Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

  1. Glad they died article reminds me why

    1965 league cup final

As Celtic celebrated by parading the cup around Hampden after the game, defeat was too much for some Rangers fans to take. They poured onto the field and assaulted some of the Celtic players, although a few of them were shocked to discover that Stein’s Celts would hit them back too if required. The SFA banned laps of honour for years afterwards. Those years were to be the most successful in Celtic’s history and thus their fans were denied the pleasure of seeing the players parade the many cups won in that golden era.

    BSR,

There are still a few tickets left on Ticketmaster.ie. By that I mean a very few, 135 euro for two.

  3. DeniaBhoy,

I agree.Beating them, rubbing their noses in it,seeing their miserable faces for weeks after, was always the highlight of my life, growing up supporting the Hoops.Bitter, hateful, you bet I am.It will give me the same pleasure gubbing this horrible new mob,as it did the other.I have never hated Hun players, only the vile hordes that follow them.

Wonder if Carl Lewis enjoyed the “competition” a doped-up Ben Johnson provided?

As Damo Lennon pointed out earlier, it’s so long since there was a “Rangers” living within its means that you simply can’t say how competitive it might be. My guess would be not very.

    BSR,

No bother, by the look of the stadium map there are very few left.

Ticketmaster.ie, for anyone looking to come over.

  6. Any Celtic fan who was there would put the 4-2,ten men won the league game second only to the Lions victory in Lisbon.Of course its fantastic to gub them.

Let’s hope it was a Tim who charged for the superfluous s inc Magic Hat on 30 plus on James’s Stag!!!

  8. I,and a lot of others on here can remember the “Pre-cheating “years.Apart from the SFA,and the MIB.If you think its bad now,let me tell you no way would Hibs have won that cup on Saturday.

The scum were always there of course, but we gave it back big time

I’m sitting here thinking, if Sports Direct cannot use The Rangers logo on any of their merchandise, he could just replace it with the number 2 with 5 flies hovering above it instead of stars. We’d all know what he was getting at.

Truly awful music on the live stream.

    Where’s the Dean Park album?

  11. Turkeybhoy @ 3:05

    Agreed.

For sheer drama, the 4-2 game is the best I’ve ever witnessed in the flesh …

  12. A thought occurred …

I’ve seen Rangers fans ‘celebrate’ victories way back to the 1950s. There is never the remotest sense of joy in their celebration. It’s all about hatred of Catholics, intimidation and the threat of violence. And it’s just the same when we lose.

Other Scottish supporters. are no angells including us. But for persistent hate none of them is in the same league as Sevco.

The conundrum is that many fine people support Newco but can’t see the full horror.

At the same time, if I never witness an atmosphere like ‘the Dallas game’ again, I’ll be very, very happy.

  14. Looking forward to hearing what Brendan has to say. Hopefully inspiring , unifying and Hun skelpingly good. A good Ulster man from Carnlough where I spent a few summers on Holiday at my uncles wee cottage. Used to be one of the places you could pick up Celtic games on the TV way back in the last century, that of course was if the atmospheric conditions were just right.

    Fáilte Brendan

  15. Here we go, here we go, here we go!

    Monday brought to a standstill.

Celtic YouTube streaming live on my PC, volume full.

    iPad catching the rest.

  16. Brendan formerly 'GG on

I think it’s sad that some men, boys and aging old curmudgeons will be at Celtic Park to meet the new manager.

    SAD. SAD. SAD,

SAD that I can only watch it streaming on the Celtic YouTube channel, to which I’ve been tuned for the last hour in case I miss something.

  17. There’s already Facebook clips of him arriving and talking to Summer..WTF where’s the live gig Sellik???

Who’ll will think of the Bhoys abroad in strange lands!
