Copa encouragement, wingers through Parkhead gates

346

Copa America took a turn for the better for Celtic last night.  Cameron Carter-Vickers’ second half appearance was not enough to prevent USA from losing to Panama.  That result leaves both sides on three points going into the final group game.  The USA face Uruguay (two wins from two) in their final game while Panama play Bolivia (two defeats from two).

The final group games take place on Tuesday, so Cameron could be back home to cast his vote on Thursday.  Let’s hope.

Alistair Johnston’s Canada need a point against Chile on Sunday to progress to the quarter finals.  Canada have the advantage as they got a better result against Peru but Chile are favourites to win.  It would be good to see both defenders home soon.

Sead Haksabanovic is one of a procession of wingers who passed through Parkhead gates over the last decade without leaving much of an impression behind.  At 25, he is still young enough to make a good career in the game, but as with all players, he needs a run of games.  Hopefully he’ll get that at Malmo.

England remind me of the huns, not only their supporters but a trait for first shot on target , back of the net 😡

Slovakia have shown no ambition to add to their goal and now get what they deserve

They had opportunities to get forward in England half, but not enough conviction.

I know there’s a lot of giving off about McCoist’s commentary but having to listen to Ronnie Whelan on RTÉ just as bad, said after England equalised, ‘England are still in this’, dear God what do they get paid for?

Any time they had a possible break on , they channelled the ball back . Also too many balls from their defence hoofed up to England players , giving possession away .

  5. Slovakia 3 very good chances before they scored, then they scored tried to sit on it, and, it was nearly enough, their legs went eventually and they lacked conviction to score again. They have missed a great chance to put England out, Southgate could be sacked tonight, don’t know if that has ever happened before but that team is much worse than the sum of its parts.

Ivan Toney has revealed he held talks with Rangers and Celtic over a move north of the border before joining Brentford.

The England international made the switch to the Bees from Peterborough while still in the English Championship and he helped shoot them to promotion before showing his ability in the English Premier League. The 27-year-old – currently serving an eight-month ban from the game for breaching FA betting rules – had a chat with both Steven Gerrard and Neil Lennon but opted to remain in England.

Opening up on the interest from both sides of the Old Firm divide, Toney told The Diary of a CEO podcast : “I did speak to other clubs. I actually went up to Rangers and spoke with the manager there, which was Steven Gerrard at the time. We spoke a bit, but there were two strikers at the time and they were looking to bring another one in, so there would’ve been four strikers. I think the formation that they played, the majority of the time was one striker up top. So I would have been third choice, something like this.

“We went to Celtic, we spoke to Celtic and I think it was the same there. I’m one of three strikers or something like this. I think at the time when I was moving, I wanted to be the main guy.

“The crucial thing for me is playing games. Even though I back myself and compete with other strikers, I want everyone to know that when I’m bursting through the door, I’m the main man up front.

“I feel like when I spoke to the manager at Brentford, he pretty much said you’re the main guy and I don’t see anybody taking your spot. So make sure you produce the goods, it’s yours really.”

  8. I actually thought that Slovakia would beat England, based on England’s individual and collective performances, and their lack of guile and goals. That still held for pretty much ninety minutes.

Great effort and some good football from the Slovaks, 45th in the world rankings dont forget.

Thought it was going to be another Iceland, not from 2016, but from a few weeks back at Wembley

I lived in England for many years. In spite of the almost hatred Scottish people have for England in sport, most English folk wanted Scotland to do well. The `attitude` , in my experience, is very much held by the Scots.

    Don’t believe the hype…

Toney wanted to sign for Celtic

Nick Hammond went down to Peterborough to close the deal

Barry Fry said Nick came down to do the deal but didn’t bring any money

Toney signed for Brentford AFTER Celtic had signed Albian Ajeti who was the cheaper option

    Football rivaly is healthy.

Hatred of a race is very unhealthy. The English people i know do not hate Scots as I do not hate tje English.

  17. How on earth was that Spanish goal allowed.

Numerous offsides in the build up.

  18. We can put the Scotland wee country excuse to bed forever.

A showing up in this tournament.

And while I’m at it, BR is surely looking looking at how Slovakia set up defence against a superior opposition.

    Their central defence was outstanding.

  19. Having lived in England for about 10 years and having had the fear of going to the World Cup final in Italy to see them win it. I really do understand the dislike of England sporting teams, their supporters and in particular the media.

The arrogance and entitlement of the fans for a nation of grand scale underachievement is astonishing.

1 World Cup and no Euro Wins for a station with the resources England has is a disgrace. 1 rugby World Cup and 1 50 over cricket World Cup at sports England plays and few others is just as bad.

The biggest issue is the support and their shameful behavior. Not just the hooliganism but the ‘Uber Alles’ attitude. Dambusters and German Bomber songs chanted all over Germany is best example.

It’s not a dislike of the people it is the way they are around sport. Farage and pals will get another boost from that tonight I am sure.

  21. ERATIC @ 9:03 PM,

Well yes, but we can look at the timeline and we can look at the facts…

Barry Fry, telling it how it is – July 2020…

“I’ve had experience with Celtic, so I know the score. I know the manager wants a tenth title and he’s identified our bloke as the best.

“Gavin Strachan’s gone there and he’s backed up the opinion of Toney.

“They’ve told Peter Lawwell and Nicky Hammond to go and get him, but they won’t get Toney with what they’re piddling about with, that’s for sure.

“Toney would be a revelation for Celtic, he’d be a star, for definite.

“He’d score 30 to 40 goals up there, he really would.

“Not only is he brilliant in the box, scoring and creating with his right foot, left foot and head, at six foot four he’s also our best defender.

“Celtic will get £40-50m for him.”

“Not only is he brilliant in the box, scoring and creating with his right foot, left foot and head, at six foot four he’s also our best defender.

“Celtic will get £40-50m for him.”

That certainly has the ring of truth – a couple weeks later we signed Ajeti, a couple weeks after that Toney went to Brentford.

Pretty much my thoughts too . I have good English friends and English relatives , and I have no dislike of the English as a nation . However , the rampant jingoism around their sporting and in particular football teams , makes me want to see them fail . Just the same as the SMSM propaganda around the Ibrox club makes me want them to fail .

However empire and the british state promote thro’, media and entitlement a deep disregard for lesser, according to them, countries. The continual condescension of scottish/welsh/jamaican/indian …the list goes on, is embarassing.
