Copenhagen defended their way to the knockout round

173

Celtic travel to Copenhagen on 20 February for their next Europa League tie, with the return game in Glasgow a week later.  Copenhagen are behind Midtjylland in the Danish league and finished second in their Europa group, behind fellow-Scandinavians, Malmo.

They drew 1-1 home and away with Dynamo Kiev, who were eliminated, so although this is a welcome draw, we have two hard games ahead.

Bizarrely, Copenhagen never scored or conceded more than one goal in any of their six group games.  Three 1-1 draws, two 1-0 wins against Lugano, currently sixth in the Swiss table, and a 0-1 home defeat to Malmo saw them defend their way to the knockout stage.

Considering some of the names in the unseeded pot, we have to be happy with the draw.

  1. So, if its possible, we could face The Rangers in the next round of the Europa League. We could also meet them in the Scottish Cup and that game could go to a replay, and having already played them in the League cup final and notwithstanding the 4 PL matches against them it is feasible that we could play The Rangers NINE times this season. Which begs the question, is that enough games for El Duffalo to get off his mark against us?

  2. So the long and winding road takes us next to Copenhagen, a chance to progress.

Don’t mix politics with sport and music Mr Stewart, however the response from the Green Brigadeers didn’t help our image either way.

  3. Braga topped their EL group which included away wins at Wolves, Slovan Bratislava and Besiktas. They were unbeaten and notched up 14 points, pipping Wolves for top place. Not so straight forward for Der Hun !

  4. Copenhagen is a good draw for us. They are beatable and will be just back from the winter break by 20 February. Does anyone know if the last 16 draw has any seeding?

I believe the Last 16 is a big open draw. We could, if they progress, get the Huns.

    Or Cluj……

    Fair enough draw for Celtic.

The BBC online reporting could have been written by Jabba himself.

    What you WON’T read

“The last time they met, Celtic progressed and Copenhagen didn’t”

“Braga and Rangers (sic) have never met. Braga were formed in 1921 and always pay their bills whereas Rangers (sic) play at Ibrox”

  7. Wonder in any of Der Hun hurried to book their cheap Braga trip for Thursday 27th ?

It’s actually being played the night before, Wed 26th – was announced before the draw on TV. Still they’ll blame PL and corrupt UEFA / SFA / SPFL etc etc ….

Cheers for the heads up, considering Nir could sign a pre-contract in a few weeks time I think this is terrific news

I believe that tomorrow’s game is a result of playing the cup final. Anyone know why the Huns are not playing too. Well apart from making December a bit easier for them

  11. Bitton is a decent player who can play in a number of positions. May not make our strongest eleven but a very useful squad player he would cost 3 or 4 million to replace. I think it is a good move by the Club.

  12. Not sure about the GB telling Rod Stewart very publicly to F off, I’ve always been a fan of his music, he’s very pro Scotland, obviously a huge fan of Celtic, gets us lots of free publicity and seeing him in Rome celebrating with the Celtic fans convinced me he’s one of the good guys.

OK he’s not perfect but who is? I like the GB and wish them all the best / did not like seeing them banned / but oh my daze – they certainly know how to overstep their mark, their a young team so I’m guessing Rod Stewart means absolutely zero – to them.

  13. Celtic have been given a €16,000 fine from UEFA for setting off fireworks in their Europa League tie at Stadio Olimpico against Lazio.

    Hey G.

Are you enjoying your time off?

Poor Dallas was working ever so hard today :-)

Not sure about Art of War though. :-)

I think today’s draw has to be the best we could have hoped for (maybe only Ludogorets and APOEL would be preferable): geographically close; from a small league and not a great team by all accounts.

We should be going into this game with high confidence given that: (1) Malmo topped the group (Malmo are 3 points ahead of AIK who we battered in qualifying after the disaster of Cluj and with a new defence, so I doubt Malmo are great) and (2) Copenhagen are 7 points behind Erik’s team (albeit with a game in hand) and Sevco knocked them out in qualifying, winning home and away.

A couple of points on the weekend:

    -Neil only trusts three wingers at the club- JF, MJ and Elyounoussi, that’s why we played 3-5-2 with wing backs. We therefore need another RW winger;

    -JF looks like he needs some competition/rest. He has been magnificent in the European campaign but his game entails a lot of running and I think a break would stand him in good stead;

-JF played a lot of the game both further forward and more central than OE. If that is the tactic, why not play LG or Bayo from the off. Too frequently we had no one in the box occupying their CBs. I saw Morelos’ goal for Sevco. An average ball into the box, a scuffed shot and then a second attempt which trickled under the keeper’s gloves. We need someone in the box who can do the same. Bayo got two goals against hearts (overruled by Craig Levein) by being in the middle of the box attacking crosses. It would be good to mix it up once in a while and have two strikers on the park (particularly as two of them badly need the game time).

Cheers, love a few days off especially a Monday off, although school run at 8.45am, nursery pick up at 12.45pm and back to the school for 3pm pick up, far busier than sitting at a desk but much more enjoyable :-)

Fling in school disco tomorrow so extra pick up and drop off at lunchtime … back to work on Wednesday for a rest

Hope your enjoying some of the football Neil has this team playing

    He’s a racist arsehole.

I’ve never understood why Celtic fans think he’s a good guy.

“I think Enoch [Powell] is the man. I’m all for him. This country is overcrowded. The immigrants should be sent home.”

  18. the Danes are happy and Celtic are happy where does that leave us, we’re all happy with the draw. On a serious note, it’s a good draw for Celtic and for a change the Danes will be playing us after a long winter break. No pushover, but with a full side Celtic should progress. Newco have a difficult tie but let’s hope both Glasgow sides progress for coefficient and we want them to be playing extra matches like Celtic. Hopefully another three points on Wednesday night.
