Creative options

Since July I’ve written about the over-dependence we have on Kris Commons as a creative player.  He’s pretty much our only option, and if he’s not fancied, injured, suspended or just off-form, we look like a team full of energy but without a key to open the door.

It may be that Ronny doesn’t figure on having a classic No. 10 in his team, and it’s more than possible that we won’t play one against European heavyweights, but against packed SPFL defences, we need someone who can create space in dangerous areas.

As we mentioned last month, some years ago Celtic reportedly looked at Bosnian international, Semir Stilic, while he was at Lech Poznan.  His star faded before a journey through Ukrainian and Turkish football before he returned to Poland with Wisla Krakow 12 months ago on an 18 month contract.  Since then he’s been a sensation and has kept Wisla in touch with the top of the table.

He’s refused a new contract offer from Wisla and is subject to a bid from Dinamo Zagreb, thought to be in the region of €250k.  He’s likely to be on circa €2k per week.  We’ve scouted the player, he’s soon out of contract, going cheap, on low wages, on form and we’re short of what he can give.

This is the kind of player Dinamo Zagreb pick up for buttons and enables them to compete as effectively as they did against Celtic with a fraction of our budget.  He has the making of an effective January signing.

but why do we keep buying from this league, the players certainly arent better than any from other SPFL teams

    Maybe this guy is?

Clubs like Aberdeen & Dundee Utd have good players alright but its worth remembering that a number of Scottish clubs have cleared their debts recently and are not under any pressure to sell players any more.

Its folly to write a player off before we’ve seen him play, I thought we’d learned that lesson already!?

our track record of players from this league is not good

its not that strong a league

there are better more experienced and better value players in Eastern Europe

We cry out for an Eremenko type player I dont get it

  4. If it’s not about fair play, honesty and sporting integrity,

    What’s it all about, Alfie?

  5. I don’t expect us to sign anyone before our 2 week winter break from football in Gran Canaria, where we are going to play 2 games against “very good teams”.

I think the comments about not selling rather than buying is a statement towards Lawell?

  6. Yesterday I posted link to the article about 10 talents from Eastern Europe who can be top players. There were 3 from Poland, two from Legia Warsaw.

In the other post somebody asked about the prices.

One of two from Legia Warsaw is creative midfielder Krystian Bielik who turned 17 few days back. He will be going to Arsenal who won the race for the player. Arsenal offer 1,5 + 1 m euros. Legia expect 2,5 + 1 m euros.I think this will end in range 3 m euros. This is the price for one of the biggest tallents who played for Poland, played few games in league and one in Europa League.

  7. I think that Bielik could jump into first Celtic squad right now.

The other clubs who were interested were Roma, Tottenham and few Bundesliga clubs.

Legia bougth him for 50 000 euros few months back.

That league may not be the strongest but that is no reflection on any individual player and certainly not a reason not to sign someone. Nor should any past failures be on a potential new signings record – not his fault!

He should be judged on his performances alone.

Well could big EFE be on the move down south I would wish the big guy well if it happens I think many Celtic fans have given up on the player so it could be a good move for him. H.H.

Absent new signings, I just cannot see the benefit of the Gran Canaria trip. Doesn’t appear to have any significant financial impact on the club. To be frank, I don’t think the squad deserve a holiday given this season’s efforts to date.

    —————————————————————-

This trip will generate additional income for the club which will help PL in pursuit of his latest bonus. There is no footballing reason for us to participate in this tournament. It is yet another step on the road to becoming the footballing equivalent of the Harlem Golbetrotters.
