Corner frailty against Brazilian imposters

115

Celtic have played lower league opposition three times this season but last night was surely the most ineffective performance we’ve seen from a football team in some years.  Dunfermline limited Celtic to two goals and – to be fair – Jim McIntyre spotted a defensive weakness at corner kicks, which his team were able to exploit twice, almost leading to a goal on one occasion, but there was none of the coordination and skill we faced against Falkirk, Ross County and arguably, Peterhead.

How they had the audacity to walk onto a football field dressed as Brazil we’ll never know.

After the first Dunfermline corner ‘scare’ (I’m being generous) I watched the setup for their second half corner attempt.  Celtic had 10 defenders inside the box, including Fraser Forster, against five Dunfermline attackers.  Defensively, we looked well setup, but the delivery was particularly good, an in-swinger, dipping beyond the far post into a secondary zone.

Defending zonally (which I am in favour of with a small concession to man-mark one or two key threats) involves protecting the key areas in front of goal, where opponents are most likely to score from.  This compromises peripheral areas, in particular the acute angles before the front post and beyond the back post.  When you get a good delivery from a corner kick, as Dunfermline provided last night, forwards can attack the area in front of the near post looking for a glancing header, or rush to the back of the six yard box, from where they can deliver a reverse ball into the primary danger area.

For all their frailties, they figured out how to get the better of Celtic at corner kicks.

“If the money for the wages had been guaranted by someone and they are due today I’d guess redundancies could hit tomorrow as the Administrators will not want to be running up a bigger fresh wage bill than is neccesary!”

Whether or not Dave King has money, I doubt he will be spending it on a pre-liquidation team, or prior to the courts clearing up who gets the debt-dome.

    Football’s Next Star

RTÉ is looking for Football’s Next Star. We’ve teamed up with one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Celtic FC and together are on the hunt for one Irish boy, with not only a passion for football but an exceptional talent, who will win a dream place in Celtic’s Youth Academy and train with one of Europe’s most successful teams.

It’s every boy’s dream – could you have what it takes to be football’s next star? Then go on, give it your best shot!!

  6. Could we see redundancies soon at a club in Glasgow

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch has admitted the club may not have enough money to see out the season.

Birch addressed fans for an hour at Fratton Park on Wednesday, a day when 33 members of staff were made redundant.

However, he says he was left with little choice but to make cuts as he tries to ensure the club’s remaining money lasts as long as possible.

“We are struggling to make the end of the season,” Birch told BBC Solent.

Trevor Birch meets Pompey fans – key points

The club are struggling to have enough money to make it to the end of the season

Chief executive David Lampitt was let go for financial reasons (as with the 33 other redundancies)

Trevor Birch not expect to make any more redundancies.

The Football League will not let them bring in any more players in unless they go down to 14 fit players

A players’ representative will meet with Birch on Thursday where Birch will ask them to defer some wages until end of season

Birch will decide who the club is sold to and not creditor Balram Chainrai

Administrators are open to the idea of a supporters trust buying the club.

Portsmouth entered administration last week for the second time in three years, for which they were docked 10 points by the Football League to leave them in the Championship relegation zone.

Players and staff have not been paid since December, and chief executive David Lampitt was made redundant on Wednesday along with other senior members of staff.

I dont think it will happen but if King or anyone else makes a take over bid for Rangers they will have to have very deep pockets to even get them back into a positive balane the sum would likely be a £100 Million plus. Then they would have to improve the player pool so imo they would be a very weak side for many years to come. Now these guys who are sniffing about Murray,King etc would never say it in public but they would prefer liquidation in order that they could take on Newco Rangers and build a new club and remove the massive debts I said over a week ago there are plenty of vultures wanting to pick over the bones of the disgraced club.H.H.

Got to disagree with you, I thought Dunfermline were very effective indeed in what they tried to do. Ok they were not Brazil, indeed they were not even the Blue Brazil, but they stayed on their feet, worked hard and kept their positions. And their goalkeeper had a very good game. Speaking of corners, one of Dunfermline’s few breakaways in the first half came from a corner, one of ours, when we played it straight to the Pars! Maybe need to address that too!

  12. Folly Folly:

COMPLETELY agree on what you said about corners.

Don’t know why I just always like having 3 up.

    Especially against far bigger teams.

Preferably either the 3 shortest or 3 fastest (say last night: Hooper, Commons and maybe 1 such as Brown/Stokes nearer the edge of box, where they stop lay-off corners for shooters and are in a better position for second balls)

If you put 2/3 at the half-way then the defense needs at least that many back. they have 1 taking the corner, Keeper, call it 3 defenders back and suddenly the MOST they have in a box is 6, more likely 5 with one at edge; while we have keeper and 7 outfielders.

Forgot to say before, Paul67, Thank-you. This site is just incredible. Just cant get enough says it all.

I thought our play was brilliant last night. Superb football throughout the game. Passing and moving and tricks, dummies and flicks for our entertainment. I was delighted to see so many players shooting from distance and troubling the goalie. Charlie’s magnificent rocket, Kris Common’s with two shots that the goalie could only parry, Hooper and Ki also making great efforts. I thought Ki and Commons played very well as did Charlie and Joe Ledley. Cha was brilliant going down the wing with pace and power but his final ball was often woeful and only once can I remember him finding a hooped jersey with a ball into the box. If he could improve on this by even 50%, he would be a top class player. So many other good performances from our lhads as well.

Keep it up Celtic. Let’s create a new record. It’s great to be talking about our Bhoys again rather than obsessing over every little bit of information regarding the struggles of RFC.

Ernie, I agree with you about Hugh MacDonald. He’s a self-confessed Celtic supporter. It might be difficult for him to come out and CCuse Ogilvie of being in an untenavble position but by doing what he has done, the followers of TFOD will be quick to pick up on it and our own people will then come out and indicate the historical position of Ogilvie during EBT introduction at Rangers and Hearts.

  19. Last week or was it the week before I watched an EPL or FA Cup game and Andy Townsend was picking over the carcass of the game. Can’t remember the teams but one lost a goal from a corner and the other didn’t.

When dissecting the goal conceded they pointed out a number of players who “lost their man” allowing them to apportion blame and therefore there job is done.

They then discussed the non-conceding of a goal and Townsend said “I’m not in favour of the zonal marking, you can’t point the finger at the person who has not done his job”. Really, that’s a reason for not linking the system?

Anyway, where am I going with all this nonsense. My point is, we don’t concede many goals and even fewer from corners. The man on the post did his job of clearing the ball. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

On the other hand, we have scored goals from corners recently no doubt to the chagrin of the “another corner to Celtic, no goal” brigade.

By way of prediction: When we DO lose a goal from a corner, and it will happen, zonal marking will be blamed and there will be cries of “if only we had been man-marking”. Yep, if only we had been man-marking we would have conceded many more goals at corners prior to that.

  20. Worried about King?

With his tax history in South Africa he has no chance of being passed as a fit and proper person to own any club.
