CQN community crisis response

293

Brogan, Rogan contacted me over the weekend on behalf of an initiative he, Celticrollercoaster and others have taken to assist some of our community during these terrible times.  This note below appeared in the comments’ section, which many of you will have read.  We are nothing, if not a community of people, bound by values.  If you share those values, please give consideration to this.  From Brogan, Rogan, Trevino, Hogan:

Dear all,

First and foremost I hope this finds you, your family and friends all safe and well in these difficult days and circumstances.

These are unreal times and unchartered waters for all of us, with many of us forced to stay at home in quarantine. This means we are away from our friends and loved ones and that we have lost the normal everyday interactions with friends family and work colleagues that we treat as part of every day life.

Such enforced quarantine and such a dramatic change in lifestyle is uncomfortable and unwanted at the very best.

Some of us are very lucky in that we can remain at home with our spouses/partners and children (or at least some of them) while others are unfortunately facing this crisis as best they can on their own and without support .  No matter what your individual circumstances the situation is difficult.

For many that difficulty is made a million times harder because of basic money worries.

Despite the Government announcing all sorts of grand plans and schemes, the harsh reality is that many people are struggling as a result of simply not being able to work.

Some are employed by small businesses which just cannot afford to carry them while waiting for the Government’s furlough provisions to kick in and apply.

Others are self employed who know they will not be receiving any kind of income or support until June at the earliest.

Still more may be forced to wait in line for subsistence level benefit payments which may, or may not, be granted, while others have simply lost their jobs because a business has folded or because a contract has been cancelled or postponed. Their entire future is uncertain.

These situations cause concern, worry, anxiety and ill health for men, women and children – not forgetting parents.

And of course there is the ongoing Covid19 related health worries and concerns which affect all of us and our families.

It is against that background that myself and others have decided to reach out to you tonight in this somewhat unusual way.

Over the past few days, myself and others have become conscious of some within our community who are struggling – really struggling.

They are struggling on mental and physical health grounds, on a financial basis, and are becoming increasingly desperate as they do not know where to turn for support, advice or help in the immediate, short or long term.

They are in a position where they never thought they would be and in circumstances which they, and we, could never have imagined.

Some of those concerned may be known to you personally, others will be faceless but familiar names on a blog page,  while yet more may be complete and utter strangers but known to someone you know.

Over the years, Celtic Quick News and those who have participated in the blog, have helped oh so many people in times of need.

From bringing Martin home, to raising money for Veronica, Oscar and others or walking with Shay and so much more, the CQN community, and to be honest the followers of other blogs, have always done their bit to help where help was needed.

Now, we want to help some of the helpers so to speak.

We want to do what we can to take away some of the worry and angst that is afflicting those who, in past times, were amongst the best at helping others in times of need.

Unlike previous campaigns, we can’t and wouldn’t provide any names or any details. We will never be able to say who was helped and how – that would not be our place.

What we can say is that no one involved in this process or campaign will benefit to the tune of a single penny and no one will receive assistance or help without a few of us knowing precisely what is taking place and being fully involved in the process.

Further, we don’t want this to be any kind of simple request for funds and help. We want the wider CQN/Celtic community to at least have the chance to get something back and to see some benefit as a result of our efforts.

To that end we are going to raffle/auction a number of items some of which will hold personal or real value and which may be treasured by fellow fans and serious memorabilia collectors alike.

For example I am donating an unworn Celtic strip personally signed and dated by Henrik Larsson in 2004 complete with sales tags as if it came straight out the shop yesterday.

Hopefully it will raise a few quid.

So, if you have anything we can raffle or auction please get in touch.

Once the raffles and auctions are online please participate and buy tickets but only if you can afford to at this time.

If you have anything to donate which you think would help please get in touch.

If you want to simply make a cash donation then please do through the walk with Shay account the details of which are to be found below.

If you know of someone who is struggling and who you think we could help in some way then please let us know.

This is a plea to help some people who are struggling through no fault of their own, who you may have met and shared a pint with and who have been very good to others in the past.

Those same people would never think of looking for help for themselves.

On the other hand, some of us cannot sit idly by and do nothing while others struggle.

We hope you feel the same way.

Those of you who participate in last man standing will know how that money is looked after and accounted for.

The same people will be in charge of these funds and a full accounting for funds will be available but with the beneficiaries remaining anonymous for obvious reasons.

Please look out for the details of raffles/auctions and donation details in the coming days – they will appear via facebook and online hopefully through a number of sources.

Thanks for reading this long message.

Take care, stay safe, God bless and HAIL HAIL.

BRTH/CRC AND OTHERS.

Unless I’m missing something I’d assume that provided they follow basic hygiene procedures asymptomatic care worker carriers of the virus shouldn’t present a huge risk of transmission at work as they will be neither sneezing nor coughing.

The risk they present is more likely to be at home with their families.

Ernie, I’m afraid it’s impossible to do the job while observing the 2m rule, and in many cases, without providing personal care and the associated physical contact.

  4. In my opinion Nicola Sturgeon did not want to sack the Catherine Calderwood for reasons of continuity as in what the did and the reason for it, the Deputy will also be aware of the process and decisions reached, the press conference yesterday with the apology was to test the response of the press and the public, she was savaged it was unsurvivable to then say she would take a step back and not be the face of Government Health advice was another indicator of NS not wanting to sack her, then late last night she leaves her post.

Catherine Calderwood made a huge error of judgment and should have resigned, it shouldnt have been dragged out all of yesterday, she was a Doctor in a psuedo political role why anyone would as a clinician want that role is beyond me, if you want to be a politician be that full time.

I personal hope it doesnt destroy Catherine Calderwood and im glad she has left that job for her sake, and for her families sake, we all make mistakes folks, we expected more of her but we are all human, get back to being a Doctor Catherine and do what you are trained to do .

Just my thoughts on this horrible episode in the midst of a pandemic, I know none of those involved in this situation.

    Greenpinata,

Sorry, those stats are meaningless, no information on the sample sets except they selected some families and grouped them. How big a family? how many families in a “Decile”?

It then claims wealth inequality has fallen, based on figures that omit the timeline under discussion, are you seriously offering this to make a point or have a laugh?

Your link is nothing more than a propaganda sop, full of inconsistencies and contradictions.

At least I took the time to provide information that is relevant to the timeline that affects everyone in the country. You obviously did not even review the info you linked or you would not have offered it as a serious contribution to the discussion.

Its no wonder so many migrants think the UK is the land of ilk and honey when he BBC publish shite like that.

    Nally81,

sorry to read about the loss of your friend, thoughts and prayers with his family and loved ones.

  7. I wonder if Sevco thought they would win the lockdown League to go with winter break league and the pre-season League. However, Peter Lawwell has led them a merry dance and despite their friends in the media trying their best, they are in disarray. The departure of the Lying King and the absence of any Leadership has left a void and an unusual silence. Are they at last having the predicted administration event.

You would think that with Government Loans, wages support and other financial support on offer then Sevco would have been first in the queue. However, radio silence which suggests that some of the Government conditions have not been met like, a sound balance sheet and an up to date Tax account.

Although some of their idiot cheerleaders have had their jotters there are still plenty left but the quality of the output suggests that there are major structural problems at Ibrox.

  8. !!Bada Bing!! on

TBB- Thanks for your informative reply, she said she didn’t know how many tests NHS staff have had,it wasn’t broken down to care home staff etc, she probably spent too much time at the weekend dealing with Calderwood, who should have saved a lot of time and resigned. HH

  9. The Battered Bunnet on

Bada, very specifically, the question you’re referring to – the very first one at the presser today – was about testing of social care staff from the Channel 4 journo. She didn’t now the answer as they’re not able to roll out testing to social care staff specifically (no capacity).

The data for NHS staff and families was reported upfront per my original post – over 5000 tested, and <6% absence rate as of this morning.

Healthcare staff – all over it

    Social Care staff – unknown

‘Ernie, I’m afraid it’s impossible to do the job while observing the 2m rule, and in many cases, without providing personal care and the associated physical contact.

    ###

The 2m rule is to reduce transmission by the droplets and aerosol produced when coughing or sneezing.

Asymptomatic carriers won’t be coughing or sneezing so the risk of transmission via droplets and aerosol is presumably fairly low.

And I’d think that basic handwashing, glove wearing, surface cleaning, non touching of the face and general preventative awareness would greatly reduce the risk of manual transmission in a care work situation.

The risk from asymptomatic carriers is more likely to be in personal contact with family/household members.

  11. Am I right in thinking that the purpose in testing NHS staff is to reduce the number who are off work through self quarantining unnecessarily?

  12. Big Jimmy at 2:23,

Yep, saw the story about the tiger. Presumed it was fake news. Don’t believe anything coming out of Trump’s America. Will go back and read it now. Stay safe. HH

I knew Hugh well and have done so for 20+ years.

both his family and mine stayed in the same street in Mossend.

he was a very learned man who worked in Education then The Scottish Ambulance Service.

The Herald newspaper had several run ins with him and eventually the paper told him that they would no longer print his letters.

All that ban achieved was to encourage him to write even more letters as he did.

His letters were always of Religious or Irish flavour.

Mossend and Holy Family Parish will greatly miss Hugh.

    Rest in Peace Hugh

That is where I know Hugh McLaughlin from Martin, from the letters page of the Herald!

Speaking of which, Celtic published an apology from the that paper today. It related to an article published a few days back on the club paying staff through one of the government schemes supporting employees. Thing is it was written by Kevin McKenna, a Celtic supporting journalist, but was highly critical of the club’s position. The Herald’s apology: “All staff on the Government’s job retention scheme are having their salaries paid in full by Celtic” is on the club website today. Does anyone know whether that means that no Celtic staff are part of the scheme or not?

Just received from a pal who is searching for meaning in his life.

Heard a Doctor on TV saying in this time of Coronavirus and staying at home we should focus on inner peace.

To achieve this state of calm, we should always ensure that tasks are completed. Knowing that nothing is outstanding will encourage serenity.

So I looked through my house to find things I’d started and then left in the air.

Kevin McKenna is one of the Celtic supporting journalists who seem to only ever print articles critical of Celtic at the same time claiming to be a fan.

it wont be the first time he has been wrong. Maybe, i’m being stupid, but, I’ve never actually seen an article from Kevin supporting the club

  18. BIGBHOY

Can you name a Celtic ‘supporting’ journalist who consistently writes in the affirmative about

    Celtic?

    ………….. Take your time

  19. bigbhoy

Dont think that’s fair. Though the article in question certainly was critical, it was from the perspective of a a bonefide Celtic supporter, you will find similar on here. What I am not clear about is Celtic’s position now re the government’s job retention scheme, in part due to the wording of the Herald’s apology.

I am aware that BBC employees are veted by MI5, but for goodness sake you cannot totally trash their facts and figures.

In every debate on here you always have the superior information, no matter the subject. Researched no doubt from the world wide web.

Your basic arguement was that nobody on here is better off now compared to 2006.

For the reasons I stated earlier, that is plainly incorrect and even you must recognise that.

Not getting at you and you’re not the first today to conflate two pieces of writing.

Kevin McKenna didn’t write the Herald article. He used it as one of the hooks in his separate opinion rant.

I agree with you he’s another tortured Tim whose club never lives up to his own impeccable standards.

My understanding is that Celtic will take the 80% from government and pay the further themselves therefore no employees loose anything

Or Celtic pay full salary and claim but 80% furlough from UK government which is basically the same thing
