Confidence, abrupt changes and the keeper position

205

Joe Hart is already away and, according to an interview he gave to Swiss media, Benjamin Siegrist is leaving too, despite two years remaining on his contract.  Reducing the goalkeeper count from three to just Scott Bain can be interpreted that Celtic are confident with their options at this time.

Whereas fringe outfielders often get a chance to play in the era of five substitutes and the need to rest players, backup keepers can go years without seeing competitive action.  Then when they are thrust into it, as with Scott Bain in May 2023, the rustiness is often on display.  It is a career where the overwhelming compensation is the wage, not professional development.

Joe was one of a few transformational signings we made in the summer of 2021.  The first-choice keeper target feels like the biggest transfer decision of the summer.  Great, if we get it right, but whoever comes in to replace Benjamin could be equally important.

When Gordon Strachan started as manager in June 2005, David Marshall was first choice goalkeeper and expected to retain that position, with new signing Artur Boruc as backup.  That scenario soon changed as Gordon realised what a gem he had in Artur.  The following seasons saw Celtic reach the knockout stage of the Champions League twice, with Artur becoming one of the highest rated keepers in Europe.

  3. Clunks asked a good question last night.

‘Where is Tony Ralston’s out ball?’

Not at the goal so much as throughout the whole match.

At Celtic every right back always has and had a player to find wide right, to pass to, and on occasion to go past.

That did not seem to be an option for Tony last night, nor did he appear to get much support when facing good wide play from the Swiss in the second hsalf. Did quite well in the circumstance.

Anyways we achieved the best result I thought we could have, (albeit we could have won, could have lost) but the fact is that barring an unlikely set of results, the Swiss will finish second, and indeed they have probably qualified already.

  4. 1983: Celtic sign Brian McClair from Motherwell for £70,000

BRIAN McCLAIR was described by Sir Alex Ferguson as his best ever buy for Manchester United. And it certainly the case that Fergie’s gain was very much Celtic’s loss.

McClair was excellent in the Hoops for four years from 1983-1987. In that time he scored an incredible 99 goals in 149 games in the Hoops and was badly missed when he was foolishly allowed to leave to join Manchester United.

Bosman ruling did not come into effect until later.

Bargain for Fergie, but we paid less for Frank McAvennie around the same time

  6. Frankly, pissed off at all the anti Keiran stuff in the media. Injury prone and all that, ffs

The guy is a sensational footballer who’s luck has deserted him, it’s a crying shame, he needs OUR support.

Tony’s our ball was sitting on the bench. Jamesie !

Clark basically played for a draw in order to take his chances with leaving a one off game v Hungary to win for qualification.

Obviously he would have taken the win, but his main aim seemed to be to make sure he hit a point against a better team.

This lets him go all in against Hungary, the weakest of the three opponents.

Watched Hungary v Ireland and the feeling I got was that Scotland might be able to get a result against them.

Im more pissed off with the negative comments about Anthony Ralston. A good honest footballer who plays for Celtic

I thought 1987 was too early for Bosman.

Both clubs couldn’t agree a fee (we wanted £2m and they offered a paltry £400,000) so a tribunal decided.

    Typical of our Board.

Given that Fergie knew who he was buying.

Wasn’t it Henrik that broke, (or equalled) Brian’s League record?
