Critical autumn fixtures provide comfort for Celtic

375

A big pitfall in the autumn fixtures is who you face after a demanding European game.  Teams are more likely to drop points domestic away from home immediately after an away European game than in any other scenario.

A few years back, Celtic had the misfortune of four domestic away games after European fixtures, a wave of complaints perhaps ensured these fixtures are now evenly spread, as they are this time.  Following our Champions League games, we have away trips to St Mirren, St Johnstone and Livingston, and we face Livingston, Hibs and Dundee United at home.

Livingston caused Celtic lots of problems last season, so facing them twice will cause some concern.  In their corresponding fixtures, Newco have home and away games against Aberdeen, who are a perennial thorn in the Ibrox club’s soft underbelly.  Points will be dropped by whoever is unprepared.

Celtic, Newco and Hearts – likely to be Scotland’s group stage competitors, are all kept apart after European games, to assist fixture scheduling problems.  Motherwell and Dundee United may surprise everyone and qualify for the Conference League groups.

Between the league kick-off at home to Aberdeen on 31 July and facing Ross County on 12 November, when club football breaks for the World Cup, Celtic will play 16 games in the league, six in the Champions League and probably two in the League Cup.

24 games in 15 weeks sounds like a lot, but it will be our lightest load at the start of the season in many years.  Others are likely to play 28 games in that time.

Fully agree with your point that preparation is key to avoiding dropped league points following CL games .

It’s comforting to know that Ange will not be caught unprepared . It will be equally comforting if the board ensure that he has the players to implement his preparations .

I’m convinced that’s a psychological thing rather than a physical thing. Not sure what preparation you need to do to overcome it.

Maybe the cerebral version of training for muscle memory? ;)

  7. Regarding the Cich thing am I right in thinking that the two possible explanations for what has happened are

    1. The SPFL have capitulated to the huns .

    or

    2. The SPFL have put the huns in their place but are too pusillanimous to say so?

Either possibility suggests that the system is dysfunctional and is run for the benefit of one club.

    Timid. Cowardly. Bottle merchants.

  9. Robertson is daring the SPFL to divulge the contents of this outcome, it MUST be in the favour of Sevco, they are mocking the administartors of the game here because they can,if the SPFL imposed something by way of a penalty this would be appealed to the SFA, the 5 Way agreement gives them imunity from any consequences imposed by the SFA so they will contest everything knowing the SFA will not refer them to CAS, win win for them, the Sevco disciplinary cycle has no outcome as it does not go beyond the borders of the game here.

  10. The SPL ‘computer’ pitches Celtic away every season at any possible opportunity. And has done in every conceivable sequence. Winning away from Parkhead has fortunately been turned into an art form. There are no favours or advantages in playing without Celtic supporters, and none in playing to much fewer than at home in friendly surroundings and a better surface.

  11. EL

But not too timid to declare them the same club in 2012?

We don’t know the terms of the renegotiated deal despite hun bluster and a statement via Douglas Park not Sevco. This one has got legs and will run .

  12. Last season we played the Huns very early, before Ange had finished the rebuilding and before the transfer window closed. This season it’s them who have to rebuild, so it was too much to expect an early derby.

It was weird watching that. Some places I frequented ; Chubby Chester, Henry Afrikas, Rock Garden, Osmosis.

Loads of pubs I recognise from Glasgow as a child and which did not attract me at once I grew up!.

Amazing how many pubs/nightclubs Glasgow could support in the 70/80/90s but there is a fraction now.

PS Danny Brown’s was a favourite of my parents when courting. In my day it was split into Caskies on St Vincent side and O’Henry’s on Drury St.

i hadn’t realised they had been one pub or even that they backed onto each other until my dad pointed it out. Had my first cappuccino in Caskie’s as we pretended to be grown up in our final year at Uni

    Great times

I would think it’s both . Modern sports science should aim to address all aspects . Thankfully Ange is a modern , clued up manager and his staff have the necessary expertise .

  16. Why would Celtic be interested in Calvin Ramsey on loan from Liverpool,At present we have 2 fine Right Backs in Josep Jaranovic and Tony Ralston.

  17. I take it,the most important thing about the Cinch fiasco,to most fans, will be,did the Huns get paid, will they again get paid next season?

Unbelievable that this has been kept from the supporters by the SPFL.Another agreement, this time, just a two way. That’s OK then.

Or is everything just “Going over my head”.

My take on the cinch stuff

Cinch are delighted with the goings on, more exposure

SPFL (the clubs apart from one) delighted Cinch are not contesting the sponsorship contract

The Huns playing to the gallery as they do, the sponsorship contract is only going to effect one Klub

…Caskies and O’Henrys – brings back fond memories.

Worked in the former, drank and caroused a bit in the latter as we knew some of the staff.

Caskies used to be pure pumpin’ on a Friday; heaps of wannabe yuppies throwing cash around. Always a good vibe tho. HH

Isn’t the Cinch shenanigans just the perfect example of bun exceptionalism…more of the rules simply don’t apply to us. Erses !

  20. Hopefully we’ve seen the last of the big buck waste of cash splash.

Ajeti, Barkas and McCarthy….. Realistically how much can we reccoup for these three.

McCarthy has a chance to impress in the close season but I have my doubts…..

I’m sure Queens Park Rangers are hoping he gets promoted to the Championship as he loves to award penalties to any team with Rangers in their title!
