Confidence, abrupt changes and the keeper position

205

Joe Hart is already away and, according to an interview he gave to Swiss media, Benjamin Siegrist is leaving too, despite two years remaining on his contract.  Reducing the goalkeeper count from three to just Scott Bain can be interpreted that Celtic are confident with their options at this time.

Whereas fringe outfielders often get a chance to play in the era of five substitutes and the need to rest players, backup keepers can go years without seeing competitive action.  Then when they are thrust into it, as with Scott Bain in May 2023, the rustiness is often on display.  It is a career where the overwhelming compensation is the wage, not professional development.

Joe was one of a few transformational signings we made in the summer of 2021.  The first-choice keeper target feels like the biggest transfer decision of the summer.  Great, if we get it right, but whoever comes in to replace Benjamin could be equally important.

When Gordon Strachan started as manager in June 2005, David Marshall was first choice goalkeeper and expected to retain that position, with new signing Artur Boruc as backup.  That scenario soon changed as Gordon realised what a gem he had in Artur.  The following seasons saw Celtic reach the knockout stage of the Champions League twice, with Artur becoming one of the highest rated keepers in Europe.

    This was news to me.

Celtic Mac on previous thread – cheers.

The prognosis for the Scottish print media genuinely interested me a few years back.

    These days it barely registers.

Thinking back, I might have predicted the formal demise of one of the most prominent titles by 2023 or 2024.

    Got that one wrong clearly.

Instead of a Pompeii, they’re all experiencing a Rome.

    Slow lingering demises all round.

The online content revenue of each might be interesting …

… but even if the brands survive that transition, the hacks won’t.

Good to see you post and evade the myriad of adverts

AT, to be fair I just don’t get any ads at all. Still using Chrome on my lap top (though had to move to DuckDuckGo on my tablet and ‘phone), Javascript turned off, Ad Blocker downloaded (for free) and hey presto no ads for me! It’s the way to go.

Anyway, hope things are good with you and your retired mate the lawyer.

Hoping we really push the boat out for a top rate keeper. Will earn you as many points in a season as a good striker and at a far lower £ per pt.

Somebody who is comfortable outside the box. If we are going to be playing with a high defensive line you can’t have too big gaps.

Surely we must have a decent keeper in the academy who could step in if needed? Having three senior keepers (two of whom will hardly ever be used) doesn’t seem like the best use of resources.

Good afternoon all from Tennents Bar, Byres Road. I shall be inspecting my West End estate also known as the Botanic Gardens later. From there, a visit to the Aragon, Three Judges and Dolphin. The Rosevale shall be avoided. I hope you all have a grand day.

  5. Went to see Richard Hawley in Portsmouth last night , an absolute joy .Brilliant concert from first chord to last .

    You just Swatch…

    Imhoof lot 😜

  7. Well Artur was initially brought in on loan. Not sure if David Marshall had been Martin’s first choice goalkeeper the previous season, but with both Hedman and Douglas gone, he might have had some claim to the jersey. Not for long though, in goal for the 5-0 debacle against Artmedia in July 2005, and three days later in our first SPL game 4-4 away to Motherwell, that’s nine in my book. Boruc was in goal at home the following Tuesday when Gordon Strachan’s Celtic nearly overturned the deficit against Artmedia winning 4-0. No way back after that but there was a route down to Norwich.

Brentford currently got 3 x International keepers on their books – Flekken (Netherlands), Strakosha (Albania) and Valdimarsson (Iceland).

You would think that one of them might be available as a permanent or loan signing – Strakosha in particular.

  11. 3rd choice keeper should always be from the youth set up.

Sign a first choice to replace Hart, Bain is backup with 3rd from youths, who we all know will never get any game time.

Signing a 3rd keeper is a waste of a wage and a career.
