Creating and taking chances

1634

I watched Hull batter Leicester City on TV last night without putting the ball in the net.  The sheer volume and quality of chances entitled Hull fans to some consolation in the valid football adage, ‘these days happen’.  Those absent from Celtic Park on Saturday are likely to assume we similarly battered Ross County, but they would be wrong.  County defended throughout but were never under anything close to intense pressure.

This is one of the right times of the season to have a performance like that, they are of little use in the first week in February, when the transfer window is closed.  Clues abound as to where we need to strengthen, most pointing to the forward line.  John Guidetti’s drop in form over the last month has dropped like a stone, but he’s still comfortably holding onto the striker position.  Neither Stokes, Griffiths nor Scepovic are putting pressure on a young off-form player.

There is also the playmaker position, which appears to be on the bench.  Kris Commons has been dropped before in his Celtic career, often for important games in Europe, where more industrious, but less talented, players were chosen.  I spent most of Saturday’s game waiting on Kris coming on, but if his general level of fitness counts against him for a starting position, his lack of 90 minute outings since his injury earlier in the season means that his late-game cameos look even less industrious.

As I’ve been saying since July, we only have one playmaker and if he’s not playing or off form, we’ll struggle.  With a match-fit Commons on from the start yesterday, we would have won comfortably.  I’m happy to accept we need a playmaker who’ll cover 15k in 90 minutes, so sign one, but if we’re going to let Commons go, or wither on the bench, sign two, before we end up dependent on one man again.

The way I see it, we lost one and drew one. BIG DEAL. We had 7 straight wins before that. Any team in the country would be happy with that. I’m not attending on Ne’erday, but I would be gobsmacked if the result was anything less than a win for us. COYBIG. The rest of you, get a life or just get wrecked. :-)))))

Johansen might be a exemplar in terms of his athleticism but certainly not in terms of his passing or composure in front of goal. Commons is superior in both these respects. Johansen`s short range passing is atrocious. The amount of times he fails to complete passes when players are only a matter of yards away from him is unbelievable for a professional footballer and is something which resulted in Dundee Utd`s first goal last week.

Johansen occasionally scores great goals but misses a lot of straightforward one on ones too, often overrunning the ball or flopping down in the box.

Frankly if we have gifted youth players I`d be advising them to watch Johansen if they want a move to Shettleston Harriers and to watch Commons if they want to learn how to create and execute attacks with a football.

On another subject, what the blazes is going on with the pitch at the moment, thot it was bad at the last home game but was in a shocking state on Saturday.

I know it had to be relaid due to the Commonwealth games but after watching the footage on the fiscal web site about how they sent ground staff to pick the very best grass available, what has gone wrong?

    ____________

I posted last night that my bhoy who was sitting in 109, said that side of the pitch was a mess, we know that’s where the players do the warm up, but according to young sips the pitch was dire beforehand.

As you say, maybe it’s not been laid right.

I think, long term, he’ll do a job for us. My point though is that I don’t think he’s any more mobile or quicker than KC.

  14. sipsini,

They are Celtic fans, but win lose,or draw the usual suspects are on slaughtering the manager. It has now become totally unacceptable for Celtic to lose or draw. The sack the manager mob are on right away.Acting like huns who used to think they had a divine right to win.A player who plays well for a few games, then not as well, becomes a dud.Celtic Park, apart from the GB has now become a nightmare for the players. The mob just sitting waiting to spout abuse,to this week/months whipping boy.

If they want to keep coming on and venting their anger at RD,or whatever player,I will keep on giving it back out to them.

    I am in no clique.

  15. DBBIA compliments of the season to you and yours – from what I saw of Mo he probably would miss the poles!

  16. Sipsini

I thot the pitch looked bad even low down from section 138, but when I seen it in the 4 mins or so on sport scene last night, it was really bad all over, doesn’t help our play at all and may be good that 7of the next 8 games are away and give them time to get it sorted

For what it’s worth I’ve never bought the KC doesn’t fit the RD system, stuff.

When he began to be left out, his form dipped, and now he’s not getting a run at it, but there are players more mobile than others in every system.

A club on its knees: Kenny Miller suffers at Easter Road

ANOTHER horrible Ibrox annus. Yes, Rangers have been blighted by a long list of them in recent times but, even so, 2014 will go down as a year of unrelenting trauma which has brought this basket case back to the brink.

The New Year is not yet upon us but already Rangers are running out of time.

There are just days now for the current regime to extricate itself from an impending insolvency because, having loaned £3million from Mike Ashley just to limp into the festivities, they are left with little more than pockets full of spare change.

And so 2015 will begin in almost exactly the same way as 2014, with a bunch of bedraggled directors

scrambling around at the top of the old staircase desperately attempting to secure lifesaving hand-outs.

Only the names and the faces change but the crisis which these men have bestowed upon this club remains constant, as does the shadow it casts across the landscape of the Scottish game.

Granted, it might not have reached as far north as Inverness where yesterday Aberdeen’s red army rolled into town to battle it out for second place in the SPFL top flight.

And yes, the good people of Dundee are enjoying their football more this season than they have done in a long time.

With Hearts back in such rejuvenated form that they took 7500 fans to Livingston with them on Saturday and Hibs are also taking impressive shape under Alan Stubbs. There are undoubted green shoots.

In fact, it could be that the worst of the nuclear winter is over. That Scottish football is adjusting and getting used to life without a relevant Rangers.

Ironically, it is Celtic who are pining the most, even though they are the one club in the country with the financial muscle to withstand just about any kind of unilateral collapse.

Life without a significant other has taken its toll on the champions, who continue to dominate the domestic scene while doing little more than going through the motions.

Only in such an environment of apathy would professor Ronny Deila be able to continue his experimental approach to the science of winning football matches.

In more normal circumstances, had the Norwegian returned from the lab with a 0-0 draw at home to Ross County he would have been feeling more than just the heat coming off his bunsen burner.

It is precisely because Delia is operating in a vacuum, devoid of the intensity created by ferocious competition, that he will continue to make unnecessarily hard work of winning this title before shouting ‘Eureka’ when the job is done.

But over time Celtic may nurture new rivalries, especially if the North East revival should build up a head of steam.

And that’s probably just as well as the next few weeks seem set to determine if Rangers are ever to become recognisable again or if indeed they are locked into this downward spiral of perpetual self harming for good. Or at least until they reach an inevitable end.

Right now it would seem like a mercy killing if this Rangers, in its current form, was to be released from its misery. It’s as if they exist now only to humiliate themselves.

It was four years ago that Craig Whyte began battering on the doors of the boardroom and ever since his pointy buckled shoes first stepped across the threshold, the place has become a sanctuary for scoundrels.

Between them these people have unleashed a chaos like no other. A toxic slurry of administration, liquidation, groping Yorkshire hands, secret videos, missing millions, police probes, arrests and now impending court cases.

Is it any wonder that for many Rangers fans the actual football has long since become an irrelevance?

But there are thousands more who continue to focus only on what they see on the pitch. And on Saturday, as Kenny McDowall began his duties as caretaker manager with a 4-0 thrashing at Hibs, they too hit rock bottom. Finally, perhaps for the first time, all sections of this club’s fractured support are united in utter dismay and embarrassment at what their club has become.

And as Rangers stagger forward into another year they are also entering the eye of a perfect and potentially devastating storm. The numbers are dropping away to such an extent that a business which was already broken and suffering

unsustainable losses, is exposed like never before. In its current state, it may even be irretrievable.

The next few weeks will determine the fate of this club. An offer for £6.5m worth of funding has been tabled by three wealthy Rangers fans, Douglas Park, George Letham and George Taylor, and proof of funding has also been provided.

But although this appears to offer an easy solution, it is far from a done deal. First, it will require the approval of a board which, up until now, has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep such well-meaning investors at arm’s length in order to cling on to control.

Also, this cash offer may well be conditional not just on two seats on the board but also upon Park, Letham and Taylor being allowed to look under the bonnet of Rangers and examine the actual depth of the current

    financial crisis.

If so, it is entirely possible that any one of this trio may be sufficiently horrified as to be scared into having some serious second thoughts.

    Poll loading …

Then there is the unpredictably enigmatic Ashley. Just where exactly does he stand in all of this, after bulldozing his way into control of the boardroom, where his man Derek Llambias now sits at the head of the table as CEO?

Is the Newcastle United owner prepared to roll over and obey the commands of the SFA who have taken an aggressive stance against his attempted power grab? Or is he about to turn his tanks on Hampden and take what he wants in any case,

underwriting a share issue and increasing his stake to 29.9 per cent?

His total lack of feeling for Rangers coupled with his contempt for governing blazers may be such that he is prepared to call their bluff where threats of revoking the club’s licence to play football is concerned.

Ashley may well believe they simply would not dare but this would be the ultimate high-risk strategy and, given the millions he makes from selling Rangers merchandise, it might prove too big a gamble to take. Even for a man with the deepest of pockets.

But, despite his wealth, there seems little logic in Ashley continuing to throw millions of pounds of loans into an ever-widening black hole just in order to keep Rangers breathing while its customers revolt against him. It may be a great deal easier to have the club tipped back into administration, one which he would be able to control as the club’s major creditor.

Either way the SFA have drawn a line in the sand where Ashley is concerned. They have seen proof of funds from Park, Letham and Taylor and are satisfied that Ashley is not, as the Rangers board describe him, the only show in town.

If Rangers chose to proceed with Ashley then the SFA’s Judicial Panel will step in and thousands upon thousands will be drained from the game’s coffers and given over to lawyers all in the name of sorting out yet another Rangers-made mess.

New Year, same old story. But, one way or the other, January is likely to bring a defining moment to this exhausting narrative.

Does Guidetti look any quicker or more mobile?

    =================================================

I agree with both those observations, after attending our game I made a point of watching St Johnstone,Aberdeen, and the Hibs games.

Pains me to say this, but we are not much better than any of these teams,in that although they have a lot of less talented ( or well paid ) players than us,our advantages are nullified by the way we are deployed.

Guidetti is NOT as quick or hard as Tony Watt ( what a waste ) and does not look fit which is contrary to this high pressing philosophy as is Biton.

To think we could have had Russell and McKay-Steven for approx £2M had we sold Hooper and Forrest whilst the public were confused as to their real merit, now alas confirmed, and in the case of Forrest a constant disruption to a settled team with the Messiah arriving every 6 weeks.

Although Sevco are a bad lot, when our game with them arrives,it will be no holds barred, the return of a mans game, and more non recoverable honest mistakes.

One man can make a difference, particularly if he controls the game and acts with impunity.

After this amount of time I do not think this is Ronnies forte, better suited to the USA where strategy and analysis paralysis is accepted.

I was willing to have a period of settling despite poor results/performances but we are playing with little direction or emotion.

  21. Just in from a hard day at the coal face and had a look back on the blog and it seems we all have to conform and are not allow to have our own opinions on our current form.

  23. So Keith Jackson, who tells us all that the hun are in a deplorable state, may not even survive, then tells us that we are missing”A ferocious challenge”from them.

    What size gardening gloves Keith?.

  24. My friends in Celtic,

I believe RD & JC should get at least to the end of the season before judgement is passed. I am trying to buy into their philosophy but it is difficult.

Saturday was dire there is no other way of putting it. We will not persuade the missing thousands to return watching that “entertainment”. That in itself is a great pity as the outside, facilities and surroundings at CP is the best I have ever seen. The whole match day experience has the potential to be so much better.

Surely even RD must see that we should possibly adapt our system to accommodate a slower but intelligent footballer ( not athlete ) to give us the creativeness and goals that we are finding so hard to produce at this time.

This change in direction need not derail RD’s long term plan.

    HH.

  27. turkeybhoy,

As with most, all we want is a team to watch and enjoy the football played by our team on the park.

We all know by hook or by crook the new format will get a lift up, I just want us in a position to humiliate and dominate thems.

I know some on here think that their gone…believe me, February will give us a taste of what’s to come.

We need to be in a position to keep thems in check, just like they tried and failed todo with us….long live the bunnet.

  28. Not wanting to start an argument or anything – not till the weekend anyway but all this talk of formations is maybe getting away from the fact that the players, not just ours aren’t really up to the basics the passing is often at waist height ,the second touch is a tackle a lot of the time and how many of them are two footed?

How many crosses get passed the first man? Regardless of who crosses the ball , the fact there probably is no one in the box apart from a corner or free kick is irrelevant

Is it me or will this window be underwhelming with our ronaldo saying it’s more important to keep players instead of getting new ones

As ever time will tell ,i wish him well

I don’t think John Guidetti is as good as some believe, but right now we need his signature. His weaknesses in finishing are compounded by his invisibility as an aeriel threat.

I also accept your thoughts on James Forrest’s ‘disruptive influence’, and think it’s valid argument, and it’s an indictment for squad quality, when a player walks into the side with an injury record like his. His talent is that he can beat a man, – what does that say for the rest of the squad?

Likewise with bells on for Mikael Lustig who remains the best defender on the Celtic internet.
