BRENDAN RODGERS will take Celtic to play a friendly match against Sligo Rovers next month.
The champions will take advantage of another international break to travel across the Irish Sea for the game at the Showgrounds on Wednesday October 9 with a 7.30pm kick-off.
The Hoops boss said: “When you’re working at a club like Celtic you are reminded every day of its history, so it’s great to be able to visit and play in Sligo, a place where the club has so many amazing links.
“The game takes place during the international window, so it’ll be a good work-out for the first-team players who aren’t involved with their countries that week.”
IRISH AYES…Brendan Rodgers is delighted Celtic will be playing in Sligo next month.
Rodgers, speaking on the club website, added: “We know there is a huge Celtic following in Ireland, nowhere more so than in the north west, so it will be a great chance for so many to see the players in action.
“For myself personally, it’s always great to go home, so this is a trip I am really looking forward to.
“For everyone else, of course, both sets of fans and both clubs, I know this will be a great occasion.”
One player who will be looking forward to the trip will be captain Callum McGregor after the influential midfielder announced his international retirement last month.
The Hoops’ onfield leader celebrated his 31st birthday playing for Scotland in their 5-1 loss to Germany in the opening Euro 24 tie in June.
McGregor also turned out in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland before the Scots crashed out of the competition following a 1-0 loss to Hungary.
He stepped down from national duty shortly afterwards which will allow Sligo fans to see him close-up in action next month.
