CQN 11 Knocking it out the park

1030

Where to start on last night’s CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner?  We knocked it out the park.  Hundreds came, thousands of pounds were raised, enough to help Mary’s Meals build a kitchen for a thousand more school kids in Malawi, and a £5,000 donation to Lisa Hague’s 30k Challenge for Marie Curie Challenge for Cancer Care.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along and made the night so special, especially those who stepped forward and helped Mary’s Meals and Lisa’s Challenge.  The night could not have happened without Phil Agnew’s experience, work and charm.  He is a credit to everything good about the Celtic support.

Special thanks to Tom Boyd, John Hughes, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne, who added range to the night at the Q&A session.  Thanks to Stuart Armstrong, who dropped in to spend an hour with us, and share some of his undisguised joy at being a Celtic player.

Archie Macpherson spoke about the world Jock Stein blew apart when he arrived at Celtic 50 years ago this week.  Archie’s range on Scottish football is peerless.  He became a friend and confidant of Jock, and gave us an insight into the extraordinary man.

No St Patrick’s Night would be complete without great music and for that our thanks to Patricia Ferns and Liam McGrandles, and a special mention those who put their shoulder to the wheel on the night, especially Geo from Biglens and the great hospitality staff at Celtic.

I’ve many people to catch up with but I’m planning to sleep for the next several days.  Cup Final apart.

If all weekends were like this weekend………
If all gatherings were like Celtic gatherings……….

  1. Morning all. What a day for a Cup Final.

Come on Bronnie and the Bhoys – deliver the first trophy of the Ronny era.

If my seat is like a bra size, I will have a great view – I’m in row DDD.

What is controversial about criticising an unprofessional footballer? The boozers, with the exception of a few mavericks/geniuses, will never succeed in the modern game like their professional counterparts.

I love the mavericks and their antics but only when they have exceptional skill. Prosinecki for example. Mediocre drunks annoy me.

Ronny’s first Celts final – some thought it would never happen…

It’s easy to see why, given some of the early performances.

Nevertheless, we are poised to win; as ever, the pitch will play a major role in deciding the colour of ribbons tied on the trophy.

We have had mixed fortunes in this competition and I have a theory that historically, the early qualifying period suited our style of play – but semi and final played in grotty pitches (yes I got soaked 82/83 final) reduced our effectiveness and we lost an advantage. Lottery fitba.

Our win ratio in finals is fairly awful, but I have faith In our team and dosh on 3-1 Celts …also a hugely motivated Broony to score anytime.

Anyway, we could just chat politics on cup final day…

The usual suspects dsinterested in fitba methinks!

  4. Sunday duties done it’s now all about the Celtic!!

C’mon you Bhoys in green and white.

    Brilliant moment for you today.

Here’s hoping we get the result and performance to make it an even better one.

  6. 50 years ago, I attended my first Hampden Cup Final – Caesar’s bullet header to beat the Pars 3-2 in 1965 in front of 108k fans – and the beginnings of an unprecedented era of Celtic success.

The surroundings (and myself) may have changed dramatically but the same nervous anticipation is evident. I won’t miss the strangely full beer cans rolling down the gravel and sleeper terracing and the swaying crush of the massed Celtic support but will happily settle for the same score and the same outcome.

I will be heading off to the LCF today – as far as I can remember I haven’t missed one since my first; 7-1 in 1957.

Can’t say its one of my favourite trophies – maybe its been a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ – oh Hampden in the sun etc!

Would love to see us do the 3rd Treble in my lifetime and this is the first (and sometimes most difficult leg) of a great chance to do it this year.

For any faithers taking kids to their first Celtic cup final, I posted this last night…

Halloween 1956. It’s the league cup final replay Celtic v Partick Thistle. My dad tells me I can take the afternoon off school and he will take me to the game. My very first cup final. Saturday had been a 0-0 draw and I listened to the commentary on the wireless but now I was going to Hampden to see the Bhoys in the flesh in a cup final. My old man assured me we would win and it would be our first ever league cup trophy. Was I excited? (is dave king a glib and shameless liar?) It was a 2pm kick off as Hampden had no floodlights in those days.

My wee heart was pounding as we climbed the stairs, wearing my brand new green and silver rosette that the old man bought me near to the turnstiles for the north stand. There was no green brigade in those days but the atmosphere was fantastic. Lots of Celtic scarves and rosettes like mine. It seemed everyone wore bunnets, smoked pipes and drank cairyoots…Anyway, wee Bobby Collins (my hero) scored the first goal followed by a Billy McPhail double, 3-0 final score. My dad lifted me up onto his shoulders and I saw Bobby Evans with the shiny, sparkly cup raised above his head. Even though it looked very small from the other side of the stadium, it left a very big impression on wee me. As the fans roared their delight, my dad shouted above the cheering, ” Look at this son, you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.” And he was right, how could I ever forget it? It was our first ever league cup victory and tomorrow, 59 seasons later, will be our fifteenth success and it will still be sweet…So, for all the young kids watching their first Celtic cup final tomorrow…go to it Celtic!!

Not so chuffed to see Scott Brown starting, although he has an enormous influence on our team.

I am not being ‘holier than thou’, however the state of him, lying on the ground, outside a strip club in the early hours of Thursday morning is mind-boggling.

Never did like Hampden, despite some great triumphs there.

My first games there, I can hardly remember, except wee bits-‘n-pieces of memory: Beating Hearts in a midweek fixture, maybe in 1976, and trouble outside the old North-enclosure entrances, is perhaps my first. Although the mind-picture of Jinky blow-up dolls on a summers day is a recollection to vague to piece together.

The place has always been strange, probably because of it’s vast size. Anyone ever watched a game form the bit that seemed to be added haphazardly to the top of the Celtic end ?

The pitch always seemed much bigger, the players seemed to play on a much-much bigger field and the goals with those old wooden frames always seemed bigger too, with keepers struggling like 10 year olds on the big kid’s pitches. Anyone else remember McCloy’s antics when Danny’s shot was re-directed in the 1980 final ?

Then there was the old press box over the South Stand that seemed to be perched so precariously on the roof.

Hopefully be over at Paradise later today to see the Bhoys parade the trophy.

    Hail Hail.

  17. Hope everyone is having a great weekend … and that it gets better.

Perfect result for me today would be 3 – 0 with a Broony hat trick and then our captain sitting on the centre spot with the trophy. Let’s see that picture on the front page of the rags!

  18. Good Mornin’ troops……..

This is the day – COYBIG.

Full rousing chorus bhoys please from those in attendance.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Fantastic work on Friday, long may it continue.

Historically, the League Cup is not our competition but I’m sure today will be different.

It deserves to be for you ghuys!

  21. embramike,

The 65 Final was by no means my first but it was the first I saw us win. I am already a bundle of nerves. I put it down to losing so often, as I was growing up. The 65 Final will always be one of my greatest memories, as a Celtic supporter.

Good morning CQN from an overcast Nordrhein Westfalen, here’s hoping for a good win today.

Prediction: Hampden pitch will cut up badly as it has had insufficient time to settle and knit together :-( but will be a big improvement on last week’s coo field.

  24. bankiebhoy,

I don’t think it was entirely to deflect from the deid team’s ills. It was also to keep attention away from DU’s thuggery and cheating. Was McGowan’s tackle even mentioned? Apart from us, is anyone aware that a wee guy dived to get them a penalty, taken by a player who should not even have been on the park?

    League Cup finals

14 finals since Hibs 72/73 with my dad when we lost.

The following year watched another defeat from the wee North stand versus Dundee, I think Tommy Gemmell inspired our defeat. Remember my dad taking me away early as there was some fisticuffs nearby.

First final on my own was 76/77 season 2-1 defeat by Dons who brought a big support- we were in the segregated deidco end – what a racket they made ( loudest opposition fans to that point -was not allowed to go to Deidco games)

League Cup a very mixed bag and expecting a tough one today, but we will prevail if we get the ball down on a decent pitch.

On the other hand, The Scottish Cup Final games were all superb and much better memories.

  26. What’s that you say Skippy? The Burnside Hotel pre-match? And the bhoy’s driving? Really? You sure he’s not mixed today up with father’s day?
