COVID 19 RULES: CELTIC IN CRUCIAL TALKS

CELTIC hierarchy are poised to challenge the government’s strict coronavirus guidelines.

The champions were hit by a double blow yesterday when they were told they could be without Odsonne Edouard AND Ryan Christie for the Glasgow derby against Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox outfit at Parkhead a week on Saturday.

The French striker tested positive for covid-19 with his country’s Under-21 squad while the Scotland international midfielder was ordered to self-isolate for 14 days after team-mate Stuart Armstrong also failed to pass a UEFA procedure.

The playmaker and his former Hoops pal Kieran Tierney had to leave Steve Clarke’s pool of players after coming in contact with the Southampton star as the Scots prepared for this evening’s Euro 2021 semi-final against Israel at Hampden.

Reports indicate Edouard has been given the all-clear to return to Scotland next week, but according to a report in the Daily Record, talks between the Celtic chiefs and the health authorities continued late last night and a definitive answer is expected today.

The club’s top scorer last season with 28 goals is now in quarantine in Paris while the Hoops bosses are demanding to know why Christie must be isolated for a fortnight despite posting a series of negative tests since playing as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win over St Johnstone in Perth on Sunday.

A club statement said: “Following today’s news regarding Ryan, he has reiterated his adherence to all relevant protocols while away on inter-national duty.

“In light of this, Celtic confirmed today that it aims to open dialogue with the Scottish government and other authorities to fully understand the self-isolation procedures for players who continue to deliver negative test results, as Ryan has.”

Christie added: “I am so disappointed by the events of today and the potential effects this could have on my country and club.

“As I have operated within these protocols for such a long time now, I am well aware of all the rules and social distancing from team-mates has become the norm and something I have observed.

“The situation is very frustrating, particularly as I don’t believe I have done anything wrong.”

Celtic are hoping for clarity on the situation concerning both players by this afternoon at the latest.
