Crucial question when club considers sacking a manager

196

Celtic rested a goalkeeper, four defenders, two central midfielders, a striker and a winger, but were able to shine on against Championship Raith Rovers.  The 5-0 scoreline reflected the gap between clubs at the top of the Premiership and those mid-table in the division below.  Rovers manager Barry Robson is only six weeks in the job and is the third manager the club have had this season.  A turnaround will not be easy.

Raith sit two points below Queen’s Park, although the Kirkcaldy side have a game in hand.  Queen’s also have the burden of a Scottish Cup quarterfinal to contend with (in case you missed some of the weekend’s results).

Queen’s are in a miserable run of form.  They have lost five and drawn one and won one of their seven league games in the last two months.  Manager Callum Davidson seemed to have hit the wall, but can rely on his old modus operandi of winning Scottish Cup ties at Ibrox to keep himself in a job for a few weeks yet.

Saturday was the 25th anniversary of a pivotal moment in our modern history.  Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle knocked Celtic out of the Scottish Cup on 8 February 2000.  Celtic knew they could do better  and the following day manager John Barnes was sacked.

When a club considers sacking their manager this is always the crucial question: Can we do better, or is this acceptable?  I will go out on a limb here and predict Newco will not sack Philippe Clement after yet another humiliation.  Results like this are now accepted at Ibrox.  In a few years, the fans will be comfortably numb, humiliations will no longer hurt.

“Money”, is often Phil’s cited defence, but he was unable to rely on that excuse last night.  He also diverted blame away from himself and to the players, saying, “Today was nothing to do with tactics. It’s about the quality of the moment.”  Which is an interesting strategy.  His claim that Newco players “wanted it too much” suggests he had yet to watch a reply of Jefte at the Queen’s goal.

And that penalty kick!  Referee Calum Scott; hmmmm.

  1. Great that wee diazan can play on Wednesday.

We have not changed our player development programme. We still sign young players.

No fanzone was ever applied for by celtic.

We did apply for a hotel, bar, cafe, museum, superstore and ticket office etc… that was approved. If not going ahead with hotel perhaps change plans to develop the envious of the stadium with all of the above stuff including an indoor and outdoor fanzone, entertainment space for supporters etc…

  2. FF reaction to UEFA:

“Im convinced I’ve died at some point and this is hell.”

“Our board would struggle to get their voice heard in my local bowling club never mind at the top table of europe.

Like it or not they are doing things we can only dream of right now.

I used to doff my cap at folk who supported teams like st johnstone who never win %^*& all but they turn up anyway and now ive realised thats us, we dont win nothing but turn up anyway.”

  3. So if Celtic spend the £11,000,000 on a fan zone they don’t have to pay any tax…

seems like a ‘no brainer’ to me.

That flying scissors kick on Leigh Griffith in the penalty box was denied a penalty kick by Boaby Madhun,( he of the Salmon Leap EK hun supporters club) as far as I can remember.

It was also that supporters club who were nominated by soopaAlly to vote for him so that fein dissent to Mike Ashley board meetin(the one with the Gazebo) while he was on £100k gardening leave.

Day after they are humiliated ….

    – Great financials

    – Tierney pre-contract confirmed

    – Daizen cleared

    – Home tie

    Wow

  7. The signing of KT is an expensive gamble on his ability to stay fit .

I love him as a player ,so I understand why Brendan is taking the risk.

  8. Celtic at home to Hibs. Hmmm…..am guessing der Hun SFA and der Hun Scottish Gas didn’t fancy Hampden Park being covered in green, white and orange on Cup Final day?

  9. Good morning all from a mild 3 degree Garngad.

Hopefully Daizen tears it up mañana night.

Now do we stick or twist against Der German Hun?

I think we should be staying in game to about 70 minute’s then hopefully at 0-0 go for a goal or 2, whatever we must be in it enough for the 2nd tie.

But then that’s why I am a Housing manager and not a football manager. 🤣

Either way wee Daizen’s ban being uplifted has given us all a lift.

    I posted this last night

    Re tax

We had a gross profit of £43m paying £11m tax leaving £32m net profit.

In order to pay no tax we would have to spend £43m on projects.

If we spent £11m on projects then our gross profit would be £32m paying £8m in tax

  11. GREAT News last night about DIAZEN/CELTIC winning the Appeal to UEFA.

Heres hoping that Diazen terrorises the Bayern defence throughout the game tomorrow.

If he manages to score a Goal or Two…even better. Now that I know that he is free to play v Bayern at Celtic Park, I may have to ” invest” some dosh with Mr Bookie.

    LOL.

    HH.

  12. I had already placed Bets for Celtic v Bayern as I had ASSUMED that Diazen would still be serving the 2 game suspension ?

I will now have a look at other Bets that INCLUDE Diazen.

I’m away to see what the odds are on Diazen scoring a HAT TRICK v Bayern ?

    LOL

    HH.

  13. I just HAD to place a couple more Bets now that Diazen is FREE to play.

Diazen to score at least TWO Goals…40/1 with Bet365.

Diazen to score at least THREE Goals…150/1 with Bet365.

Diazen to score at ANYTIME…is 9/2 with Bet365.

    Fill yer Boots Daizen Bhoy.

  14. Morning all. Manky day down here. Cold and very wet, Still, I presume there is a warm glow in the hearts of most Celtic supporters. Can’t ask much better from the Cup draw and tomorrow we play Bayern Munich with Maeda allowed to take the field.

  15. Comedy gold on the BBC Scottish football webpage thingy reporting our glorious financials buried in the last few lines of the Kieran Tierney story , this must be so hard for them to take.

  16. Back in the day my DA used to tell me that having an ALL GREEN Final v the Hibs at Hampden was the ideal choice of opponent.

He took me to several ALL Green Finals at Hampden and Celtic WON the lot .

So its an all green quarter final at Celtic Park….that will do me nicely.

Some so called ” Comedian” did the Draw last night on BBC, when he picked out Queens Park to play Aberdeen, he made some comment to that wee twat Jonathon Sutherland, about NOT wishing to pass any comment on how Queens Park were in the Draw, and how they had beaten ” rangers” .

I am assuming that this so called comedian ( who Ive never heard of) was/is a HUN Fan ?

    LOL.

    HH.

  17. I really rate Alistair Johnston. A great signing. Upgrade of JJ who I also really liked.

The young Canuck is CL stantly seeking to improve and develop which is a massive asset. He has added a really good positive attacking aspect to his game since Kuhn and BR have been here.

He still makes mistakes but he learns and makes less of the same mistakes as he goes on. I hope we have him for another couple of years at least.

All they said I found his interview pre Bayern just a bit too deferential. A bit too much about how great they were and a bit too much about how in awe of Davis he was.

In general I really do appreciate Bayern are a strong team but also think they are not invincible. Leverkusen showed that last season and Feyenoord and Villa have already this season. Kompany is learning his trade.

I really hope our team believe in their ‘right’ to be at this table on Wednesday and next week. It was my only criticism of Ange that he seemed to almost put the CL on a pedestal for his players and when they went out onto the park the 1000% belief they should be there didn’t seem to be transmitted through the team. I hope WE believe tomorrow night and get the result we can.

I was just enjoying the Johnston interview; I found it frank and full of great insights.

He’s a very humble and lucid ghuy, willing to be honest about how he sees the game and his role in it.

Jus becos he’s deferential doesn’t mean he wont be mixing it.

Can be useful to talk them up, then cut them down a peg or two.

I have a feeling (mibby it’s a hope) we can give them a fright at home, then Atalanta them in the Munich tie.

All project expenditure may not be classed as allowable against corporate tax in the financial year it occurs. If the project expenditure is deemed to be capital expenditure, then it amortised over a number of years.

I’m not an accountant but if any are lurking they may be able to clarify this.

“All they said I found his interview pre Bayern just a bit too deferential. A bit too much about how great they were and a bit too much about how in awe of Davis he was.”

They are great and every player a level above ours, even most of their squad players. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe we can win. Better to appreciate the reality and work harder and smarter because of it. Rather that than another Dortmund.

“It was my only criticism of Ange that he seemed to almost put the CL on a pedestal for his players and when they went out onto the park the 1000% belief they should be there didn’t seem to be transmitted through the team. When we went at Real and others I didn’t feel like Ange’s team had any fear, deference or lack of belief.
