Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

  1. Looking for advice from our Belfast Bhoys .

I will be staying in the Fitzwilliam hotel in the city centre.

I am presuming that it will be easy to get a taxi to the match from near the Rock bar, in the Falls Road, before the match.

My concern is how to get safely back to my Hotel or The Rock , after the match.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I would have liked to have gone to the Cliftonville game on Wednesday.

Aside from the football – I hear the Belfast version of the Rio Carnival is on around this time of the year.

  5. I see Norwich have set a deadline of 5pm, should have been high noon. Who will blink first Pistol Pete or Deadly Delia ? We will know then if its accepted then Hooper has pushed it through, if its not then Hooper will probably want to stay till January. Good luck to him if he goes and we get £5m, pity from a marketing department viewpoint, name like Hooper and being top goal scorer, the marketing manager will be shedding tears.

If Celtic fans are drinking on the Falls Rd, get a taxi to drop you off over to Cliftonville Rd area. Should cost no more than 8/10 quid.

“I see Norwich have set a deadline of 5pm,”

    So,what does that mean exactly?

  8. kikinthenakas “Looking forward to tonight, few drinks and cocktails overlooking the sea then a nice dinner,” i was worried you were heading out on a date when i read that…

I agree in terms of Austin, he will be alot cheaper now and his club keen to do business, Aidan not sure of, himself and lenny spark off each other, what about this guy from Monaco who is surplus to requirements?

  9. Steinreignedsupreme, that if we don’t accept their offer they will drop interest like Hull did, might force Hooper to put his foot down….

paolosboots. I wish I was as sure of winning Wednesdays match as I am about Gary Hooper leaving.Even if it is not this week as we get towards the end of this transfer window an EPL club will be desperate to sign him a proven goal scorer what we are seeing at the moment is a couple of clubs trying to sign him on the cheap and that wont happen Celtic have a price in mind and we wont sell until our price is achieved.H.H.

  12. A 5pm deadline set by Norwich?

Tell Delia to go eat cake.

The Hooper situation is way past boring, if he’s going then get shot and move on, as decent as he is, he’s no Neymar.

The idea of any club ‘setting a deadline’ on any of our players is quite funny.

Anyone would think Norwich and Hull are using the media to try and tap Hooper up or the media are simply making stuff up.

Celtic turn down Hull’s offer and the media report this development as ‘Hull dropping their interest’…

  14. JoeFilippisHaircut, yes agree with you, but its all down to Hooper nobody wants an unhappy player. If he wants to go for the money or chance to get to the WC then he will go. Although if we held onto him for all the qualifiers it would make sense or to january where some relegation fodder will pay silly money for his goals.

What amazes me is the media are engaging in constant speculation about Hooper and people are suggesting Hooper does something about it.

  17. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

As I said yesterday Re Hooper, goalscorers are a rare commodity.

    We’ve got one,other clubs don’t.

Those clubs know we are willing to sell. They also know the deal we will accept.

A 5pm deadline is not a good negotiating tactic.

    Delia,bless her,is no poker player.

I still reckon we are holding out for £7m,but that is purely conjecture.

The 4 or 5m being thrown at us is an insult to Hooper, and to Celtic.

  18. Scunthorpe United would benefit financially from any big-money move for their former player, after agreeing a sell-on clause in the deal that took him from Glanford Park to Scotland three years ago.

Me too. We’d be getting a better player back imo. Put a spark in the team.

  24. Stein

The continued speculation in the media is not something we can change, that unfortunately is there way. IF he has decided to go then IMO it’s best for both parties it’s done sooner rather than later, hull or Norwich? I’m not sure playing for either will enhance his chances of going to the World Cup.

    Re Hooper

A crowd of us were over for the Barca game, stayed in the same hotel as his parents, who were very nice, but his agent and manager were there….a’holes both of them….they were a wee bit merry and seemed to think Hoops was some sort of Messi….really…..told us they were trying to get him a deal to go to the EPL and had interest from Turkey and Germany….blah…blah…blah….we said why would he leave when he can play in venues like this year in year out….he’s too good for us and money, was the answer….well he can o anytime, was the polite version…..clear these guys have been punting him for sometime…

He has scored some great goals for us but I always felt he could do more in games, good luck to him but wherever he goes he won’t be playing in CL games…..

I can’t get off this bloody site. My wife thinks Im having an affair as im on it so often. I don’t even post much. It is just good to read others agonising lik I am. One other thing; that season ticket offer was too good to resist – Celtic have added a 10 year old boy and a 15 year old girl to their season ticket ranks. If I can give up the bevvy they might get one bext year too…
