Covid, isolating and our European jeopardy

284

A St Mirren player tested positive for Covid and now a Hamilton player is self-isolating after ”coming into close contact with a player from another club who has tested positive”, presumably the unnamed St Mirren player.  Due to their age, footballers are largely immune to the worst dangers of Coronavirus, but you can see where the jeopardy lies for clubs.

If St Mirren are able to stop the disease spreading to the rest of the squad it is a testament to their safety procedures, but it is likely many others at the club were in close proximity to the player during the incubation period.

This is going to be a feature of the season; players will be required to isolate, some fixtures will be postponed.  In Europe, it will be different.  Our Europa League qualifier two weeks from today cannot be postponed by more than a couple of days.  The final qualifier is three weeks today, between now and then every precaution must be taken to limit exposure for the players and backroom staff.

With pubs open for business to show Saturday’s Ross County – Celtic game, the need to run tests to learn what is achievable has never been greater.  Cancelling controlled tests with no more than 300 spectators, where every piece of medical and scientific evidence assures us would all be entirely safe, would be classic bad government.  We need to test practically every aspect of society for its health implications.

I was deep in the Acid House.

The Amazing thing is you could win 18-0 but it is much mair likely to be 18-17.

  2. Our dear leader Nicola Sturgeon wanted 2 Celtic games cancelled over the Boli saga.

Now we have a St Mirren and Hamilton player potentially spreading the actual virus nobody cares.

Maybe it was always about cheap headlines eh?

  3. Don’t comprehend this misty eyed romanticism over a player who coulda cemented his place in Celtic’s quest for domestic glory, yet felt he needed a bigger stage (bigger than us?) on which to strut his mercurial brilliance.

Same kinda player as Arzani, Mikey J and Shved, ; flash skills but actually only in flashes.

Still seems a nice lad w big potential. But for that Karamoko, Frimpong, and even Harper merit a go.

We’re Celtic and – for the 10 – we need finished articles from guys that want to make history. HH

..and even Harper merit a go.

    —————————

Heard a few people mention Harper – I don’t think I have seen him at all. What position is he / have you seen much of him?

Wee Karamoko – I know this might come back to bite me, but I’m not 100% convinced yet. There are loads of youngsters who are head and shoulders of compatriots in their age groups, but don’t translate that at senior level.

Just to completely defeat my own argument here, though – usually that is due to said player developing physically more quickly – so tallest, fastest 14 year old prodigy scoring 5 a game becomes average when compatriots catch up.

    Anyway – Harper – I’ll try to find footage…

Back to 5-a-sides tonight for first time in 7 months – my knees and ankles – and lungs – are quaking at the thought.

  5. Well done Nicola.

While most on here, well a few,are slaughtering Nicola, for whatever reasons come up their SNP hating humph that day, not a word about the whole of the UK,being dragged into a No Deal Brexit by this vile Tory party.Deliberately breaking International law and throwing the Good Friday agreement into real danger.A disaster for Scotland. But that’s OK,we will just whinge that Nicola is asking everyone to obey the simple Covid rules,to try and keep people safe.

Sometimes you just have to shake your head and say,”WTF is wrong with some people”.

…the whole of the UK,being dragged into a No Deal Brexit

…and they are now saying it could be a positive outcome!!! Willful idiocy.

You try not to think about it – partly because you now cannot do anything about it – but I really do despair at the prospects for us under the control of a Westminster Tory Government unfettered by some of the external controls that EU membership entails.

Ooops – strayed into politics – don’t have time to get into lifeblood-sucking arguments about that on here, so will now stray back out again…

  7. TIMALOY 2,

Not a cheap headline at all.Aberdeen, and a Celtic player were seriously out of order. We were just trying to get the league up and running for Gods sake. The punishments dished out were very light, and a well timed shot across the bows.If no action had been taken, who knows where we would be today.A free for all.”Well they did it,how am I getting punished and they did’nt”

  8. BGFC – R winger with big raps about him, but not seen him in live games. Point being, unless we selectively blood our own bairns, they’ll defect to lower leagues. No more guarantee that PR would do us a turn than a hungry youngster looking to make himself a hero in the 10IAR season.

Enjoy 5s; remember to stretch ;) HH

Sorry about your ongoing health problems, but if as “they” say your heart could not take a by-pass, then what do they suggest.

I don’t know you, but you sound to me like a real tough old bird and I think you should persist with the triple bi-pass. But, I am no medic.

    All the best to you.

  12. I do detest the obsession some folk have on CQN with politics. BUT (and I feel it isn’t too hypocritical of me) I do feel that all of us resident in Scotland do need to contemplate what life is going to be like under the current Tory Government from next year. To say I am alarmed at the very prospect in an understatement.

AS part of the 2017 Lions’ Legacy fundraising campaign, Celtic FC Foundation undertook a joint venture with Mary’s Meals to build 67 Kitchens in Africa; 47 in Malawi and 20 in Zambia.

The 67 Kitchens are now fully operational, with the number of children enrolled at those schools totalling 44,459.

In keeping with Mary’s Meals’ successful model, the Kitchens are located in school grounds, to encourage learning and increase opportunities. The aim is that every child is provided with one daily meal at school where they receive an education that can, in the future, be their ladder out of poverty.

Following our previous investment of £356.5K, we are now delighted to announce that a balance of £100K has been donated to Mary’s Meals, to help contribute towards the feeding and maintenance costs of these kitchens.

This has been raised largely by CSCs and individual supporters through sponsorship of the 67 Kitchens and we are so grateful for this magnificent contribution.

This phenomenal effort will ensure that each of these Kitchens continues to provide much needed meals to hungry children across Malawi and Zambia, every school day.

Speaking of the donation, Celtic FC Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell said: “We are absolutely thrilled to provide further support to one of our long standing charity partners in Mary’s Meals, through this wonderful £100K donation.

“The Celtic support have, as they always do, got behind this initiative in a tremendous way and their efforts will help ensure that these Kitchens will continue to prosper and improve the lives of some the world’s most impoverished children.

“I would like to extend our thanks to everyone who has been involved in making this project such an enormous success over these past three years.”

Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton added: “Celtic FC Foundation are delighted to make this additional contribution towards the 67 Kitchens project. Thousands of children are now being fed at school, which is such an integral and crucial element of the Lions’ Legacy. We must express our gratitude to Mary’s Meals for all of their efforts throughout this wonderful partnership.

“The backing we have received from our supporters, as always, has been truly incredible and, thanks to their endeavours, we can assist Mary’s Meals in sustaining the feeding and maintenance of these kitchens. A huge thank you to all of the supporters’ clubs and individuals who have generously sponsored a Kitchen. And great thanks too to our dear friend, Scottish artist Gerard Burns, for his ongoing support in this and other Celtic FC Foundation initiatives”.

Daniel Adams, Executive Director of Mary’s Meals, said: “This incredible donation from Celtic FC Foundation and its generous supporters will help us to keep reaching hungry children in Malawi and Zambia, with life-changing meals.

“Receiving this gift, on top of the support we have already had from the Lions’ Legacy campaign, has brought us unexpected joy. It is particularly appreciated in a year that has been so difficult for us all, and that has seen hunger reach acute levels in a number of the places where we work.

“The unmatched kindness of Celtic supporters across the globe is a legacy that will transform the lives of children in some of the world’s poorest communities for generations to come. Thank you!”

Celtic FC Foundation’s current focus is on the ongoing Football for Good Fund, which is providing food and essentials to those most in need within our communities.

Since the launch of the Football for Good Fund and throughout the coming months, the Foundation have ensured and will continue to ensure food parcels, basic necessities, hot meals and other critical interventions are available to the growing number of people affected by the ruthlessness of COVID-19.
