Copenhagen defended their way to the knockout round

173

Celtic travel to Copenhagen on 20 February for their next Europa League tie, with the return game in Glasgow a week later.  Copenhagen are behind Midtjylland in the Danish league and finished second in their Europa group, behind fellow-Scandinavians, Malmo.

They drew 1-1 home and away with Dynamo Kiev, who were eliminated, so although this is a welcome draw, we have two hard games ahead.

Bizarrely, Copenhagen never scored or conceded more than one goal in any of their six group games.  Three 1-1 draws, two 1-0 wins against Lugano, currently sixth in the Swiss table, and a 0-1 home defeat to Malmo saw them defend their way to the knockout stage.

Considering some of the names in the unseeded pot, we have to be happy with the draw.

  1. IT was a pretty favourable draw.

In other news, please remember to vote for your best players from yesterday, by 10pm tonight – cqnpoty@gmail.com .

I’ve been unsuccesful so far at sourcing a re-run of the whole game so won’t be able to vote myself.

  2. They’ll be very rusty after their two month break, with only one game, the weekend before, between tomorrow and the first leg.

  3. Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen

    Copenhagen for me

  4. Well winnable this tie, if we have our best players available and strengthen at Centre forward in the window.

Nice for it to be the other way round for a change isn’t it

Or have the three centre forwards already in our squad fit and ready

Unfortunately Leigh is taking a long time to get back, Bayo unproven for me, need a quality Centre Forward, this will also help in the league this year.

  8. Funny moment , as they reveal CELTIC , the camera focuses on the representatives , unfortunately the camera man films the rangers reps , who cracks a smile and points behind him lol.

Cheers for the link to the Europa draw, like last Sunday my BT sports was showing “unsubscribed” managed to get it sorted before the final but didn’t have a spare hour before the draw today … I wish the “unsubscribed” channel would stop taking the cash from my bank on a monthly basis

Delighted with the draw … the Sevs in the last 16 would make the last 8 a distinct possibility :-)

I don’t think a striker signed two weeks before the first leg as cover for Edouard is going to make the difference in the games against Copenhagen.

We’ve got two months to get Bayo and Griff fit and ready, they’re more likely to make a contribution in February than someone who’s just been through the door

    Copenhagen 43

    Celtic 46

i’d say Braga are well chuffed

  12. CONEYBHOY on 16TH DECEMBER 2019 1:26 PM

Sevco got 4 points off Porto in the group stage.

Braga are 9th in the Portuguese league. Porto 2nd.

Both sides will fancy their chances.

  13. Paul67

Reasonable draw indeed, but much more pressing matters at hand starting with Tynecastle where the home club have an generic anti Celtic streak along with their struggling squad, but are sure to raise their game.

We’re solid at the back but have lost part of the dynamic of the side that beat Lazio home and away.

Time to rediscover form and shape, with an end the square peg in round holes experimenting?

  14. If reports are true that we are targeting Andraz Sporar of Slovan Bratislava as our next center forward, he is cup-tied for the Europa League so we will have to manage that competition without him. Pity as he has 6 goals in 12 matches in that tournament.

Two weeks, the window opens 1st of January and the next game is the 18th of January, Copenhagen 20th of February.

    _

With better finishing, we could have beat Hibs 4 or 5.

The 3-5-2 brought the best out of Frimpong but we lost James Forrest’s form

  17. I thought we played a 4-4-2 yesterday, but often fitted into a 3-5-2, with Bolingoli moving forward ?

  18. Incidentally I thought Nir Bitton done k at right back

    But

Why are we not seeing Bauer being given a run there ?

I thought he’s done ok when played ??

  19. Porto, finishing top of their group, have, IMO, a tougher draw than Sevco who finished second. Am I just paranoid or are they, once again, jammy bassas?

Incidentally, I won a pint by betting a mate that BBC lunchtime News would mention Sevco before Celtic re EL draws. They did.

  20. Norriem

Agree with you re Bitton`s general performance on Sunday.

Bauer? I think he is OK but, when either Frimpy or Big Tam are available, Herr Bauer would not feature for me.

Generally, I would play Jeremie at Celtic Park and Big Tam at Away venues.

  22. Hot Smoked,I agree with you.The Huns seem to get favorable draws from unfavorable positions. To be unseeded and draw a team sitting 9th in the Portugese league is bloody “jammy”.In saying that,I thought Porto were weak against the Huns.Very insipid,so who knows.

We deserve our favorable draw for our efforts against Lazio.Very winnable.

  23. Hot Smoked re above…1.59 not 2.03

I better get back on the booze…then I’ve got an excuse.

  24. Hot Smoked,

Also agree with the Jeremy,Big Tam thing, home and away.I did mention before, not keen on Lenny playing Boli and Jeremy in the same team.Well, not against good opposition.

  25. DESSYBHOY on 16TH DECEMBER 2019 1:47 PM

It’s less than three weeks from the end of the window to our first game against Copenhagen

Even someone signed halfway through the window is likely to have too little time to settle and make a real impact, especially when they’re back up.

We’d all love to get a top quality striker in early who’s able to make a serious contribution straight away but we knn b is it died to work like that. Recent experience shows strikers nerd a long period of bedding in

  26. TIMALOY29

Tend to agree, regarding James Forrest with neither Bolingoli or Frimpong standard ‘full backs’ NFL is deploying a back three, with both these guys much further forward, in a wing back role.

Think he did it yesterday to counter Hibs big men up front.

Bolingoli has been out for more than a month and his fitness and crossing will be great assets in that role. Jeremie Frimpong will likely play the role in most games, as it would be perverse to start anyone else, at the moment.

James Forrest’s absence from the right flank has seen a dip in his form, he’s still a threat, got his assist, but from right winger to leftie striker is a big ask for any player.

It’ll work in other games though, as he links well with Eddy, and will get more room to run than he did yesterday.

  27. Any striker we sign, will have the same problem as Griff, and Bayo.No game time when Eddy is fit.Would you rest Eddy in any game if he is fit?Don’t think Lenny would.Unfair to make any judgements on Bayo.Just not enough game time.Griff looking to be nearly back to his best, but again, difficult if you are only getting bits here and there.Dont think it would be a bad idea,to play 2 strikers at times.Griff likes coming in from the right,Eddy, the left.Cant see the problem.

  28. Can’t see why Lenny can’t play,if he wants his preferred two wingers,Jamesy in front of Jeremy, and Mikey or Mo,on the left. This chopping and changing positions is not helping anyone.Cant see a reason for it either.

  29. Series 4 of the Scandi Noir drama ‘The Bridge’ could start with a coach full of cheerful Celtic fans breaking down whilst crossing on it from Sweden to Denmark.
