Consistency needed before talk of trebles

796

This is the last day to complete our survey into who we, the Celtic community, are, our thoughts, values and where we came from.  It’s a short, anonymous, survey, with questions on the Living Wage, the Offensive Behaviour Act, Resolution 12 and other topics, including your view on last week’s referendum.

Thousands of people have already taken part so we will have an excellent insight into what the Celtic community looks like in 2014.  If you’ve not already participated, you can let your voice be heard here.

A European academic has compiled the survey and we’ll publish findings shortly.

It’s refreshing to hear a manager be frank about a sporting forgone conclusion, as Ronny did yesterday, “we are definitely going to win the league”.  More importantly, he added “The goal is the treble”.

For reasons which have never been evident, apart from Jock Stein’s first five seasons, and a gloriously sunny day in 1957, Celtic have underachieved on a massive scale in the League Cup, a trophy we haven’t won in the last five seasons.

It’s maybe been seen as too much of a poor-relation when the team have higher targets in mind, but it’s more accurate to say we have been an ill-prepared soft touch since Jock’s five-in-a-row came to an end.  Superior performances in the Scottish Cup suggest there is more than the randomness of cup football at play in the League trophy.

I never understood the criticisms of Neil Lennon for his ‘failure’ to win the treble.  We achieved this feat only three times in our history.  Even when we won the league, the vast majority of times we failed to win both cups was as a result of defeat to someone other than Rangers, so their liquidation in 2012 should not affect the trend.

Ronny is three games away from his first trophy as a Celtic manager; he will be hot favourite for each of them.  On paper, the Scottish Cup will present no more danger, but winning two cups takes a level of consistency that even the great [and consistent]Celtic teams struggled to achieve.

Before we consider the treble we need to find consistency in the league and Europa League, starting with wins and clean sheets against St Mirren and Dinamo Zagreb.  If we can do this, this could yet be a memorable season.

Remember the survey closes tonight!

I remember Gilroy and Big Jake. Have I missed anyone?

*Big Jake was the “other” PE teacher I mentioned……Jacky Gallagher was a great Celtic mhan tae…..Jaffa had a season at Celtic Park.

  2. I watched John Divers play in the early sixties.

His ability to come out of a ruck of tackles with the ball was amazing.

When I found out when talking to John Hughes at the Wimbledon CSC event in June, that John Divers had the problems with his legs as described in the Herald article, that ability moves up a peg from amazing to miraculous.

I have a distant me memory of him scoring a hat trick in a 4-3 Scottish Cup tie victory at Tynecastle when Celtic came from behind, but whilst I’m sure of the game I’m not sure of the facts but I do know John Divers played a significant part.

Going back to the conversation with Big Yogi what was very obvious was the love and affection the Bear had for John Divers that lasted 58 years and I know the Bear will be hurting along with John Divers family.

I’m glad I saw both of them play.

Anybody tell me what’s happening on weekend of 15th November w.r.t. Celtic – is it an international weekend?

Very enjoybale read about the late John Divers. He sounds like the type of guy, going by the comments of former pupils, you would enjoy having as a teacher.

Cracking stories of him as a player.

Bawsman, small world. I was down in St Annes between 1996 & 1997. Marvellous place.

Was the Paul you mentioned, Paul ‘podger’ McGrane & the Jim, Jim McGahon?

I worked in the same building as Paul. I got to know him in the early eighties as we had a few mutual acquaintances plus he and his brother, Sean, were members of the Lisbon Lions CSC, the supporters bus I used to go on. Paul’s a great laugh.

It was terrible Shug McWilliams passing away so young. I went to his funeral at St Michael’s. Shug was unique and the biggest Celtic fan I have ever met. Great guy.

We were playing midweek against Dunfermline and Shug travelled up and the game was postponed while he was en route.

When it was rearranged, he travelled up again and the game was called off late this time. The following day when he came back, no word of complaint from him other his disappointment at not getting to the hoops play.

At the time of Macari’s stint in the dug-out…we sold

top scorer Gerry Creaney for – £600k and gave LM

    £100k to replace him?!?

The fans were – to be honest – dragging their erses

re: organizing a bhoycott to get rid of the old ‘bored’

so, for me, LM’s signing of Wayne Biggins should

have been a red-rag to the fans to get their erses into

    gear and get bhoycotting. imho

  10. Auldheid @ 18:02…

Like you I saw John Divers play in the early sixties.

We pronounced the name Divers (as in Davie Wilson, Jurgen Klinsman etc) but Mr Murphy (one of my teachers at Holyrood) who read the teams out at Celtic Park, always pronouned the Di as in divot.

I was at that 4-3 Scottish Cup tie at Tynecastle to which you referred and John scored twice putting Celtic 1 up and then equalising to make 2-2. Willie Wallace played for Hearts that day.

Dear me, it was in February 1962!

A miracle happened that day too.

With the game tied at 3-3, Celtic were awarded a penalty at the Gorgie Road end with 4 minutes left.

Paddy (Crerand) stepped up and (father)Gordon Marshall saved it. However, the sharp eyed referee spotted the goalkeeper’s movement prior to the kick and awarded a re-take.

Paddy duly dispathed his second attempt and we were through to the quarter finals.

    The name of the referee?

    Mr R H Davidson (Airdrie)!

My earliest memories of watching the Celtic always fondly include John, with his languid style, wearing any number from 7 to 11 on his shorts (it was the way in those days) and hooped socks (a proper Celtic strip).

102 goals in 232 appearances makes him a proper Celtic hero.

I’m pretty sure that we played Hearts in a league game at Parkhead the following midweek and they played in a flash candy striped shirt. Looked really nice (?) We whupped them again…..I think.

Our paths only crossed briefly, he was where I work for a short time and then St Annes, when we both were there on detached duty but he worked in a different part of the site.

I occasionally bumped into him when any of our midweek games were on sky. We watched them in the Our Lady Star of the Sea church hall.

I don’t think Ross recovered from his wife’s passing away and he left the civil service around ten years ago, if not longer.

The hall had pictures of the pope and the queen as you went into the bar area. Something you would never see here.

Oops……….just checked Celtic Wiki. No surprise but my memory failed me.

We did indeed play Hearts again the following midweek and Johnny Divers put the Celts 1-0 up in 4 minutes but the game ended 2-2.

Also no mention in report of flash candy striped shirts. That’s probably a figment as well!!!

Blantyre, I can’t remember meeting a Frank during my year in St Annes but the site was so large, it was difficult to get to meet some colleagues there.

Did he have black hair, as Ross came into the church hall the night we beat the defunct club 2 nil in the cup, with a chap I didn’t recognise.

Ross was well chuffed as he had a tenner on Celtic to win 2 nil with Di Canio to score at 15/1.

Its good to keep in touch with old colleagues. Hopefully they don’t give you a hard time for being on the ‘other side’ now. Lol
