Craft needed to open defences, over to you, Brendan

124

15 games into the campaign and a rainy night in Perth is the setting for our next ‘biggest game of the season.’  Two points below us in the league, St Johnstone were on a decent run of form before capitulating at Ibrox on Sunday – only their second loss in 11 outings.

You know what to expect from them.  Tommy Wright will have watched Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Hamilton defend their penalty box and keep it tight.  He will play for penalties but hope to get men forward through a set piece whenever possible.

Saturday’s opponents, Aberdeen, endured extra time at Easter Road last night.  They have an extra day’s rest over Celtic, but advantage will be nullified if Celtic can get the job done in 90 minutes tonight.  As such, I would expect our strongest team to start the game, but what that is, is open to debate.  We need craft to open packed defences.

Over to you, Brendan.  Win tonight and it’s semi-final time at Hampden.

Really appreciate all the help for the Foundation ahead of the Great Scottish Run on Sunday.  It puts fuel in the tank like nothing else.  Thanks to everyone who has contributed, the link is here if you would like to join in.

  1. Almore … I read that story in in the news last night. I already liked JH, but he grew considerably in my estimation after reading that story.

Think Johnny’s intervention actually took place in Lennoxtown/Campsie, possibly after Celtic training there.

  3. I posted this story the other night, but most of you may have missed it, as you would have been asleep at the time. It is an article about Dybala of Juventus. I just thought it was Bbeautifully written (almost poetic), so I thought some on here (I actually thought of Matt) might enjoy reading it. So, thought I would post it.

“Life does not give anything. If anything, sometimes and not at all, it can only offer great opportunities. Those who can grasp the meaning of that precious gift transform the “seed” into a tree rich in good fruits for themselves and for others. Then there are those who, for different reasons, do not realize the potential luck. The fleeting moment is dissolved and destiny, like Paganini, does not repeat.

There is a distinct feeling that the second case belongs to the story that has so far linked Paulo Dybala to Juventus. A relationship born under the sign of a fairy tale marriage which seems to be ending, as it often happens for certain unions, for incompatibility of character and which presages a fatal and inevitable divorce.

This would be a rather painful event especially for the Juventus executives who, with excellent reasons, had elected the young Argentine talent as the man of providence and the player who guaranteed pure fun as well as prestigious substance.

The criticism had superimposed the figure of Dybala to that of the immense and never forgotten Omar Sivori. Juventus had given him the number 10 shirt which is reserved for special players. The idyll seemed perfect. Even in Frosinone, as it has been for some time, we saw that “number 10” wandering around the field with openness and abulia as if the game was an accidental fact for him, with his mind being elsewhere.

The sentence of Allegri to comment on the Argentine was emblematic and meaningful: “The best quality of Dybala is running”. So not the imagination, creativity, genius. Heavy criticism for a champion who is not a marathon runner and who is asked to create more than just run.

The problem of Dybala and his painful black and white eclipse is all and only inside the mind and perhaps even the sole of the player who arrived at a lion club like Juve, not without good reasons, but to be able to become the “Lion King” of the Juventus savannah.

Then Ronaldo arrived with all his experience and appeal as a leader. In Dybala, evidently at the unconscious level, the spring is triggered, not of jealousy (it would be crazy and presumptuous), but of awareness with respect to a fatal “diminution” to have to endure.

And Dybala’s shoulders are not so wide and solid to hold that weight. That’s why, with a bitter feeling, the Argentine champion has already left Juventus in his head. Fortunately for the Bianconeri, Bernardeschi has stepped up behind him.

  7. I’ve just spent the last hour having a wee look at Stevie Gs record to date to see if it is living up to the hype. Surprisingly, despite the constant insistence of Alex Rae and Kris Boyd, it may not be the case that Sevco ” huv goat the momentum”.

We’ve both played 16 competitive games so far. 7 domestic and 9 European.

We’ve both won all 3 home SPFL games and failed to win either of our 3 away games. We’ve both won our LC tie.

Sevco have won 4 of their 9 EL ties drawing the other 5. This means that Gerrard has won 8 of his 16 games – 50%. This doesn’t quite live up to the billing that they’re getting that they are sweeping all before them and are the team in the ascendancy.

Meanwhile, across the city, crisis club Celtic, flitting from one disaster to another have won 5 of their 9 European ties (with 8 of them in the premier tournament) drawing 3 and losing 1.

This means that Brendan has won 9 of his 16 games – one more than Sevco.

So, it would appear that reports of our demise are being greatly exaggerated by SMSM. Hey, who knows, maybe we’ll manage to mount a reasonable defence of our trophies after all?

  8. We dominate in a lot of games and inevitably get a fair amount of corners. These, in many cases, just seem to result in a loss of possession or even lead to an attack by the opposition. I recall that in Martin O’Neill’s day, corners often led to goals. So, if we could only work on our corners and make them more of a threat I’m sure we’d bang a few more into the net.

Also, throw-ins – just take the things quicker before the opposition marks up. It’s all so simple, I should really be a coach! :-)

  9. Thanks for further info re Jonny Hayes. Only saw a screen shot so couldn’t get further info. Surprised it hadn’t been mentioned here.

  13. Today’s starting line up ……

Bain; Lustig, Boyata, Ajer, Tierney; Forrest, Brown, Ntcham, McGregor; Edouard, Griffiths.

Subs: Gordon, Hendry, Mulumbu, Morgan, Rogic, Christie, Sinclair

  14. Didn’t expect that line up, with two up front. I feel that leaves us vulnerable in midfield. However, Brendan knows far better than me. Obviously, I hope I’m wrong.

  15. Happy with that team although I thought that Mulumbu might have kept Ntcham on the bench. Nevertheless, if we do fail tonight I won’t be coming on here with the benefit of hindsight. That team is a good team. And hopefully we win it in 90 minutes.
