to ignore subjects which would jeopardise that.

“And, to think that PG played in the 1st team for what? 13 years?”

    I know!!!

And to think that was back in the day when you used to attend and support too!!!

If playing Peter Grant, a journeyman centre mid, was not outrageous enough to make you give up on Celtic, you’ld have to wonder what horrors could possibly persuade you to depart?

Instead of Peter Grant we now have to put up with Nakamura, Hartley, Robson, Wanyama, Brown, Commons, Ledley, Biton, Johansen, Mulgrew and Henderson.

It’s too much to expect a Tim to put up with all of that, is it no?? :-)

Two camps really. The bitter camp – Who just spout nonsense and a few sensible punters.

Still nobody has mentioned without Celtic there would be no war memorial.

I have managed to find a link on the rather excellent London Hearts site which if anyone is ever looking for any match information for any Celtic v Hearts match I would recommend.

A sum of £750 was raised from the War Memorial match.

The Sammi debate is understandable as he is a fine human being and has been a good employee.

I think it is realistic to say that Celtic felt his time was up.

I don’t disagree with the decision and have no idea who made it.

Our playing style needed to improve and maybe he did not meet the criteria.

We have to use our limited resources better if we are to improve in Europe.

The reluctance of Neil to use our youth in the run in when league was won could not be justified and the club was stagnating.

We have a more modern coaching team in place and perhaps finally we will start to implement a system that will give youth a pathway to first team.

Sammi does not fit with this strategy and i hope his career prospers wherever he plays.

I think Celtic got this right.

Both Neil and Gordon had tremendous visions of the beautiful game.

Sammi is a Celtic Legend, even before what he is going to do in the future, I think we all know that Sammi will help as many people as possible with his wealth.

A new Chapter in Celtic is now about to happen, it may be amazing, it may well be bleak.

Paul. If we sell one player for 6m we can replace him for one player for 6m

If we buy a player at £1million we will pay them a £1m players wages. If we sell them for £6m and we buy a £6m player they will expect bigger wages than the £1m player. I would like to see the manager getting the funds from sales but I don’t run the club and have no idea how to.

When I saw the title I thought it was about Hearts, Hibs, Falkirk, Dunfermline etc, clubs like Celtic trying to live within what they earn competing against the Crazies at TRFC who simply fail to grasp the concept.

Why those clubs do not ask the SFA how TRFC manage to pass the financial licensing criteria I do not know.

Unless of course they already know the answer “Because it’s Rangers”

SuperSutton-Samaras said he was never offered anything by Celtic. He has proved he is not a greedy person by dropping £1 mil + on his Man City contract,he will know the going rate at CP,therefore he wouldn’t ask for silly money.I know who i believe HH

    —–

And in the scenario I presented he wasn’t offered anything by Celtic. Discussions were had with his agent, there was no agreement and no chance of there being an agreement.

Fine mate, what is the source of said conversations ?

    ———–

Maybe I wasn’t clear in that this was a scenario I made up. which in my my opinion is perfectly feasible and shows how it was possible that Sammy was not offered a new contract and therefore Sammy was telling the truth and that Celtic were also not necessarily casting him adrift. It’s just like any signing negotiations, sometimes terms can’t be agreed upon and there is no deal done.

It hasn’t ended sweetly for me.

Whilst they are allowed to keep their 52 titles ,everything else is just a short term hitch for them.

They should have been stripped of the titles that they cheated to win.

All of football should be informing them that they are a new club with 2 lower league titles to their name.

The SFA,SPFL,EUFA are all allowing them the kudos of claiming the old clubs titles.

    It is bitter.

  25. While I fully agree we should not jump on the mad bandwagon and pay £6-8M for such as Snodgrass. I would question why we never picked him up when he was at Livingston as a youth player.

I clearly recall picking him out at 13s as a player of great promise, so I am sure more than a few Celtic scouting reports would have also indicated the same over a period of years.

As regards Samaras, we have seen it all before he is working ever harder to get a contract then will simply revert back to his more standard performances with maybe 5-6 quality displays over the course of a season. I wouldn’t even think of offering whatever his agent is asking + signing on fee’s etc. Time to move onwards & upwards

If, the Celtic support were united under the one banner – which their not – and made a statement of something along the lines of – “There will be ‘NO’ SB’s purchased until, the SMSM are banned indefinitley.” – how long do you think it would take for the club, ‘bored’, fans, management, players etc to be on the same page?

An excellent point. I suspect that is one of the reasons John Collins has been brought into the coaching team.

John has been involved with the grass roots side of football with Livingston and Scotland and I believe will have excellent contacts in these areas. The trick is to get these boys before they head south. Once they go to any of the top two leagues in England they are probably out of our price range transfer fee wise and wage wise.
