CQN memorial, anti-Moneyball, FAC

573

CQNers are a new type of community.  We mostly, though not always, share interests but we are anchored in commons values.  The achievements of the community are incredible.  We’ve made friends, some of whom are no longer with us and who shared their darkest hours on these pages, while others were lost in an instant.

Those lost friends now have a memorial stone outside Celtic Park, a credit to their memory.  Thanks to all who contributed.

You and I have been talking Moneyball for six years.  We’ve been convinced of the merits since then, most of the world is now, so it’s gratifying to know a manager would rather lose his job than succumb to the new orthodoxy.  Very brave of Mark Warburton, he has the makings of an ideal Newco manager.

Last week I wrote that I expected Newco to appoint Stuart McCall as permanent manager.  He was a reliable choice, had taken Motherwell to two consecutive second place SPL finishes, knew the task, had spent years scrapping around for free transfers and, let’s face it, is a ‘Real Rangers Man’.  I would not have looked past him.

Warburton managed Brentford for two years, winning promotion in the first and taking them to the play-off semi-finals in April, but Brentford is the story of owner, Matthew Benham, who has invested close to £50m in the club.  Warburton is fortunate to find two consecutive owners intent on spending £50m living the dream…….  you do have the money for him, Dave, don’t you?

Fans Against Criminalisation issued this statement yesterday:

“Our view is that from the outset, despite the claims from the then First Minister, Alex Salmond, that he ‘wished to build consensus’ the only support that the government has managed to attract for the Act is that of the Police Service of Scotland and the only consensus that is being built is that of the opposition to this dreadful, unworkable and pernicious legislation.

Their claim of public support for the Act is based on figures which show that people want action on sectarianism and not specifically that they support this Act.  They also conveniently ignore the fact that the overwhelming majority of sectarian offences (ie those with religious aggravation) do not take place in football grounds [http://www.gov.scot/resource/0042/00424865.pdf].  In addition, many of the incidents for which people have been charged under the Act are unrelated to sectarianism.

We deplore:

•             The action of the Scottish Government in giving off-the-record press briefings alleging that the Act will stay in place. This undermines the integrity of the Review process and the role of Parliament and its members.

•             The use of the statistics from a highly skewed YouGov poll commissioned by the government to mislead the public.

•             The continued reference by the Government to the Stirling research as being the ‘Review’ which the legislation requires them to have is an attempt to prevent the full and transparent examination of the Act which the public in general, and football fans in particular, expect and are entitled to.  These claims are made despite a statement issued by the University of Stirling on Friday (12/6/15) afternoon that the work produced by their team is not ‘the review’ and their work cannot be interpreted as ‘an endorsement of the Act’.

We note:

•             The conviction rate for this Act over the whole period of its existence is standing at 22%. This compares with a conviction rate for rape (itself notoriously low)  in 2013-14 of 41%

•             The scale of the resource devoted to enforcing this Act (including a specialised unit of the police service) which necessarily diverts finances and manpower from the detection and prosecution of more serious offenders.

We pledge:

•             To continue to oppose this legislation by all peaceful means until it is repealed.

We call on the Government to listen to football fans; to listen to those whose lives have been drastically affected by a piece of legislation which is a stain on the justice system of Scotland.”

We have the most right-wing left-wing government in history.

Warburton’s CV is indeed strange – but he’s not a balloon and comes across as a very decent guy respectful of other clubs, his own players etc.

Reminds me a wee bit of Ronny in some ways.

Sevco realise that they need to build from the bottom up – probably reached that conclusion 4 years too late – but I suspect that’s the current mindset.

He is indeed a risk for Sevco – and certainly not to be “feared” by us – but possibly a step in the right direction for a fledgling club with no assets, no team and no scouting network.

He does try and play football though – so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

at Brentford he worked within a tight budget also, the squad is worth a few million at best, at Sevco it will be a similar budget or less. Freebies, youth or loans, I cannot see a marquee signing as the term goes.

a quality player wouldnt go there, not with all the shite of their recent past.

Put it this way, he’s had an unorthodox career path.

He’s not a younger ex-player making his way in management.

He’s not an experienced Assistant working his way up.

He’s not one of the ‘Guru’ set, the Mourinho/AVB type guys who’ve sat at their Masters’ feet and soaked up the knowledge for years.

He’s basically the next generation Andy Roxburgh. That’s about as close as I can get it.

Seems to be smart enough guy who’s turned his hand to football management later, after a career elsewhere and a long stint coaching the kids.

Unusual. No baggage. Nothing to live up to.

When asked why he joined Rangers, Warburton said “to win trophies and put Alloa in their place”….

Cue hun frenzy – “same old Alloa, always cheating”

  5. Warburton, seems not too bad a guy.Humoungous task ahead of him.Dont know if he has grasped that,or maybe he just wants a salary.

  6. From newsnow Celtic.

THE inaugural Pacific Soccer Coaching Conference took place in Vancouver, Canada last week and one of the headline presenters was our very own Soccer Academy Manager, Willie McNab who was there to spread the word about Celtic across the Atlantic.

UEFA A-license holder, Willie, is fast becoming a regular on the coaching conference circuit having delivered at the recent NSCAA convention in Philadelphia where he presented at the event attended by over 10,000 other coaches, all eager to learn more about our club and how we develop players from our Academy to be of Champions League quality.

In Vancouver it was a more intimate event, as the Celtic Soccer Academy Manager delivered on-field practical sessions based on playing the ‘Celtic Way’ as well as participating in panel discussions with delegate coaches. He is pictured here with Poco United’s Under-15s who assisted Willie in demonstrating a sample of his coaching sessions.

Over 200 coaches attended from throughout Canada and the United States and all were left with a distinctly positive view of Celtic and our philosophy on how football should be played.

Willie was joined by Under-17 Belgium National Coach, Bob Browaeys, Technical Advisor to FIFA, Dick Bate and Head of Fulham’s Academy, Huw Jenning, who all presented to the delegates.

Willie also took the opportunity to present to clubs about our International Partner Club programme which now boasts over 50 clubs throughout the world across 16 different countries.

Local side, Micro FC from Vancouver, will be holding a week-long Celtic Soccer Camp from 13-17 July which will be delivered by four of our Soccer Academy coaches who will host sessions for over 100 players as well as providing coach education sessions for coaching staff at the club.

If you would like to find out how to become a partner club please contact our Soccer Academy Manager, Willie McNab at wmcnab@celticfc.co.uk or on +44 (0) 141 551 4335.

The club would like to extend its thanks to Vancouver United for the invitation to be part of the well-organised event and to send our best wishes for future events

  8. If Hibs continue their 2015 form into the new season – and therefore don’t have a bad start like last season – it will take a lot to stop them from doing a Hearts and romping the league

Can’t see Sevco starting the season well if Warbuton tries to get a footballing game going with players of limited ability

3 years in the championship? With the only real revenue season ticket money? Good luck.

There is some talk on twitter about that poster on RSL,

Not being like the usual “Gullibillies” some think that he may be an Anti King plant even “Jack always gets paid” :)))))

I will give him the benefit of the doubt as the law of averages say that one of them is eventually going to see the shysters have no clothes on.

Gullibility- is a failure of social intelligence in which a person is easily tricked or manipulated into an ill-advised course of action. It is closely related to credulity, which is the tendency to believe unlikely propositions that are unsupported by evidence.

  11. A question never answered !!!!!

We know why the SNP hard-core, historically around 500k, vote for them.

They want independence at ANY cost, no matter what the ramifications. That’s fine, we can take that, dyed in wool Nationalism.

Why did the million or so ‘converts’ vote for them – was there any positive reason/proposal/policy that won the day?

Will anyone of these converts answer?

Can we leave the hatred and negative comments about Labour and give ONE positive SNP reason?

Here’s a step for a hint for those converts who inhabit this forum –

Was it because you hate the Rangers and as long as you stick it to them, then it matters little if the country, jobs , benefits and pensions go down the drain in a bankrupt country.

Was it because you believe that the Irish Republican cause would be boosted by an independent Scotland and so hasten the unification of Ireland?

Surely you could not have voted SNP, a party who have never given the poor and working class ANYTHING, and not voted Labour, the ONLY party EVER to do anything, in fact, hundreds of things, for the poor and working class.

So come on, name one thing that Independence, or, the SNP can give you – what have they ACTUALLY promised you?

Failing to win ‘just’ under half his games in charge?

His win percentage is worse than the two gardeners and the mullet….

  25. Great to hear of the progress we are making in places like Vancouver. This is the future of our club there and in 50 other partnerships across the world.

Our global band will grow through personal contact not by the transient coverage of Sky.

Meanwhile the other side of town have a new club have their fourth manager in three years.

Is that a record for a new club.

They have no Academy and few contracted players.
