Conflict of interest Ogilvie

860

As newco chief executive, Derek Llambias reported to his AGM yesterday, he meets the SFA today to discuss further involvement of Newcastle United owner, Mike Ashley at his club.  Ashley is nearing the end of a power-struggle between his faction, which appears to include the Easdale brothers, and pretty-much everyone else who goes to Ibrox, as well as Dave King and other worthies noticeable by their absence when the assets of oldco were to be paid for.

One of this morning’s newspapers appears to suggest SFA board member Peter Lawwell may retire from this meeting on account of him apparently having a conflict of interest, however, I believe this would be extraordinarily unlikely.  Peter is no more or less incentive to see business being conducted appropriately than anyone else.

That’s not to say there’s not a conflict of interest.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, will also attend the meeting.  Ogilvie passed his Rangers shares to his wife when he became an executive director of Hearts.  SFA Articles of Association expressly forbids a person from having an influence with one club while “directly or indirectly” being a shareholder in another without the prior written consent of the SFA.

Mr Ogilvie may have attained prior written consent of the SFA on this subject before accepting the Hearts job, but if he did, I don’t see the need to transfer his shares to a family member.  This makes Ogilvie look like a tawdry ducker and diver, wholly inappropriate to lead the Association. If I was Llambias I’d challenge Ogilvie the first moment he opened his mouth.

As I said earlier in the week, don’t get too hung up on Ashley’s shareholding.  If it proves a stumbling block he could play The Offshore Game and quickly disinvest to an entity based in the British Virgin Islands (seems to be the hot location for these types), the control of which could never be traced to him.

Those hoping the SFA will inhibit Ashley’s land-grab of retail and other rights are also likely to be disappointed.  JJB and Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan established precedent that he was able to conclude extensive trading contract with other clubs while in charge of Wigan without compromising multi-ownership principles.  Ashley can own and exploit all commercial rights of newco.

The key point Ashley will be concerned about in SFA rules is article 13. (3), which forbids persons from having “any power whatsoever to influence the management or administration of another club”.

The rules permit the SFA to grant Ashley permission to increase his shareholding but the phrase “any power whatsoever” is patently clear.  Ashley cannot appoint board members or offer loan players.

The Dear Green Place

Yesterday’s uncertainty alarmed many in Glasgow but the reality of the news brought disaster to some.  May God help each of them.

There’s always a spring in the step when news of our pal Kano arrives.  That changed when I opened the email from Carolyn yesterday to hear Martin was in Intensive Care.  We know through his time on the blog that Kano brought vigour and resolve to his life years before his illness struck.  If anyone can overcome this, it’s him.

One home game, St Johnstone, will now need to be rescheduled for midweek.

That is a fair assessment. If Matthews or Lustig stay fit it would be a bonus. If they are both fit then I suspect one will go.

Maybe the manager will not fancy either and bring in his own RB and prove us both wrong! Hahahaha

Izzy ( and Griffiths) is always one of the players who applauds the remaining support at the end of a game. I think Craig Gordon should consider doing this. He is undoubtedly excellent but, so far, there is not that special connect with the fans. It would help generate a feeling of togetherness which is not obvious on match Days.

PS Obviously, Craig is not exceptional regarding this issue but I feel he is low in the affections of the crowd list.

  5. Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Striker fumes as Borg is top sporting Swede

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is upset at losing out to tennis ace Bjorn Borg as Sweden’s top sports person of all time.

Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter ranked the top 150 Swedes but placed Ibrahimovic behind the five-times Wimbledon winner.

Congratulated by the paper, the PSG striker responded: “Thank you, but to finish second is like finishing last.”

Asked for his top Swedes, he replied: “I would have been No 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, with due respect to the others.”

However, Ibrahimovic admitted that Borg, who also won six French Open titles, was a “cool person” and “a living legend”.

Borg dominated Wimbledon for five straight years between 1976 and 1980, before losing to John McEnroe in the 1981 final.

Clown of a man. Henke is the best footballer to come out of Sweden anyway.

The agreement had to, without a shadow of a doubt get agreement from the respective boards.

We had a director on the spl board, that’s it in a nutshell.

As for the hoards, they as far as I am aware not happy with the newco having to pay oldco’s debt, that is their beef, they conviently forget that without the other clubs approval they would’t be playing football.

It really don’t matter anyways, they have a licence, not that they were never going to get one.

It’s only about the bigot pound.

    Fair point fella.

The one time I recall it being done with us involved was when Craig Beattie was sold for £1 million!

But, given that Neil recently said that the figures being bandied around re: the recruitment of Balde, Pukki & Derk were nowhere near what the fans were led to believe(by the club) I assume coz, Neil said that he didny read the papers – then who knows what to believe anymore?

  11. I think Leigh Griffiths has a lot of potential. He strikes the ball so cleanly with his left foot, that he is a goal threat from anywhere near the box. I think RD sees that in him as well, but he didn’t fit the mold of the modern day professional footballer. I have been very impressed by the way Leigh has knuckled down and improved his fitness while on the fringes of the first team. He is becoming the player RD wants him to be and that can only be good for Celtic.

Leigh’s goal against Hearts last season was the highlight of the year for me. I remember at the time it was a really early rise here for the game. When he finished from the edge of the box and ran over to Lenny to celebrate, it made the early morning start worthwhile. One of those moments that only comes along now and again.

Hopefully both he and Guidetti will be here in January.

Potential buyers at other clubs (just like Celtic) and our supporters tend to be optomists, when it comes to injury and always think the latest, will be the last.

We see it constantly “if Lustig was fit” yada, yada. yada. I’m more synical admittedly, and have posted many times, I prefer fit and stripped in the Hoops. If your’e constantly not willing and able, I’d look for something else.

Lustig is a good defender and another club might gamble on that basis, but see the end of my last post.

I feel we badly need a tactical aware defender who can play behind a back 3 someone who can anticipate the play in front on him, cover from left, middle and right and not leave a fellow defender 1 on 1, the old fashioned sweeper .

Forget the 2 holding midfielders, lets get back back to basics.

    Yip, yer probably right fella.

Dunno about yer self but, I’d like to see a proactive style of ‘hands-on’ management along the lines of, paying player contracts up and striking a deak and moving the player on.

I mean, the playing of Izzy in the 1st team whilst he was million miles away from being at his best was both a, weakening of the product on the pitch and a drain on resources.

The priority should be to keep the team on the pitch as strong as it’s possible to be and, not to cheat the fans who – not just by Celtic – are treated as an afterthought these days.

Without going off on one – rebellion by the fans of ‘all’ clubs is needed to take the game away from the rich mans toy-box. imho

Yes I just read that earlier, here is an excellent excerpt from it “Following the economic crash in 2008, a rotten system was exposed. For a split second the banks were lined up as crooks with obligations to the public they had betrayed.

But within a few months – apart from a few stones lobbed over excessive corporate “bonuses” – the message changed. The mugshots of guilty bankers vanished from the tabloids and something called “austerity” became the burden of millions of ordinary people. Was there ever a sleight of hand as brazen?

Today, many of the premises of civilised life in Britain are being dismantled in order to pay back a fraudulent debt – the debt of crooks. The “austerity” cuts are said to be £83 billion. That’s almost exactly the amount of tax avoided by the same banks and by corporations like Amazon and Murdoch’s News UK. Moreover, the crooked banks are given an annual subsidy of £100bn in free insurance and guarantees – a figure that would fund the entire National Health Service.” – John Piler por cierto

I always liked John Pilger`s stuff and took a group of Media Studies pupils ( none of your `student` nonsense from me until FE !) to hear him speak in London. We discovered in the theatre that he couldn`t make it. Alec Thomson, however, proved a very able substitute.
