Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

The hunter gatherers of Ayrshire use a system of posts and pits to guide them through the ‘marching season’

Once the marching season is over they patiently await the next sign from the sky, bidding them to take their annual bath.

Summa – Sammi’s hair exists in its own temporal dimension; it will not respond to any ole deadline.

We should have given Hooper a deadline when the new contract was offerred.Sign it or transfer list, this sideshow is dragging on and on.If we dont accept an offer from a club which Hooper fancies, dont rule out him staying next season and leaving for nothing.

  14. Bada Bing, i’d rather see him sold for £4/5m whatever and spend £2/3m on Austin & Ibrahima Toure from Monaco on loan and hope that after a year in the hoops he’s desperate to sign for us (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibrahima_Tour%C3%A9) great stats.

Then we have utilized the cash the way hooper is playing imo he hasn’t looked interested imo.

Is Billy Sharp not the type of player who eventually winds up at Motherwell or Hearts and hit’s 20 goals for them?

If he joins us he’ll struggle especially in Europe where he would be massively out of his depth.

I’d still go for Nikolic of Videoton.

  18. Doyle and Sharp dont tie in with our transfer policy, because of their age. I’d be surprised if they were genuine targets. There are much better players in Spain , at lesser cost, if we want to look at older players.

Austin would be a risk, and getting value is seriously jeapordised where questions of fittness arise.

The rumours look like either a deflection tactic from the club, or the MSM going fishing , but without any bait

On another note, is Stokes eligible for he CL. I thoought his contract was up

  19. Billy Sharp?!

10 goals in 39 matches while on loan at Nottm Forest last season.

Obviously just the man we need to bang in the goals next season.

I was one of many who moaned on here last Friday night at the poor pre season performances and results.

I cannot however understand the amount of posters expressing concern and worry about the Cliftonville game.

In European terms we will not have an easier tie and I’m sorry if that sounds disrespectful to the Irish club. So if we approach it with trepidation, what will we be like against say Maribor then an Arsenal?

  21. Kojo @14:59,

“Ah wish Ah hid thought of that …”

So do I, you’d have made it gelastic

You’re not wrong about the strikers though.

To be honest,I don’t know the answer to our problems up front, but I would be astonished if it was Billy Sharp.

Granted,he has a record of a goal every 200 minutes,or 17 goals a season in the league, and may well improve on that in Scotland.

But we require a striker who can be trusted at a higher level. He has never been offered that chance, but little about him jumps out and says sign him.

    IMO

  23. Look we are Noo Interested ..at this time ..If Bringing In A Long or even Short Time

  27. Afternoon,

just popping on to see if anyone still needs a Hotel in Belfast for Wednesday night? Have a couple of twin rooms held at 4 star city centre £70 bb if anyone wants them (was for friends who have had to cancel last minute). They can be cancelled free of charge but just offering out as at a decent rate. Will only be on for 1/2 half or so and then out for the evening. Will check when I can.
