This is the last day to complete our survey into who we, the Celtic community, are, our thoughts, values and where we came from. It’s a short, anonymous, survey, with questions on the Living Wage, the Offensive Behaviour Act, Resolution 12 and other topics, including your view on last week’s referendum.
Thousands of people have already taken part so we will have an excellent insight into what the Celtic community looks like in 2014. If you’ve not already participated, you can let your voice be heard here.
A European academic has compiled the survey and we’ll publish findings shortly.
It’s refreshing to hear a manager be frank about a sporting forgone conclusion, as Ronny did yesterday, “we are definitely going to win the league”. More importantly, he added “The goal is the treble”.
For reasons which have never been evident, apart from Jock Stein’s first five seasons, and a gloriously sunny day in 1957, Celtic have underachieved on a massive scale in the League Cup, a trophy we haven’t won in the last five seasons.
It’s maybe been seen as too much of a poor-relation when the team have higher targets in mind, but it’s more accurate to say we have been an ill-prepared soft touch since Jock’s five-in-a-row came to an end. Superior performances in the Scottish Cup suggest there is more than the randomness of cup football at play in the League trophy.
I never understood the criticisms of Neil Lennon for his ‘failure’ to win the treble. We achieved this feat only three times in our history. Even when we won the league, the vast majority of times we failed to win both cups was as a result of defeat to someone other than Rangers, so their liquidation in 2012 should not affect the trend.
Ronny is three games away from his first trophy as a Celtic manager; he will be hot favourite for each of them. On paper, the Scottish Cup will present no more danger, but winning two cups takes a level of consistency that even the great [and consistent]Celtic teams struggled to achieve.
Before we consider the treble we need to find consistency in the league and Europa League, starting with wins and clean sheets against St Mirren and Dinamo Zagreb. If we can do this, this could yet be a memorable season.
Remember the survey closes tonight!

It will be a year come the 5th October since our friend, fellow blogger, Father and Partner of Linda left us.
St. John Doyle (George Ryan) loved the Celtic and CQN. He was an individual who stood up for what he believed in and did a lot (understatement) for Celtic Supporters as well as those he represented in the Community and Residents of Glasgow.
CQN rallied when the call was put out in the days after George’s untimely death. You all helped get the Family to the Ajax game, a lovely floral tribute and most importantly contribute financially to Sean’s Trust. It showed just what the CQN Family (Lurkers and Bloggers) are made of.
I have kept in touch with Linda and helped/supported Sean’s Trust when I could. However, I have to confess I could and should have done more. It has been a hard year for Linda and the Family. Not helped by some abuse she suffered through social media including comments about George from so called Friends and Celtic Supporters. I do not and will not give any more detail on this but will say every individual has the right to stand up for what they believe in without being berated.
I would urge each and every one of you to support the night at the People’s Palace if you can:

You will find Sean’s Trust on FB, Twitter and Linda is on my Friends list on FB.
Most of all let us remember St. John Doyle (George Ryan) the Bhoy who led a good life whilst amongst us, who stood up for what he believed in. A Mhan who stood up for the Celtic Family. Let us cherish his memory and the things he did for us. Let us not sully his memory and continue to support Sean’s Trust.
God Bless St. John Doyle…

Bizarre some people’s actions towards the dead and the grieving, a minority but shamefully amongst us.

SFTB – that’s why I don’t watch Strictly ;-)
Swimming is the worst mind you…
RD appears to be a slave to his system
This will cost him his job unless he is prepared to work more gradually to achieve his desired outcome
We just do not have the players to play 4-3-3 and press high up the park
At times on Wednesday we were strung out 2-2-6 with far too many players ahead of the ball
Better teams than Hearts would have had a field day against us
The problem we have is that the current set up means the two centre mids – Brown and Johansen – have too much ground to cover
This is compounded by playing wide players on their “wrong” side – all this does is slow the game up and brings them in field to even more congestion
The first goal came about because we had a naturally left footed player on the left crossing the ball quickly – this meant Hearts we forced to play facing their own goal and made a mistake. JG was also facing their goal which allowed him to see what was happening and take advantage
We now have two players capable of playing in our opponents penalty box but seem determined not to play to their strengths – to me that either stupidity or arrogance that we cannot afford
At this stage – and I genuinely hope that I am wrong- it seems to me that RD has the same failings as TB and TM. Both wanted to play in a way that we were incapable of sustaining over a prolonged period like a full season. This was because their systems were too elaborate and complex – especially for the way the game is played and more importantly refereed in Scotland. Add to that the fact that we are very light weight physically and not mentally tough enough means that we will continue to struggle. Some days when we get an early goal we will look impressive but on others if team survive the early onslaught we will become more vulnerable!
RD is spot on when he talks about wanting a more professional outlook from his players but he needs to be more professional in shaping the resources he has at his disposal
Win games now – get an extra body in midfield – even God forbid – think about playing 4-4-2 for a while since we have two guys capable of playing that way in JG and SS
Then once the league is safely won and you have had about a season to get the players fitter – then start to adapt towards your desired system!
Be pragmatic – at present RD looks a it like an amateur suddenly pitched up against poorer but more experienced pros!
I have no idea how professional the domestic game is in Norway but I think it will be full of earnest hard working types
I doubt if RD has come across opponents who are so keen to do well against his team that they are prepared to whatever it takes to stifle us
My older brother always reminds me that one of the first things that Mr Stein did when he returned in 1965 – was to make us fitter and stronger
No more the old “don’t retaliate” mantra of Bob Kelly – more the “if that’s what you want then that’s what you’ll get” idea.
Stein knew we had to be able to take care of ourselves as the refs were often not prepared to their jobs!
I don’t think Scottish football has changed much in that regard
MON lost heavily at Ibrox on his first visit and went out and signed NL and big Ramon Vega
Next time we defended for an hour and kicked the crap out of them if they came anywhere near our box.
Then we went on to score 3 in the last 30 minute and could have been five!
That’s what I mean about being physically and mentally strong enough to go to you biggest rivals and do that!
How many on here really see RD’s being capable of going to the home of the Zombies if we are unlucky enough to draw them in a cup tie and do the same?
Apologies for the rambling rant!

Lovely article in today’s Herald about John Divers:
############################### That is a terrific article and lovely tribute to a man who by all accounts was a gentleman. Read a few posts last week of some on here who were taught or new him, fine tributes also.
Rest in Peace John Divers jnr of Glasgow Celtic.

Thanks for putting on that post about John Divers in the Herald today.
Fantastic article about a truly great Celtic family.
The biggest thing that i took from it was how humble these 3 Celtic gentlemen came across. Thanks again.
The ole Celtic clean sheets
Jobo,
I’m guessing that, on a practical level, watching Mr Benn just wouldn’t be feasible for you nowadays.
Golf. Yawn.
Tried it once when I was about 14. Me and a mate helped ourselves to his da’s expensive clubs and balls and hacked our way painfully around the local council-run course over a period of about six hours. We probably ended up about 200 over par. Strangely enough I hit a solitary shot at a par 3 hole that Rory McIlroy would have been delighted with – missed a hole in one by inches.
I then managed to get whacked in the back of the neck by a tee shot from some guy who couldn’t be ersed waiting while we haplessly floundered a couple of hundred yards away. I actually heard the effing thing whistle through the air immediately before it nearly removed one of my cervical vertebra
After trudging home, knackered and demoralised, my mate’s da went off his rocker over the amount of balls we’d lost and sent us back to find them.
An effing nightmare from start to finish.

CQN advice needed. Going to New York in a couple of weeks for 5 days and looking for a decent hotel. I’m told Manhattan is the place to be rather than Times Square but as I’ve never been I will gladly accept any advice. Have looked online and have accepted, with some reluctance, that I’m going to pay a bloody fortune.
Same thing goes for restaurants and stuff to do.
many thanks and HH.

Just off the phone to Oldtim.
He is staying in town after the game on Thursday.

Thanks for posting the Herald article on John Divers.
I was extremely fortunate to be taught by him at St Pat’s in the mid 80s, and had the privilege of spending time with him for 3 years as he taught Economics.
We all knew his football background, stories told by dad’s and uncle’s, but as the article hints at, he never seemed comfortable talking about that part of his career despite having a classroom of boys desperate to hear any tale of what it was like to play for Celtic.
102 goals for the Hoops is quite an achievement , players are worshipped now for scoring half this amount before leaving for provincial English clubs.
He must have been a decent player , he was an excellent teacher , and he was a fantastic man.
God bless , RIP Mr Divers

Lennybhoy – thank you
I see that after encouraging us mugs, season ticket holders, to part with the cash for a 3 match European package wether you can make the 3 games or not Celtic are now offering games on an individual basis to the day trippers.
Cool.
Obvious that the sale of 3 match packages have not met expectations
Interesting chat re playing a holding midfielder
Not going to happen ….it’s not accommodated within the system
The system appears to be the paramount consideration

When I watch Celtic on TV I’m always resplendent in some sort of Celtic jersey.
When I watch golf on TV I’m always resplendent in some sort of Golf polo top.

Or can us season ticket holders turn up and get a free ticket as well
From official site

Choppy hoy,
Excellent summary of the situation.
I cannot decide if RD does not understand what is going on on the field, or whether he has a clear vision of what he wishes to achieve. I wonder how the players feel!
I see no place for Commons in his system since he is not a fast player and cannot chase down opposition players. I also do not see the improvement that he claims has happened.
I suspect we are headed for the rocks and that this will not be a season to remember fondly.
RD has good resources available to him but he has nowhere near having a team that has an effective shape.

Just had a quick read over the previous pages and had a thought on a subject being discussed on Page 1 & 2
Imagine, toiling all season to beat the cream of European football and win the right to play in the Champions league final……only to find out it’s being played at the Crumbledome! Oofftt, what a kick in the Haw Maw’s that would be!
mickbhoy1888
Spooky…we might have been thinking about Haw Maws at the same time!
Lovely tribute to John Divers in the ‘Herald’ today.
Actually saw him play a few times in the early 60s – somewhat distant memories, unfortunately.
Still one of only 28 players to have scored 100+ goals for Celtic.
HH!!

I stayed at The Pear Hotel last month – not cheap (none of them are) but they did include a decent continental breakfast and had a happy hour for free drinks (wine) and snacks between 5 – 6pm both of which are very unusual for a New York hotel.
Rooms are a decent size, clean and modern – and a great location for exploring Manhattan.

Memories of Johnny Divers
Being a former St Pats bhoy John was the ultimate hero growing up. My first recollection was a photo in one of the papers of a schoolbhoy John resplendent in the Tradamus Lampada uniform sitting at a desk drinking his wee bottle of milk………a lot of Raphael my older brother told me as John was a Monitor and widnae be sitting at a desk drinking milk.
When I think of the players that missed the boat on Jocks arrival, John and the “President” Jim Kennedy come tae mind…2 diehard Celts who deserved more in their career but who also are of a dying breed….they played for the hoops.
It has been mentioned on here that Jock’s initial results weren’t that great on his arrival and the cup win was what kept the fans happy….he was the original tinkerman….the start of the new season saw us lose 2 of our first 3 League Cup games…both to the Dundee sides…so when we set off on the Wednesday night for Tannadice for our opening League game (in those days the opening game was always midweek squeezed in between League Cup games) the mood wasn’t really optimistic……I had an acquaintance at that game in which John scored the first goal in the honest niar run who told me at the time that John Divers was magnificent that night.
We had a PE teacher whose mission was to stop the pupils wearing Celtic scarves….the school colours were green and gold tae……..if caught wearing a scarf he demanded it’s removal….in fact he often pulled it off lhad’s necks…….this same teacher’s parent’s had a newsagent in the town which also sold holy memorabilia including the papers that were usually bought at the back of chapel….somehow he had an issue with the Celtic.
In November 1961 Celtic supporters rampaged through Dundee…story at the time was a young Celtic supporter who had been arrested was found dead in the cells.
It made the front pages…the same PE teacher posted the front page in one of the schools message boards….headlines “Celtic Fans Riot in Dundee”…..much to the consternation of not just the pupils but the staff tae.
The other PE teacher, a big gregarious mhan opened the message board…replaced the offending article with a poster of John Divers complete with the title “School Hero”….it remained there until the school year ended 7 months later.
Thanks chaps.
JackDempseyCSC
the story about celtic giving a free second ticket to anyone buying one for the accies game next week
at the end of the story is one of the reasons why the club feel they have to do this and why there are enough unsold tickets to do it
its the bit that says the price is £26
scottish football is so grossly over priced for the product on offer that its scary
fans shouldnt be paying any more than 20 quid to get into any spfl game these days, and even that is stretching it
im all for good offers, 2 for 1 etc but to suggest that 26 quid was a fair price in the first place for that game is just idiocy
tomtheleedstim
Was just in NY a few months ago …. as TMWT says no place in Manhattan is cheap …. I’ve never stayed in the Pearl, but it has a good rep.
personally, I avoid Time Square … too noisy for me….
I stayed in the Roger Williams …. quite nice and well situated … also, the Standard is nice…. both good 4 star boutique hotels, and probably only about 2/3 of the price of the Pearl, I believe.
If you dont mind being off the beaten track a bit, Brooklyn is definitely the up and coming area at the moment…. even if you aren’t staying there, lots of cool places for an evening….
TT
I remember Gilroy and Big Jake. Have I missed anyone?
