CQN 11 Knocking it out the park

1030

Where to start on last night’s CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner?  We knocked it out the park.  Hundreds came, thousands of pounds were raised, enough to help Mary’s Meals build a kitchen for a thousand more school kids in Malawi, and a £5,000 donation to Lisa Hague’s 30k Challenge for Marie Curie Challenge for Cancer Care.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along and made the night so special, especially those who stepped forward and helped Mary’s Meals and Lisa’s Challenge.  The night could not have happened without Phil Agnew’s experience, work and charm.  He is a credit to everything good about the Celtic support.

Special thanks to Tom Boyd, John Hughes, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne, who added range to the night at the Q&A session.  Thanks to Stuart Armstrong, who dropped in to spend an hour with us, and share some of his undisguised joy at being a Celtic player.

Archie Macpherson spoke about the world Jock Stein blew apart when he arrived at Celtic 50 years ago this week.  Archie’s range on Scottish football is peerless.  He became a friend and confidant of Jock, and gave us an insight into the extraordinary man.

No St Patrick’s Night would be complete without great music and for that our thanks to Patricia Ferns and Liam McGrandles, and a special mention those who put their shoulder to the wheel on the night, especially Geo from Biglens and the great hospitality staff at Celtic.

I’ve many people to catch up with but I’m planning to sleep for the next several days.  Cup Final apart.

If all weekends were like this weekend………
If all gatherings were like Celtic gatherings……….

The United fans will be having a minutes applause in the third minute to remember Frank Kopel and to both highlight and bring about a change in the way dementia sufferers are cared for in Scotland. Younger Dementia sufferers are excluded from much of the help available to older folk.

The action has been organised by the fan community group United for All, who will unfurl a banner on Sunday at Hampden urging action from the Scottish Government who’ve so far failed to deliver changes to the law.

  7. ***LMS4*** – THE LAUNCH!

Welcome back after a short break to LMS 4, which kicks off next weekend (Saturday 21st March) and we now have our very own unique email addy! So with everything for this particular competition can you please use cqnlastmanstanding@gmail.com .

This is the final competition of the season and we will continue to support Shay Bhoy McGinley and his very young family, thanks to your incredible support.

The competition will cost £10 each to enter, and like in LMS3 you will be allowed to buy extra lives in rounds 1 to 3 for a similar amount. Payout will again be 50% to the Last Man Standing and 50% to Shay Bhoy.

And all you have to do to is simply select a unique winning team each week from the list of fixtures provided. Dead easy :-) How can you fail not to win? :-)

So to register, you must firstly send us an email (TO THIS NEW EMAIL ADDRESS PLEASE) and secondly make payment by Friday 20th March. If you do not do both you will not enter the comp. Of course you will also have to also select your team.

Payment can be made by bank transfer and the details can be sent once we receive your ‘I’m in’ email. Or you can pay CRC or Jobo before Wednesday’s cup replay.

    The rules will follow shortly…

Result,I was sure it started yesterday and that I’d picked Man City!

  9. ***LMS4*** – THE RULES!

Firstly, if anyone hasn’t received our invitation emails – perhaps you’ve not participated before – but fancies joining in, just drop us an email to the address below or to jobobaldie@yahoo.com

The rules are pretty simple. Once you register your interest in taking part here’s how it works.

    1. Each week we’ll issue an email with the forthcoming set of fixtures to choose from. In general this will consist of the SPFL top flight games and the matches involving the top 4 in England. But there may be the odd occasion when this changes, particularly on cup and/or international weekends.

    2. Each week you choose just one team and provided that team wins then you are still standing and through to the next week.

    3. Once you have chosen a particular team you cannot choose them again. THE ONUS ON KEEPING TRACK OF THIS LIES WITH EACH COMPETITOR as

we don’t always get a chance to check every selection made prior to the games kicking off. But if you need to double check, email us with plenty of notice we’ll try to help you out.

    4. If you pick the same team twice you’re aff oot! But see Rule 6

    5. If your team fails to win then you fall out of the competition. But see Rule 6

    6. If you fall out in weeks 1 to 3 (inclusive) you have the option of restoring your ‘fit and proper competitor’ status and paying your way back in with a further £10 donation [you can do this if you are unsuccessful in weeks 1, 2 and/or 3 and can do so more than once – this is, after all primarily about raising funds;-) ].

    7. You must send in your selection before your team’s particular game kicks off. So watch out for Saturday lunchtime or Friday evening fixtures.

    8. As a rule of thumb, the selections will be collated and monitored by me. In an effort to be transparent I will announce my own pick when issuing each week’s fixture list. Until I drop out!.

    Good luck!

The Franks’ Law campaign is worthy of recognition at a number of levels.

The group behind it – United for All – is a local 3rd sector organisation who use engagement in sport to help improve the wellbeing and employment prospects of individuals.

The aim of the campaign is to influence a change in the law for Adults suffering from degenerative conditions such as dementia and MS. At the moment, personal care is provided free of charge to persons over the age of 65. For those under 65, there is no personal care provision, such that care needs to be paid for.

The campaign was seeded in the case of Dundee United full back Frank Kopel, who was diagnosed with dementia aged 59, and died 6 years later from the illness. His care at home until his death was paid for by his family, in contrast to those over 65 years old.

The campaign in essence seeks to remove what is age discrimination in the provision of care.

The campaign will this afternoon at the League Cup Final seek to influence Scottish Government to change this, using Football as a vehicle to change the Law.

Scottish Government Minister for Health and Wellbeing – Shona Robison – has confirmed she’ll be at Hampden for the Game. She happens to be a Utd fan btw.

Fans of both teams are asked to show support for the campaign with a round of applause on the 3rd minute.

Football and social justice. Seems to me to be a very ‘Celtic’ thing to do.

The LC is crap. As is Hampden. As are our opponents. Still want to win though.

Agree with much of what Alfie said earlier. Our pissheads can always flourish in our crap domestic games but the unprofessionals tend to suffer in Europe.

    Enjoy the game.
