Culpable defence, but that’s not all

824

The most pleasing aspect about last night was the manager’s reaction afterwards: “Yet another soft goal”. “We don’t defend a basic ball into the box”.  But, before Cristian Gamboa and Craig Gordon pick up the tab for a bad night in Lithuania, more went wrong.  Much more.

Goals change games and you can be sure games will change when Celtic are defending the way they are right now.  Gamboa losing his man for the goal was in keeping with what we should expect.  Cristian is good going forward but is not the most diligent at the back.  We need a backup, backup, right back.  Right?

Despite all that’s going wrong in defence, I am just as concerned about how the midfield is operating.  Our passing was again poor.  Olivier Ntcham opened the scoring after two minutes and opened the Suduva defence late in the game for Moussa Dembele to shoot wide, but for the rest of the game his passing was as inaccurate as it was against AEK and Rosenborg away.

Callum McGregor, so often a key to unlock packed defences, was ineffective.  I would like to see him play the deep lying playmaker roll over our next three games.  There he can dictate the pace and accuracy of our passing, leaving space for Rogic to play in front of him.

Moussa Dembele is our best striker, but the shape of the team left him isolated and looking just as out of sorts as Odsonne Edouard did at home to AEK.  We have potent strikers who see little of the ball.

On the positive side, Suduva were as poor a team as I can remember playing in recent seasons – and I include the Gibraltareños (as they will be known after March) in that.  We will reach the Europa League group stage.  How effectively we compete there will be determined by the arrivals over the next seven days.

Sure every PLC has a duty to its shareholders but it has an even bigger duty to its customer base, in our case the support. If you don’t have a customer base then your shares are worth Hee haw. In our case most of the shareholders are supporters though we might not own most of the shares.

So Celtic PLC stop treating us like morons. You want our cash then treat us with respect because as David17 says if you feck up where we are now then there will be no hiding place in the future.

I personally don’t buy into this if we demand action against RFCIL then we will become isolated. What’s new? If we are ostracised from the Scottish game then surely that would be a reason to ply our trade elsewhere. The Golden Goose that was the Champions League is now beyond us and every other great club that doesn’t have a population to fill UEFA’s corrupt coffers. The only thing we have to fear is our own inaction.

I’m a cynical sort and as such have always been concerned that Celtic wont do anything unless forced to by the support. Our Board are interested in money and status and don’t want to rock the boat incase it costs them money. Hiding behind the fact that the likes of Motherwell and Hamilton don’t want to loss the blue pound (allegedly) for a few years doesn’t cut it. The fact is the game was rigged/corrupt/cheated for at least 12 years and nothing has been done about it. To make matters worse, my personal view is the Huns are cheating again as money has appeared from ‘nowhere’. Celtic’s inaction to date has been unacceptable. Last year PL stepped down from the SPFL Board shortly after the Supreme Court decision which was quite convenient as they were set to review matters. One year on he has rejoined said Board. A cynic would suggest this was well planned. Barring a last minute intervention, it looks to me like Celtic have let their shareholders and supporters down badly.

So I fried Hamish a slice of liver,,you can probably smell it from there. The old woman at checkout asks you eat liver?

That got me thinking it is very old fashion. And some of the older ones on the blog probably like it. And then I realized who am I kidding those bhoys probably love it and it was someone’s wedding or Christmas meal.

Own up if you like liver? Hamish does.

    Happy Friday everyone

  11. Good evening bhoys and ghirls

Have read all the blogs and comments over the past week or so and some of the posts and discussions have made for pretty depressing reading.

I’ve refrained from getting involved with individuals as I fell there is a fair bit of trolling going on but some of what has been said about the board, PL in particular and Brendan and the coaching staff resonates so at times it’s difficult to differentiate between the trolls and the genuine Tims who are rightly concerned as to how we have got into this situation as a club from such a seemingly invincible position. From my perspective it smacks of complacency and arrogance. As others have rightly said, the recent blog from Paul67 on our dominance being guaranteed for years to come epitomised that mindset. Apart from being such errant nonsense when our business is sporting competition it was embarrassing and if a Hun had written it we would have been all over it about their supremacist sense of entitlement.

Anyway, I digress, Brendan’s presser today and interview last night do worry me as he looks thoroughly unhappy and if that’s the case then I am unhappy. For those of us who lived through the late 80s. the 90s and the cheating years (the aforementioned + the noughties) then these past few years have been Karma coated with jelly and ice cream. Brendan has been the best thing to happen to the club since MON. If he leaves as a result of not being backed when we have clearly got the money to back him will be unforgiveable for those who allowed that to happen. Of course he is not without blame and has weaknesses (perhaps too much focus on possession and lack of improvement at set pieces both for and against us) but the positives overwhelmingly outweigh the negatives thus far and so he should have been backed, end of!

Where we go from here, who knows but one thing I am certain of is that if we pull together as a club in the next 9 days, i.e. the board, coaching staff, players (the ones who want to wear the jersey) and fans, then the world will look and feel like a very different place. So here’s my prediction – at this time on Sunday 2nd September 2018, we will all be heading to bed celebrating 3 Celtic wins and a slapping down for the enemies of our club.

    In Brendan we Trust!

    Hail Hail and KTF

Delaneys,,I knew someone on here would love liver but didn’t figure you for some reason. Auldheid or someone. But thanks for the info and I don’t wanna try. ;)

Sid1888, great post. This bit ” If he leaves as a result of not being backed when we have clearly got the money to back him will be unforgiveable for those who allowed that to happen. ”

Remember that and never forget it and keep telling everyone because on here you will be told ge was under forming and succumbed to the pressure and chose to walk.

An average manager I would be blah, but a guy who brings 2 trebles. That’s some going you gotta admit and he gets the club.

To eff up from such a position is hard to believe.
