Confidence and belief, only delivery to come

278

There will be little Ronny Deila doesn’t know about Molde. His confidence ahead of tonight’s game will be based on a genuine belief that Celtic are the better team, that the game plan is right for the occasion, and that his players are ready.

As a group, they need to perform to the mark they are capable of. Most importantly, they need to harvest the regret for the points and progress they’ve let slip away already during this season’s European campaign. A win, a good defensive performance, and if possible, a clean sheet, will go a long way towards setting up the second half of the season.

My expectation is that we’ll get it right.

Best wishes to Johan Cruyff, who let it be known today he is fighting lung cancer. He deserves to be mentioned alongside Pele and Maradona as one of the greatest players to have graced a football field. I spoke to Tommy Gemmell last year about the greats he’d played against. Eusebio was a phenomenon but Tommy was clear: he had nothing on Cruyff.

It’s 24 years since Johan stopped smoking but although quitting quickly brings mortality benefits, the experts tells us it takes 40 years of abstention before the likelihood of catching cancer reaches the same levels of non-smokers – a clear call to action, if you’re in need of one.

  1. I’m underwhelmed by the Cole signing.

Even in his pomp he didn’t score a lot of goals.

He is also a player that in recent times was regularly injured.

Good luck to him anyway .

Welcome to the famous Glasgow Celtic .

Thanks CC.Canyou see a sectarian slur with these T-Shirts?.That was the complaint.I cant.

  3. Philbhoy,

    Interesting.

I’m into efe playing the Bitton role if he fails to make it. I’d be worried about introducing it tonight though.

Can’t see either playing in the three though.

I think it’ll be kc, Armstrong and Joe Hanson tonight if wee James doesn’t make it.

The reason was there was no outcry that Scotland, England and Wales were not on the T-shirt was because below the map they printed- Ireland.

That was my point. The T-Shirt showed Ireland, where the fight is to be held. Why would it show a part of Britain. As the protesters call it.

  5. Citeh Fans – mental?

    What’s with them booing Zadok?

Just because their CL record is as piss-poor as the Huns?

Best of luck to Cruyff, what a player he was. That turn. Modernised the midfield role into one of guile and dynamism. Fulcrum of the total-football revolution.

Molde’s fun run runs out tonight. (dado-run-run…)

Great couple of results will buoy them up but they’re not going to be taken lightly by the Hoops. Given our players had their abortive performance in Malmo (who, by the way SMSM-led tims, are NOT the keech they were portrayed to be – decent 3 attempts in CL so far) I expect utter commitment and professionalism from the Bhoys and a 2 or 3 nil win. Bottom line – stop f#ckn aboot and paste them.

Looking forward to big Carlton Cole showing what he has left, and at the very least crunching a few of those SPL hammer-throwers who think they can get away with whacking Hoops with impunity; Big lad raised in the higher-level, no-quarter given physicality of the top English league will probably make the Sunday-League quality cluggers greet.

Delirious bet of the day – Boyata to score both halves 500/1. Fiver says I’m in Gran Canaria next week. Surrounded by gullibile, nubile young aristocrat German chikas on the veranda of the Riu five-star during cocktail hour as I write my postcard home to the missus…

  6. How on earth can we have confidence and belief in getting a positive result in Norway tonight?

The only comparison between the teams is their performances against Fenerbahce and Ajax.

Molde defeated the Turks away – we drew with them at home.

Where is there evidence in there that says we can beat them?

It can only be blind faith!

  7. bournesouprecipe

It’s a good mix of experienced Euro Warriors and some of the newer guys if Armstrong plays like he can we could do well down that side tonight:)

  8. “Molde defeated the Turks away – we drew with them at home.”

    Mr Pastry,

By using your same playground logic, we drew away to Ajax. Molde drew with them in Norway.

So it’s gonna be a narrow win to us by that reasoning

  9. Blind Faith were an English blues rock band, composed of Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. The band, which was one of the first “super-groups”, released their only album, Blind Faith, in August 1969. They were stylistically similar to the bands in which Winwood, Baker, and Clapton had most recently participated, Traffic and Cream. They helped to pioneer the genre of blues/rock fusion.

  10. Having watched Calrton Cole’s Celtic TV interview.

I like the cut of Big Carlton’s jib.

He comes across as a nice big humble guy.

Let’s hope that you get the “lots of goals ” that you are after.

    It is only blind faith.

Our away form in EL and CL stages does not through up many wins.

We are 7-1 at the bookies to win.

    Says it all really.

  12. I’m a worrier before any big game but tonight I feel relaxed and confident. I reckon that shortly I’ll get worried coz I’m not worried after that it will be only a matter of minutes before I actually get really worried. I’d still take the draw right now but have a feeling that we will win this one. That is until the worrying phase kicks in.

  13. “We are 7-1 at the bookies to win. Says it all really.”

    Tiny Tim,

    To win tonight’s game???

    Surely not?

    HH

  14. TinyTim, Where are you getting the 7 to 1 odds. I reckon the guy giving those odds could be bankrupt tomorrow. Paddy Power has Molde 7/4, Celtic 6/4.

*For all my sins I must confess that as a lhad I didnae like Johan Cruyff, George Best as well, the latter was 18 months older than me and the former 6.

It was probably envy as not only were they fabulous players while I couldnae kick my ain erse but both were talismanic with Bestie being good looking or so Mrs. TT kept telling me.

Also JC ripped us a new one in the 1971 EC, although I still maintain to this day if we had won in Milan in 1970 we would never have heard of Ajax or Bayern, we were that good.

Just before I left the country in 1975 there was a documentary on tele about Cruyff. He came from a single mother background as his father passed away when he was 12 and she started working with Ajax; Johan had been there since he was 10.

When asked about George Best he turned and pointed to his wife saying if it wisnae for Danny he could have ended up like George as due to the tremendous amount of temptation out there.

He came across as a genuine nice and decent guy. Incidentally his proper first name is Hendicks.

BTW, the Big Mhan reckoned that Johannes Neeskens was the main fulcrum behind that fabulous Dutch side.

Under Ronnie we have been able to score some goals away from home, so it will not surprise me if we got one or two this evening. Defend better than we did against, well a few teams, and we will come back with the points. It’s a simple ol’ game.

Welcome to big Carlton, hope he has couple of good seasons with us. Gives us a different option up front, and has made a positive decision to join us. I like that kind of attitude!

  17. Celtic Mac-game management,i.e,substitutions and tactics has cost us in Europe this season IMO.
