Contrast with Celtic and Newco preparations

272

Celtic are two games into their preseason preparations and have another four friendlies before their first competitive game, Flag Day against Aberdeen on 31 July.  That is six games to get an entire squad fit and ready for 90 minutes football.  As you know, players are rotated during these games, with large numbers of substitutes used.  An exerting 90 minutes will only happen after a gradual build-up.

On paper, this should be enough preparation to face Aberdeen, who are going through a transformational summer that will under Jim Goodwin that will hopefully see them compete more effectively next season.

Newco are a puzzle.  They were unfortunate to have a game against Sunderland abandoned, that left them only three games before they travel to Livingston on league duty.  Even if the Sunderland game had finished as planned, they booked only four preseason games before travelling to Livingston.  This is more surprising when you consider that just days after facing Livi, they have a Champions League qualifier that could devastate their financial prospects.

There, they could face Monaco, who have already played three friendlies, Midtjylland, who also have three friendlies in the bag, Fenerbahce, who have played five, Sturm Graz, who have had an impressive seven outings this summer, or Belgian runners-up, Union Saint-Gilloise, who drew with Brighton in their fourth game in a fortnight.

By comparison, 45 minutes in the tank against Sunderland looks ill-prepared.  You and I have been there recently.  Celtic played four friendlies last summer before the visit of Midtjylland.  There were mitigating circumstances; most notably the late arrival and then isolation of our new manager.  This makes no sense.  Newco’s lack of game-time makes no sense, it cannot surely be just an oversight?

If anyone on here can figure out what goes on in the head of a professional footballer at key moments in a game ….

I thought he was just smacking the ball into the net in a meaningless sort of way ie a kind of celebration that his team had just scored but he got it wrong. Extraordinarily wrong !

Paddy Crerand was my favourite player of the time and, for me, was a class above all the others. So much so, in fact, that, again for me, Bobby Murdoch was ordinary by comparison. Bobby certainly developed though and became a truly excellent player. It is to his credit that he didn`t fold under the pressure of replacing Paddy C.

My first memory of Bobby Collins was when he played for Leeds ( I think ) against us in a Friendly and he looked a very good player.

Whilst agreeing with that , I have grown accustomed to it. It is the way our own fans fall for it all and repeat it ad nausem on here and elsewhere that disappoints me.

What were the reasons that we were so poor defensively in Europe last season .

  9. The wee barra (Bobby Collins) is the first Celtic player I was ever aware of (I kept looking for a wee barra-I was about 3 or 4). I really don’t know how good he was. Paddy Crerand (and his cousin Charlie Gallagher, whose 1st anniversary is today) were my favourite players but Bobby Murdoch, imo, eventually surpassed both, for his all round play. Both Paddy and Charlie were excellent passers of the ball; they didn’t have everything that Bobby had. Again imo, Bobby is the finest player I have seen in about 65 years of watching Celtic.

Pat Jennings,Neil Lennon and other players from what is perceived the nationalist community have no problem playing for the North.I,and many like me, have no truck with supporting ‘the North’,be it junior, senior or the ladies section. The hierarchy and it’s fan base is drawn exclusively from the unionist population and even though the sectarian chants and singing is not prevalent on match days the carrying of union flags and ulster flags leaves no one in doubt as to the allegiance of those assembled on such occasions.

  13. I wonder if any savvy CL posters can help me. I’m thinking of booking a holiday between September and November but want to make sure I don’t miss any of our Home Champions League fixtures. I believe we are going to be 4th seeds in whatever group we are in. Does anyone know the home and away match pattern for 4th seeds during the group stages?

Any information would be much appreciated.

  16. Bada, you’re a star. Thank you for the dates of the games. Do you, or does anyone else, know which games Celtic will be away from home. From memory, I think there is a pattern to the home and away fixtures for each seeded team.

  18. I’ve managed to track down last seasons CL groups and fixtures for all teams. UEFA seem to have departed from any pattern. It used to be something like H A A H H A for 4 th seeds and now it’s a very mixed pattern from one group to the next. I think they’re havena laugh at my expense (H A H A H A).

    Can’t wait!

There is no way of knowing home and away CL Group dates in advance until after the draw, which takes place on 25th August.

    …………….

I already know the dates and that we will be 4th seeds in our group. As I said above there used to be a pattern for the Home and Away fixtures for each seeded team. From checking the fixtures for each of last season’s 4th seeds there now seems to be no discernible pattern.
