Credibility and self-demeaning rules on boot colour

437

I learned that it’s important to choose the issues you have control over with your kids, and those you allow them to control. Let them take decisions that don’t really matter, as long as you decide the crucial stuff. Footwear was an early one for me. When the boys were younger, I realised how important it was for them to wear the shoes they wanted to wear, not the ones I thought right.

As long as they fitted correctly, it didn’t really matter which shoes they wore, so I let them have control over this issue. Instead of objecting to shoe choices, I supported them. They grew up learning how to make decisions on stuff like footwear, and kids are no different from the rest of us, they like making decisions on things that affect them. While I made them eat vegetables and rationed sweets.

If I turned to them now and said, “You’ll not get the wear out of them”, “They look ridiculous”, or “No, I don’t like the colour”, it would be so far removed from what they expect is their right to decide, they would think I was joking. But they still don’t bat an eye when I tell them what’s good for them and what’s not, because they know I only impose rules that matter.

We have other guidelines at work. We don’t wear jeans. Well not often. Because we’re all adults, sometimes people pitch up wearing them. I’ve never once asked why. Maybe it’s a laundry situation. Occasionally, I know they are going to do a stressful task in front of a PC for 8 hours, so assume they just want to wear what feels comfortable.

Sometimes I reckon it’s because people need a bit of scope to do their own thing, and as it doesn’t really matter, I worry about things which do matter.

There’s another feature of management I’ve seen in business. Every manager needs to make decisions. It’s part of what we expect of ourselves when we are appointed. No one has ever sat down with a manager to carry out a review and been told, “We’re doing just fine, nothing’s going to change”.

If the manager has scope to make significant improvements, the changes will be ambitious. From others, you will get plans for a new Tidy Desk Policy.

Newco manager, Pedro Caixinha, has informed his players they cannot wear green boots, as that is the colour of Celtic. Set aside the fact that this is a contrived attempt to create faux rivalry – it simply won’t. This is a serious contravention of the rules of leadership.

Setting rules about stuff which no one should care about, is self-demeaning. It costs the rule-maker credibility, and credibility is everything in leadership. Especially in a football dressing room.

This guy will be lucky to see the September Weekend.

    Musonda’s YouTube video is McGeady-esque.

    Looks like a great prospect.

I would be pleasantly surprised if this comes to anything.

    ____

BBC’s Chris McLaughlin: “There have been no discussions between #Celtic and #Chelsea re sale of Charly Musonda. BR likes him. Loan deal possible but not imminent”

Sounds a bit ominous. Does kind of make sense though…

Why bring in Hayes? Why are we not waiting to see what happens with Roberts?

  2. THETIMREAPER on 3RD JULY 2017 1:01 PM

Musonda hasn’t made a single appearance for Chelsea. He was recalled from the Betis loan in January but didn’t kick a ball even after the League was won. His prospects there are limited. He only has two years left on his deal and is 21 soon. He needs to settle down somewhere and start playing football. If Chelsea punt him and insert a buy back option they have little to lose. Brendan has a good reputation for developing talent. The lad was up here in May and liked what he saw. He has a big Belgian mate here. Two years up here to develop and then back down the road for a sizeable fee would make sense with everyone a winner.

    ____

That all makes sense. He’s gonna go somewhere.

Nothing more than a pathetic PR stunt (insert own Traynor rhyming slang joke).

Not the slightest bit bothered if any of our players wear red boots.

Thanks to all who gave me advice on Gairloch, we had a fabulous holiday.

We were staying in a converted old croft looking out onto the small/ little minches, next stop The Atlantic Ocean, for those that know the area Gairloch was over to the left, you could see Skye and Harris straight ahead and Lewis to the right. We were two minutes walk to a totally remote shingle beach and ten minutes to a sandy one. Ring Plover and Oyster Catcher were nesting on the shingles. A sand Martin nesting colony was up at the same dunes, it was amazing to see how tiny the holes were that they nest in, other birds very noticeable were Linnet, Stonechat, Wheatear, Kittiwake, Dunlin, Siskin and Skylark,Common Sandpiper and Ring Ouzel were spotted too, albeit not as many, all without trying just out walking to the beach. Seen other birds too but just not close enough to 100% identify them, albeit I have an educated guess what they were.

An Tearmann. We done the glass bottomed boat trip, a fabulous trip, Common Seal, Grey Seal, plenty of fish, crabs and starfish, spotted Cormorants, Greylag Geese and Common Tern. The highlight of the boat trip was the skipper allowing our 7 year old to steer us home, it made her holiday. Sadly no dolphins, porpoises etc, seemingly the wind was in the wrong direction. Didn’t see Polecat or Wildcat at the croft either, maybe next time.

The highlight for me seeing a Golden Eagle in Conlin near Garve, just spectacular,we had a really good view of it, plenty of Red Kite at Black Isle too. Lapwing and Red Sqirrels near Aviemore. A fabulous 9 days away. A sign of a good holiday when everyone is sad to be returning home.

Ok on to football matters, who have we signed?

    Hail Hail

Final player review of 16-17 invincible season looks at the strikers. Dembele v Griffiths. Only taken me a month. I’m off to lie down. Dive in! HH

    ——-

Interesting read mate. The last example I can recall of a team using 4 strikers effectively was Man United with Yorke / Cole, Sheringham / Solskjaer. Most teams only play with 1 these days so 3 should suffice. For us playing in Scotland, I think we can get away with 2, we struggled to give Griffiths enough game time as it is, so consider a 3rd striker on significant money and whether that could be better spent elsewhere. Yes there was a spell where Dembele and Griffiths were both injured, and that is a risk, but that is where the academy should step up and fill the void until the transfer window opens and you can get someone on loan.

On Griffiths I think he has 2 problems, 1 is the form and potential of Dembele. 2 is the fact that Sinclair cannot really play anywhere else other than in a front 3. He isn’t an out and winger that could play left mid in a flat 4-4-2, nor is he suited to playing as a 10 in a diamond. He effectively plays as an old inside left, where he becomes a de facto second striker as we switch to a 352 when we have the ball and 433 without. If Sinclair and Dembele are playing, there is no place for Griffiths. Leigh has matured into a terrific player, and his delivery and threat from set pieces is missed when he isn’t in the team, with only Armstrong anywhere close to him.

You note that Dembele only scored once from outside the box(a beautiful 25 yard curler against Hamilton I think) and suggest he should focus on being a penalty box striker. Whilst I understand your logic, I think Dembele at his age is trying to expand his repertoire and develop his outside the box game so that he is more of a threat from distance. You also point out that Griffiths only had 2 attempts all season from inside 6 yards, astonishing for a player who loves a goal, but not surprising when you watch him, he is always looking for a cutback instead of making the run for a tap in.

In summary I think when you look at the numbers and watch how they play I think they could be a really good partnership, possibly in a diamond with Rogic as the 10, but it would come as the expense of Sinclair. Definitely worth a try, but given Sinclair’s importance to the team I think it would only be on fleeting occasions.

I lived in the South of England for many years and knew / still know many Chelsea fans. The overriding feeling was a complete disregard for Scottish football. Those who knew me preferred Celtic for the very simple reason that that was my team but they were not really interested. There were/are some NF types at the Bridge ( though not many ) who side with the Hun extremists but they are certainly not typical of the majority of Chelsea fans. Indeed, pre-Abramovic, Chelsea fans were seen in the same light as Thistle fans were in Glasgow ie a wee bit eccentric and not really very passionate about winning .
