CQN Magazine, Fit and Proper issue, out now!

323

With an eye on the interesting weeks and months that lie ahead, this month’s issue of CQN Magazine is titled Fit and Proper, as we investigate some of the goings-on in the game.  To give these times some perspective, we take you back to 1994, when our own club was on the verge of collapse.  It’s all there, including video of the legendary “Cambuslang is a reality”!

Celtic was rescued and rebuilt by the collective action of thousands of ordinary supporters, the active planning of a small number and the icy focus of Fergus McCann.  Fergus had his critics, and we recall some of the conflict here, but as Shakespeare said, “Cometh the hour, cometh the man”.  He was unquestionably the right man to relieve the old board of their duties.

This was an important time in our history so we’ll take any excuse to relive, recall and read over those times. Nor do we make any excuse for our alert focus on events elsewhere.

The story of other parts of Scottish football is important to us as we will have a roll in its future.  Celtic fans must be aware of the issues and be ready to voice their opinions should an opportunity come for clubs, the SPL or SFA to made a decision on how to pick up the pieces after a serious financial crisis at one or more clubs.  We cannot be asleep when the hour arrives.

There is tons more of the usual fare in the magazine, including analysis of our January signings, fans’ stories, a look back at our 65-year-old Polish heritage and some of the reasons why there may be a million football clubs in the world, but there’s only one Celtic.

Hope you enjoy it.  Thanks to everyone who has contributed or worked on it.

Tuesday on Celtic TV: Sami answers your Twitter questions

By: Gregor Kyle on 07 Feb, 2012 17:07

AFTER back-to-back cup ties, the players return to league business tomorrow night and following his outstanding performance on Saturday, one player is particularly looking forward to the trip to Tynecastle.

Georgios Samaras was one of the key players in the weekend’s win over Caley Thistle, scoring with a screamer from the edge of the penalty box and earning praise from his manager.

But the big striker is not one for dwelling on the victories and as he looked ahead to tomorrow’s match in an exclusive interview on tonight’s Huddle Online, he explained why he has been limbering up for one of the toughest games of the season.

“We will have to be at our best,” said Samaras in tonight’s interview on Celtic TV. “Away games are always difficult, but games against Hearts are very tough. This might not be a night when we can play great football, but there are games like that in the SPL.

“You have to be ready for a battle and it will be physical. But I think we have learned an important lesson this season and we will be ready, physically and mentally, to go and win this game.”

In tonight’s interview, Sami also answers some of the questions that we have received from Celtic TV viewers through Celtic TV presenter, Gregor Kyle’s Twitter feed: @gkOnTheHuddle

As you’d expect, there were a few interesting questions, one coming from Daniel McKeown, who asked, on behalf of his girlfriend, why he doesn’t pull his hair back in matches.

“I just don’t like it and ponytails are for girls!” said Sami with a laugh. “That’s my answer and I hope your girlfriend is going to stop asking you now!”

He was also typically honest when asked why he doesn’t get his hair cut: “I am ugly now, but I know I am going to be a lot uglier with short hair! That’s my style and it will always be like that – until my hair falls out!”

You can hear Sami’s other answers and get all the news ahead of the Hearts game on our pre-match Huddle Online. Login to http://www.celticfc.tv to find out how to subscribe.

They can’t change entry criteria mid-season. If Ross County’s ground qualifies for the existing criteria on the specified date and they win the league then they qualify.

i know that you are not allowed to sell alcohol in the stadium, however, i think the council/ SPL would have difficulty saying that it is not permitted outwith the stadium. this i am sure would give celtic the opportunity to operate. celtic could, for example, let the bar out to for bug bucks to an independent company if there was an issue, are they allowed to own the premises but not the lease?, we just need to remember to pay our taxes.

p.s once the rangers are dead, will the concerns about selling alcohol in stadiums remain?

and why are football fans treated like hooligans when rurby fans can buy alcohol in stadiums, maybe we should be asking about his discriminatory practice, in the SNP social justice model.

I worked with the architects who did a lot of the work at Celtic Park and there was indeed plans for further expansion such as the hotel you were talking about. Architects were The Miller Partnership and they have now merged with a company called Holmes.

I had a great wee tour of the stadium to take photos for the company’s website. Boardroom, No7, changing rooms etc… met Paul Lambert (chatting up the lovely wee receptionist i might add).

I hope that ALL at Celtic keep moving steadily onwards and upwards. No boom and bust at whatever cost.

it seems that the commonwealth games and regeneration around celtic park will if our club takes the right steps act as a major step towards forward. hotels are like car showrooms better to have several closely together than one on its own

  15. Good article in CQN mag on Fergus. It is only fit and proper he is fondly remembered. I know it was a straight comparison between two men but where Whyte appears to be entirely on his own it should be noted the Fergus received fantastic financial support from Dermot Desmond.

Without the Irishman’s input we would not be anywhere near where we are today.

Never forget Fergus vision but I would always put Desmonds contribution to the Club alongside Fergus’ achievements, it wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

    Totally agree.

Fergus came to Celtic with a business plan.He was here to make a few quid from his investment, and he managed to do that,as well as building the stadium, and clearing the debt.Nobody can begrudge him his days in the sun.He did a job,and he did it well.

Dermot is a somewhat different animal.I think that, what with his vast personal wealth,he initially seen Celtic FC as a hobby. He did invest heavily in the club, and perhaps maybe,(although,i very much doubt it)he would have sold his shares had the club gained admission to English football. That was never going to happen.Dermot is a shrewd businessman, and he isn’t the type to speculate wildly, when the odds are stacked heavily against such an outcome.

After Fergus set sail back to Canada, the rot was beginning to set in again. The hun were spending big,and for all the noble efforts of Fergus, and those humble custodians whom took his place – Success on the park was rare, trophies were few and far between. And let us be honest here, the hun were on the march again. After all was said and done – we had one league title to show, for all the monumental efforts,on and off the park.

This is when Dermot Desmond stepped into the breach. This is when Dermot put a stop to the hun. This is when Desmond stated that enough was enough. What did Desmond do?He appointed Martin O’Neill, and invested many millions into the football team.

Now,the club could not sustain this.Transfers and wages paid has taken their toll. After Seville, the club debt stood at around £18million.Dermot stepped in once again, and declared that this level of debt, and spending could not go on.His words were:”I refuse to let this club do down the road that Rangers are going gown.”

This is my point – Dermot Desmond has had tounder-write at least three share issues, during his time at our club, just to keep Celtic FC on the straight and narrow.

Dermot Desmond has pumped at least £50million of his own personal fortune into the Celtic Football Club, with little,or no return.Pound for pound,no idividual has ever invested more money into our great club.

Tonight,I shall raise a glass to both those gentlemen – Fergus and Dermot. And I thank them sincerely for all the good that they have done for the Celtic Football Club.

For it is easy to be critical, and un-grateful.

The Donut invested in Celtic because he believed the Old Firm (and he is an Old Firm believer whether you like it or not) had a future in the EPL with the donut as the Celtic helmsman and benefactor of the most magnificent Celtic. I believed and still do as did the donut that celtic would have a far richer future than hunnery in the EPL. However, its all about money and the Lawwell orchestrated SPL Celtic downsizing is a result of no EPL during and since MON left when he figured it out. Not sure donut is as gleeful as most of Timmery with the hopeful demise of brer hun.

No comparison to Fergus in my opinion. Where was the great Celtic supporter when Fergus was struggling?

Not a time for this kind of argument I hear many of you say.

Well then dont sneak in this donut pish in these historic times. Its got nothing to do with him.

Death to a history of bigotry, anti sectarian policies and rioting across UK and Europe

    Death to thuggish agricultural football

Death to the cover up of institutionalized bias

Death to the ingrained prejudice prevalent in our press and parliament

In July 2010 I visited Cahersiveen. In the middle of the town in the back of a car park

is the most amazing little ruin of a catholic church. A few plaques instruct visitors

on its significance as its obviously fallen into disrepair and looks like the hang out of

local youths where they binge drink and throw away their beer cans. It contains a small cemeterywhere amongst others is buried Hugh O’Flaherty.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_O%27Flaherty

If you walk down past the chapel you will see a collection of maybe 20 council houses with an amazing statue of Virgin Mary right in the middle of the street. In contrast to the old chapel its in good nick. Stunning and colourful. The interesting fact for me was the Gregory Peck plaque. He visited this nondescript out of the way ruin in 1968 and again in 2000 that I just happened to stumble into looking for parking.
