Contrasting Christie when he’s moved right

433

That’s five consecutive wins after the post-isolation debacle in January but Aberdeen have never come closer to scoring in their six games without a goal than at Celtic Park last night.  The game was decided by the excellent 30-yard strike from David Turnbull that found the corner of the net and the almost-as-good shot from Aberdeen’s Kamberi that struck the post.

Celtic mastered the opening 30 minutes as Aberdeen were content to sit off, but there was no fluidity to our passing from the moment the visitors pressed.  This run of wins is as much as we can ask of the team right now, but it was far from reassuring.

I don’t think I have seen as big a contrast in a player’s performance when he switches positions than that of Ryan Christie, who looks like a £20m player in the No. 10 role and appears anonymous on the right.  For a whole raft of reasons, it is right to retain David Turnbull in the 10 role, but Ryan needs to do his work in the middle of the field.  When he stops deputising for injured James Forrest he should be cover for Turnbull or Neil needs to find him a deeper role.

Could you tell me where that link is , please?

  2. ” Tognozzi’s route to the top of European football has been something of an oddyssey around the continent but it’s perhaps no suprise to learn that his career kicked off in Italy’s lower leagues.

Working as sporting director, Tognozzi was first hired in 2007 by Pontedera, a regional side based in Tuscany, and spent three years there before joining Rosignano (currently in Italy’s fifth tier) in the same capacity.

He would only stay there for six months, though, before being recruited by Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg in 2011 where he worked as an international football scout for three-and-a-half years.

A move to Hamburg in the summer of 2014 followed where he again worked in a scouting capacity and a year later, he was snapped up by Bayer Leverkusen.

Tognozzi spent two years at the Bundesliga side before sealing a return to his homeland at Juventus in 2017. Initially, Tognozzi was the Old Lady’s foreign countries scouting supervisor but within a year, he was promoted to scouting manager – a position he holds until this day.”

Indeed I have ! I find this kind of thing fascinating. Head in the clouds and all that :-))

  8. Sorry, just don’t get all the negativity on here regarding Ryan Christie. He is one of the very few “footballers” at Celtic, with a great football brain to boot. Some say he doesn’t try, I don’t agree. There again, if as reported he is on £8 k week , and some real donkeys are on 5 times that, what would you do.

If we get say 10 million, where can we get a good replacement for that.

    Some people honestly!!!!!!!

  9. If we play 2 strikers we ,should go 3-5-2 .I thought after our goal and when Aberdeen came into the game our midfield was nowhere to be found. Our players in the midfield are attack minded, can’t defend or tackle but a new coach would help to give them some structure. He will have to strengthen the mf big time.

Today’s topic is the SPFL TV broadcasting deal, how does it compare to others? Here we go……

Always name and explain your use of sources, so today’s post is brought to you courtesy of wikis below. I’ve removed the EFL and USA from the analysis as relative outliers (EFL is a secondary league, and USA is a developing football market).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_domestic_football_league_broadcast_deals_by_country

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_in_Europe_by_GDP_(nominal)

Firstly let’s establish the main statistical parameters and their numbers for Scotland –

TV Deal Value – On a bland read of the stats out of the 21 listed leagues the Scottish TV deal at £30m per year comes in at rank 17th out of 21.

Population – This is relevant as a larger population provides for a greater potential market for broadcasters. Scotland is one of the smallest countries in the pool with a population around 5.4m, ranking it 20th.

GDP – Relevant as an indicator of the general wealth of the country. Scotland has a GDP around 305bn USD, ranked at 18th.

GDP per capita – Included to put GDP in context, as a more accurate indicator of the general wealth/spending power of individuals. Scotland’s GDP per capita is around 56k USD, which is ranked at a pretty impressive 4th.

Therefore for most of the bland stats Scotland ranks around 17-20th, it’s contemporaries here are generally the likes of Denmark, Norway, Austria, and Switzerland (Netherlands which is often quoted have triple the population and GDP). You’ll probably have worked out none of the statistics above on their own provide a clear answer and the truth lies in some combination or comparison of those stats, so this is where we’ll explore some potentially relevant areas.

TV deal per capita – As stated above a larger market would generally mean a larger deal, but how much is the deal worth for each member of the population. Scotland’s value here is 5.5, which ranks it at a respectable 10th, but below contemporaries Denmark and Norway (7.88 and 6.95 resp.).

TV deal per bn GDP – This will provide an indicator for how country wealth influences the TV deal. Scotland’s value here is 98k which places it at 15th, again below Denmark and Norway (135k and 101k resp.).

TV deal per game – How much do the broadcasters pay for each game televised. Scotland is a very strange outlier in this regard as the TV deal covers a ridiculously low 54 games. To put this in context the next lowest is Switzerland with 180, and the average (not including Scotland) is 282. Scotland’s value per game is £555k ranked at an impressive 8th, above all it’s contemporaries who are grouped around 17th.

    Conclusions

For clarity all the metrics are unsurprisingly dominated by the big leagues, England, Spain, Germany, France etc. There’s a clear correlation between population/GDP and size of the TV deal, but it’s not in direct proportion as TV deals generally drops more as these metrics fall (if you’re half the size don’t expect half the TV deal). Scotland scores pretty highly in most of the metrics, generally punching above where its population size and GDP would otherwise place it.

However the really telling stat is TV deal per game where Scotland ranks a lofty 8th, sharing airspace with the likes of Brazil and Belgium. This is mostly down to the bizarrely low number of televised games which we know are those featuring Celtic or sevco, there’s clearly a premium being placed on these games which is unique to the Scottish deal. Would a more competitive league mean a better TV deal? Potentially, all the other indicators suggest Scotland is in a relatively comfortable spot but the probable ceiling here would be on par with Denmark at £46m (for 340 games!). We return to the age old SPFL problem, the inability to sell the domestic game domestically. No one wants to watch Kilmarnock v Ross County, not even Kilmarnock or Ross County.

The big change seemingly is that 2nd place in EL will not guarantee last 16 anymore. 2nd place will go into ‘knockout play-off’ v’s 3rd CL clubs. It will likely be harder for Celtic to progress in EL under this new format.

Note – the CL format is likely to change again from 2024, whenever European League Body, ECA & UEFA come to an agreement for format to be taken from 2024 onwards.
