Contrasts when trying to punt or retain a left back

493

You well remember the entire Celtic community in a nervous disposition at the prospect of Kieran Tierney leaving the club.  There was certainly no campaign, subtle or otherwise, to punt him after his first weeks in the limelight, he was performing at a Champions League level and we wanted him to remain for as long as possible.

Compare and contrast to what is happening across the city, where left back and occasional central defender, Calvin Bassey, is being excitedly touted by everyone remotely connected with his club.

Earlier this month we discussed the many financial benefits Newco would gain from their Europa League run, including an appreciation on the perceived value of their players.  Bassey is a prime example.  Sell him, sell him now, before the inevitable return to the mean.  Do whatever you can to make sure highlights of his performances this year at Ross County, or home to Celtic, are obscured in searches.

Until recent weeks, it was their chubby striker who was the focus of sale efforts.  He missed out on European games since March, if anything his value will have suffered – a blow to a campaign that’s been running for years.

When transfer heat first took hold around Kieran Tierney, Celtic pulled the stops out and agreed a five-year contract.  The player had the same balance on his previous contract as Bassey has now.  Celtic got another two years out of the player and sold him for record terms (with a persistent injury).  If Newco were wise – and if they truly rate Bassey, they would spend some of their European bounty on securing the player on a lucrative long-term deal.

“If Newco were wise”, listen to me.

  2. Everton’s experience with Patterson May act as a warning for any would be Bassey admirers.

If anything the shameless attempts to flout Bassey would indicate that Sevco are very much in need of cash despite their euro billions…

Good afternoon from a very windy East Lothian. Been trying to put the roof on my new greenhouse for five days. No chance, would end up in North Berwick😱

Old Firm FC will have difficulty selling any of their dreck due to the ridiculous prices they stick on them. So far Paterson the only one and would be amazed if it was more than £5m

  7. Big unit, powerful and quick, with all the intelligence of Dorothy’s Scarecrow.

They’ll sell him now and get £10-£12m. Peanuts for an English side spending hundreds of millions of TV money.

The bigger story is how he transformed himself in the space of a year into the incredible hulk.

Yep, I said it last week. We’re in Hype-a-Hun season and the BBC/SMSM are happy to provide hype-to-order as usual.

T’was ever thus and Bassey is the new Moreloss/Kent.

Clubs surely look at data these days? They surely do the deep dive into a players history? They surely don’t look at a countries sports media, associated social media and say to themselves ‘hey They are all raving about xxxxxxx player, he must be great, let’s buy him at the figure a random ex employee, player or some pundit reckons he’s worth’?

    No?

At a time when we really should be looking forward, not only to next season, but to a couple of years down the road as one of the top 36 clubs in Europe, we do seem to be spending an inordinate time discussing thems. Almost as if we are being primed for spending some more time in the slow lane.

    Brilliant (lol) and well said.

  16. As a keeper upper of what’s being said, mainly for the funny bits,on Bears Den,they the fans are the ones who set the price. For a long time they have raged as they watched us,cash in big style on transfers. So they decided to buy their players up,tell the world how great they are,and name the price. Some examples,

    Barisic,from around 18 months ago,

“That’s him now a Croatian International, and we know how good they are.Puts him in the £ 20 million bracket.

    You get the drift,

Hagi £15- 20 million throughout the season that changes to,waste of space

Morelos,£15-20 million only when he is scoring, otherwise, take whatever.

They set the price, the SMSM go along with it,and there you go.After the break last season,50% were calling Bassey a dud. After a few good games,it becomes,£ 25 million.Media again takes up the mantra. We had it with Patterson, same. The problem is,so many of the EPL have so much money to throw away, they go for it.

A closer look at Bassey, who is a real lovely kid, should make most teams say, hold up there, but will they?.

  17. It looks like Sevco transfer supremo Ross Wilson has finally caught up with the rest of the class – epl clubs don’t pay big transfer fees for players over 25 unless they’ve proved themselves in a big league.

They’ve priced themselves out of sales for their stars for so long that they’re too old and have too little left on their contracts to receive a decent fee.

We’ve made our own mistakes over the years, but we’ve learned from them. What players to buy and when to buy and sell is a skill we’ve honed, but it’s also an absolutely essential part of our club and most like ours, who have to behave like adults and generate our own income.

They have made the most basic misjudgment of the market and are only here today because they’ve been bailed out to the tune of £100m.

All this Bassey baloney shows they’ve finally got it – clubs pay a premium for young players with few enough games that they are under the radar of the big clubs but with enough development potential and possible sell-on value. Get in often enough, early enough and you can get a vvd at 24 or a mane at 22.

Paul67’s been banging on about it for years and what Celtic look for on this sort of signing, but on a smaller scale. It’s not moneyball, it’s a basic understanding of the market

The Huns have, finally, caught up in their understanding, possibly by luck with the sale of Patterson. The hard work for them starts now though – sell your best players while remaining competitive.

  18. Assett management is a horrible phrase but it’s fundamentally important these days to all football clubs, but especially those who can’t rely on Telly money for a large percentage of their income.

We do it well, they stink at it

  19. See the ones moaning ab out the discussion today,it is close season, and no window open, just log off.

Or start another discussion.Or just log off.

    In fact,just log off.

  20. We can hazard a guess that they have had to pay Ashley several million to settle their dispute, something that their euro money allowed them to do.

Even after that, they are probably, for the first time in their existence, sitting on a surplus of cash. Problem is the core of the current team is out of contract between now and next summer. They have a major rebuild on their hands and they need to punt their crown jewels to finance it. For that reason the MSM will keep churning out the transfer headlines. Everyone and their dog knows they were desperate to punt Morelos but no club would bid anything near what they wanted which was circa 20 million. This summer, with one season left on his contract, they have the choice of accepting a “derisory bid” or seeing him walk for nothing.

    The same with Kent.

A very senior Ibrox employee, one who was there through most of this century, told me last month that the Europa run was just papering over the cracks and that they would have to sell big this summer. Granted, that was at the semi-final stage when they were expected to lose. But he knows the real financial picture over there.

CL money remains an absolute must for them.

  21. I’ve always assumed, that short of swearies and other related red card offenses, bloggers can instigate a thread about anything, even Celtic-related. Go for it. I’ll join in.

  22. Where would we and more importantly, they be now if we didn’t have intelligent and well-informed Celtic supporters like Paul67 keeping one eye on the misdemeanors of the ugly orcs?

I had never heard of EBTs before he brought it to our attention and I don’t think I’d be any the wiser today if we left it to the mainstream media.

  23. Big Wavy

‘Why Don’t You’ and its tagline was incredibly ironic wasn’t it?😎

  24. We need at least 4 Goalkeeper ,Center Half ,Midfieder some one like Wanyama ,possibly another striker,Centre Half like Big Bobo or Paul I forgot his name ,good defender.

  25. prestonpans bhoys on

From Ibrox noise, I rest my case why no one will entertain them with their ridiculous pricing😱

Rangers are set to destroy the Scottish transfer record with a potential £30M+ sale of Calvin Bassey. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
