Confidence, abrupt changes and the keeper position

205

Joe Hart is already away and, according to an interview he gave to Swiss media, Benjamin Siegrist is leaving too, despite two years remaining on his contract.  Reducing the goalkeeper count from three to just Scott Bain can be interpreted that Celtic are confident with their options at this time.

Whereas fringe outfielders often get a chance to play in the era of five substitutes and the need to rest players, backup keepers can go years without seeing competitive action.  Then when they are thrust into it, as with Scott Bain in May 2023, the rustiness is often on display.  It is a career where the overwhelming compensation is the wage, not professional development.

Joe was one of a few transformational signings we made in the summer of 2021.  The first-choice keeper target feels like the biggest transfer decision of the summer.  Great, if we get it right, but whoever comes in to replace Benjamin could be equally important.

When Gordon Strachan started as manager in June 2005, David Marshall was first choice goalkeeper and expected to retain that position, with new signing Artur Boruc as backup.  That scenario soon changed as Gordon realised what a gem he had in Artur.  The following seasons saw Celtic reach the knockout stage of the Champions League twice, with Artur becoming one of the highest rated keepers in Europe.

The speculation game is in full swing

I like to divide them into no chance or Mibee

A definite no chance is the speculation regarding Daniel Peretz from Bayern Munich

    He is from Israel

I think we have burned our bridges in that market

  2. Final instalment on Camino, long post so scroll by warning ⚠️

Preparation – most I walked in any onr day on the Camino was 22 miles, mainly due to taking some detours to check out a monastery or church or a particularly scenic spot. As i stay in EK I would walk one of the longer routes at Whitelee Windfarm every 2 weeks or so along with longer walks of up to 15 miles in between. I also did the everyday 4 or 5 miles street walking around the local area too. Where possible, for the longer walks, I walked in the clothes I intended to use on the Camino.

Rucksack – carried daily on the Camjno with water flask (along with an electrolyte tablet each time it was topped up), plasters, foot tape, painkillers, waterproof jacket, hat, passport, wallet. Everything else was in my case that was transferred from hotel to hotel each day by a baggage transfer company. I used JacoTrans and had no issues.

Hotel or Albergue – An Albergue can vary in size and style. Best way to think is that they are like Youth Hostels where you can be cheek to jowl in dormitory style though some do private rooms. We stayed in hotels throughout. There was a big variance in terms of room type, amenities and food. We pre-planned our trip and booked all accomodation in advance. This worked out well though speaking to some folks who did same they felt on certain days they could have carried on and did more but we felt the days we did less allowed us to start later or catch up with washing or have a blowout 🍺

Clothes – took 3 sets of walking clothes, so 3 x each of t-shirts, socks, shorts, boxers and 2 x light long sleeved tops which came in useful at start of day when the sun was not quite up. For night time I did take other clothes but most folk change into their clothes for the next day. The Camino has no fashion police, whatever suits you best is good enough.

Shoes – used Merrell Men’s Accentor Sport 3 Vent Walking Shoe. Did a bit of research given when I would be walking and in what conditions and these did the trick. No issues with blisters, hard skin or anything like that

Foot Cream – Daily routine of applying Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Nourishing Foot Cream Dry/Damaged Feet before starting. Did not feel need to apply again at end of day. Was warned off the likes of Vaseline as this tends to act as a barrier to your skin breathing but have spoken to some who did use it and they had no issues

Boxers – Danish Endurance Mens Sports Boxer Shorts. Wore each day when walking and had no issues with, well you know what 😀

Socks – Norfolk Sheldon Merino wool, lightweight walking socks

Walking Poles – 2 out of our group of 4 bought these but only from day 3 onwards. They felt they made a massive difference and helped with various aches and pains, especially when on the way down from a steep climb. They are relatively cheap, about 20€, and widely available as you would expect. Most folk ditch theirs when they get to Santiago de Compostela due to not being able to get them through security if you do not have hold luggage.

Daily routine when walking – we usually started about 8.30 after breakfast and walked until lunchtime, about 12. As we got further into the Camino, we started to have a coffee break and then a later lunch just before we reached our destination. There are usually plenty of places to stop off but sometimes you can be caught out and end up walking an hour or so more than you planned, so always best to make sure water is topped up and you have a snack to keep you going.

Again, hope this helps anyone thinking about doing the Camino or similar long walks. Shout if you want to ask anything.

    Apologies if….

    This has been discussed already….

Or, if I am just imagining this….

    But;

    Souness.

On top of his ‘not remembering’ CalMac’s name….did he not also ‘forget’ Alastair Johnston’s name while discussing the sevco red card at Celtic Park?

If so, he should not be getting any more gigs on tv or radio.

    Because:

he has Dementia and needs help.

Or this is his wee way of deliberately disrespecting players of a certain club.

Anyway, if I just imagined the AJ one, he is still guilty of the CalMac one….

    Cheers,

    Weeron.

Here’s hoping the Scots defence doesn’t have more holes in it than a swiss cheese.

  9. Heads up for those that flagged up the BBC Rory Gallagher doc. Fantastic

Long time fan. Never saw Taste, though bought their albums later, and only now know why the band folded, at the IOW Festival of all places, after playing a blistering set. Did pretty well after that to be fair….

That was a great line-up, a real powerhouse trio.
