Corporative governance, dubious integrity, who else could it be?

732

Charles Green’s media team did well a week ago today.  The Sun had an extremely damaging story on Green but demoted it to page six while dedicating its front page to the man himself, but the consequences of the story remain.

The Daily Record, who today confirms they are being fed stories by Ally McCoist, also reveal that The Rangers International board’s chairman, Malcolm Murray, is one vote short of being able to sack chief exec Green.  Adding, without a hint of irony, “once again, it falls on this newspaper to inform the fans of what is really going on”.

Sacking Green should be fairly straightforward but while this will remove one pantomime act from the stage, the corporate governance issues remain.  While he is in charge at least Green is available to assist the club prepare against charges by Craig Whyte that it inappropriately acquired* assets belonging to his company [“You are Sevco”: (Green)], Sevco 5088 Ltd.

If the chairman fails to sack the chief exec and fellow directors, Brian Stockbridge and Imran Ahmed, at next week’s board meeting, several non-executive directors might find it difficult to continue to pick up wages for providing oversight on behalf of stakeholders to ensure the club’s business was conducted appropriately.

Fortunately for Green he retains the support of his fellow collaborators, although his enablers in the media and support are diminishing by the day (bless all their sterling work).  Green will go when it suits Green to go, most probably when he has found a suitable proxy to ensure his interests on the board are protected (as Whyte believed he had a year ago).  This is likely to happen when he wants season ticket renewal money in.  He’ll drift away, “true Rangers men” will front things for a while, but pantomime isn’t over.  The serious corporate governance questions overhanging the club right now grow by the day.

I wonder if journo who moved to Ibrox as he couldn’t stomach the dubious integrity of the media industry (Green’s former chief-enabler) has the front to come out batting for Green. Or is he too scared?

Speaking about dubious integrity….. has anyone thought of the excuse the SFA will come up with to overlook the link between Whyte and Green on Newco’s associate membership application? I expect they will appoint Mr Bryson to head up an inquiry which will find, “There was a link but as we didn’t know about the link at the time we cannot take any action”.

* Tried really hard here to think of a less pejorative word or phrase than the one which initially sprung to mind.

  11. STV

Rangers chief executive Charles Green signed off on Craig Whyte’s appointment as a director of the company behind his planned buyout, according to documents lodged at Companies House.

Documents seen by STV show Mr Green’s signature verifying the appointments of Mr Whyte and his associate Aidan Earley as directors of Sevco 5088 Limited.

This appears to contradict a statement made by Mr Green in an interview with STV this week. When asked what part did Mr Whyte and Mr Earley have in Sevco 5088, he said: “Neither of them had a role in Sevco 5088.”

The revelations are the latest in the dispute between the former Rangers owner and the current chief of the club.

Rangers have not yet responded to STV and it is unclear whether they accept the validity of the documents.

The directorial appointment forms, which have been filed several months late, show the signatures of the former Sheffield United chief executive, alongside those of Mr Whyte and Mr Earley. It is believed the forms were signed during a meeting in London on May 9, 2012, three days before Duff and Phelps signed an offer letter with Sevco 5088 in a £5.5m deal for the club’s assets.

According to records at Companies House, Sevco 5088 was created as an off-the-shelf company by a Cardiff-based secretarial firm on March 29, over a month after Rangers were put into administration on February 14.

The appointment forms for the company, which is registered to the address of London legal firm Field Fisher Waterhouse, were lodged with Companies House on Friday.

Companies House confirmed the documents had been accepted but had not yet been scanned in to be made available on its website.

CAN YOU HEAR THE PENNIES DROP :)

    ———————

The problem here is that SevCo 5088 did provide payment for the exclusivity.

If Whyte was a director and had paid to set up this firm, it could get messy.

Whyte might get a payout here.

Does that strike anyone else as rather odd – given that it actually happened a fair old while ago? I thought changes had to be submitted within 14 days?

  25. Auldheid @ 18:00,

    Well said.

Who would have thought it could have gotten any more farcical. Words and phrases like “astounding”, “sublimely ridiculous” have been used up way before now, yet here we are again. We’re now rendered speechless at the institution that is at the root of all this nonsense. The SFA.

The tragic irony at the end of it all is that, after Jock Stein had taken this country to great heights, they have since ruined Scottish football, always and only with the sole (fish pun) objective of protecting one rotten football club. Now this rotten football club has proved it is beyond help.

Yet, Livingston were bankrupted due to Minty and his supporters in the banking industry putting on the pressure. Look at St Mirren now. Dunfermline. Hearts. All these clubs and more – including Celtic before Fergus stepped in, so this kills the theory of financial reasons for protecting the said club – considered absolutely expendable just to give that club another helping hand.

If the brown-brogued muppets at Hampden had made sure that all clubs had followed proper rules, not only would Scottish football be far stronger, but that rotten club would also be all the healthier for it, in so many ways. Culturally as well.

The ridiculousness of it all knows no end. Of course, for us our main concern is Celtic, but while stuck playing here, at least we’ve been well aware of the importance of playing in a healthy league. Due to our paranoia, we seemed to be the only club who understood the importance of decent football administration.

Or should we be blaming the football clubs, Celtic PLC included, for showing no desire to tackle (2nd fish pun) this issue properly since Farrygate?

Apols for the bad prose, like everyone, we’ve all got too much to say on this saga. I never did last the pace to find out how War & Peace ended. I only got as far as page 30 before I realised there were too many protagonists involved to keep up.
