Confidence, abrupt changes and the keeper position

205

Joe Hart is already away and, according to an interview he gave to Swiss media, Benjamin Siegrist is leaving too, despite two years remaining on his contract.  Reducing the goalkeeper count from three to just Scott Bain can be interpreted that Celtic are confident with their options at this time.

Whereas fringe outfielders often get a chance to play in the era of five substitutes and the need to rest players, backup keepers can go years without seeing competitive action.  Then when they are thrust into it, as with Scott Bain in May 2023, the rustiness is often on display.  It is a career where the overwhelming compensation is the wage, not professional development.

Joe was one of a few transformational signings we made in the summer of 2021.  The first-choice keeper target feels like the biggest transfer decision of the summer.  Great, if we get it right, but whoever comes in to replace Benjamin could be equally important.

When Gordon Strachan started as manager in June 2005, David Marshall was first choice goalkeeper and expected to retain that position, with new signing Artur Boruc as backup.  That scenario soon changed as Gordon realised what a gem he had in Artur.  The following seasons saw Celtic reach the knockout stage of the Champions League twice, with Artur becoming one of the highest rated keepers in Europe.

  1. Great to see Joe Hart in the Berlin BBC studio for our game tonight. Joe will always bring a positive vibe re us, and proved a top analyist. Quite impressed with Rachel Corsie too, and of course Davie Moyes knows his stuff.

Gabby Logan always enthusiastic. Good alternative to the usual MOTD suspects.

  2. Like wee bitchy women ,some on here, slagging Gilmore. No idea why.Never started a game for the scum, and left at the first opportunity, getting them bare minimum cash.” His Mammy hates Green” Fekin grow up.

  8. Just back to my hotel after the game.

Really brave performance by Scotland players against a really solid very experienced team at this level.

So nearly snatched it in 2nd half. Massive credit to players like Ralston Gilmour Hanley Cal McGinn and Adam’s who didn’t start the game well but really grew into it and did not hide.

I really hope this result will galvanise them an enable them to push for a decent final group outcome on Sunday.

4 points is 99% certain to get through. 3 about 66% based on current situations. These could change in next 3 days. It may just be possible

(Approx 25%) that 2 points could be enough but our GD might reduce that to 15%.

Weirdly 3rd place is maybe better than 2nd. 2nd would mean Berlin v prob Italy on Saturday. 3rd could be Slovakia or Romania or Turkey or Portugal.

Interesting to hear re BBC vs BBC Scotland. I have McCann Thomson Crichton Jane Lewis McMullen and English staying in my hotel. I will be interested to see their written or hear spoken word and will ask the question how can an English coverage of a Scotland game be so much more positive than a Scottish broadcast output.

I also thought tonight’s Flower of Scotland was without doubt the best I have ever heard in a stadium anywhere. The noise level in the ground was insane.

The Germans are incredible hosts. Really great country to visit. Hopefully Scotland can stay longer.

  9. It was also a first tonight to walk past a riot police van leaving the football to hear their in car music system blaring out ‘no Scotland no party song’ ..all the police in great spirits despite the wreckage of the state of many Scotland fans trudging back to town.

  15. Tony got it tight last night in the pub I was in – had to turn a tell a table of young guns to shut it and support the whole team at one point – fannies…..

Tony is limited we all know that but he is 100% giving you everything he has. Not his fault the guys in front of him are injured nor that he is our only genuine RB. He goes and gives his best for his country – what he meant to do, tell the coach I’m no that great better not pick me – he is a committed and brave young man but gets abused by his own fans – sickening

  16. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

“When Callum McGregor eventually laid a heavy pass to the Manchester United midfielder…….”

  17. Tony played a loose pass for sure but the finish – ffs that’s a 1 in 50…….

The bbc comms were shocking – the whole game “ the Ralston error”……. At one point the messiah played a short pass to Tony deep in his right back area with two Swiss nearby- the pass was 2/3 yards behind Tony and McCann says “”Ralston caught on his heels”……..I mean whit………

  18. Look at the end of the day Ralston made a bad pass that led to the Swiss equaliser, it happens as for commentary team they did go on a bit ,a point is better than none, and to me there hasn’t been a standout Scottish player so far.

  19. If you look at Scotland’s goal you will see an early contribution from Gilmour but key contributions from Tierney and McGregor. The Swiss goal, which involved a well worked build-up out of defence, passes from their wide left to wide right and back again to wide left with their wing back (13) pushing into the Scotland half where Gilmour (who had been following the ball out to the right) got nowhere near closing him down, allowing the ball to be played forward, after which Hanley plays a poor lifted pass back to Gilmour…..

It is called putting the defence on the back foot, Tony’s pass back, Hanley and Hendry unaware of the danger from Shakiri, and a brilliant finish from the wee barrel. Davie Moyes analysed it well, but the BBC Scotland narrative, plus McFadden focus solely on Ralston. Souness tried to pin a well worked German goal on “the Celtic Captain”. We can all be critical, and most of us were after the Germany game, but there is something pernicious about the BBC Scotland contingent coverage, which is why many of us found the BBC Berlin based analysis of Logan, Moyes, Corsie and Joe Hart by far the better option. I hope that team will be in situ for the key game against Hungary Sunday night.

  20. Surely by now it can be taken as read that BBC Scotland will always but always take every opportunity to criticise anything with even a tinge of Celtic. They detest us with a vengeance.

  21. Hard fought draw which was a fair result. We are limited but make up for it with organisation and sweat.

Tony could do with more options when he receives the ball , mcCann’s advice to bit Tone to open up his body to receive the ball is fine if there is forward or square pass on.

Gilmour got pass marks but he needs to step up to give his wing back an infield pass option , otherwise the ball can only go back and then blottered.

Hungary looked effective down their left side , their left back looked a strong running lad with good skill. We need a cunning plan to keep him pinned back. It will be another hard game at the weekend bug got a sense the Hungarian defence is a big shakier than the Swiss.

  22. Tim Malone Will Tell on

To be fair, I think the conclusion most people would reach is that Scotland look a bit more balanced in midfield with both McGregor and Gilmour in the side?

Even then, we never look like controlling a game – but their combined abilities makes better use of our scrappy possession.
