Culpable defence, but that’s not all

824

The most pleasing aspect about last night was the manager’s reaction afterwards: “Yet another soft goal”. “We don’t defend a basic ball into the box”.  But, before Cristian Gamboa and Craig Gordon pick up the tab for a bad night in Lithuania, more went wrong.  Much more.

Goals change games and you can be sure games will change when Celtic are defending the way they are right now.  Gamboa losing his man for the goal was in keeping with what we should expect.  Cristian is good going forward but is not the most diligent at the back.  We need a backup, backup, right back.  Right?

Despite all that’s going wrong in defence, I am just as concerned about how the midfield is operating.  Our passing was again poor.  Olivier Ntcham opened the scoring after two minutes and opened the Suduva defence late in the game for Moussa Dembele to shoot wide, but for the rest of the game his passing was as inaccurate as it was against AEK and Rosenborg away.

Callum McGregor, so often a key to unlock packed defences, was ineffective.  I would like to see him play the deep lying playmaker roll over our next three games.  There he can dictate the pace and accuracy of our passing, leaving space for Rogic to play in front of him.

Moussa Dembele is our best striker, but the shape of the team left him isolated and looking just as out of sorts as Odsonne Edouard did at home to AEK.  We have potent strikers who see little of the ball.

On the positive side, Suduva were as poor a team as I can remember playing in recent seasons – and I include the Gibraltareños (as they will be known after March) in that.  We will reach the Europa League group stage.  How effectively we compete there will be determined by the arrivals over the next seven days.

I’d written one of my rare verbose responses to your post. It disappeared, page reloaded.

Gist of it is,from reading various sites in the last, say six weeks, there’s a growing groundswell of dissent. I don’t know if it’s time for a Timternet relaunch of CELTS FOR CHANGE,or a NOT THE VIEW 2.0,but there’s a growing disconnect between the board and the fans, and the realisation that we’ve been done over again, that horrible feeling in your gut that your own side have betrayed you.

Then to discover that your worst fears are true,Res 12 was deliberately and royally screwed from Day One,naw, that’s it for me.

Support the team,of course. Worship the balance sheet or the nice suit, not so much.

Think I’ll start a new blog and call it Scunnert Celts. Keep it ad free anaw. I might get JavaScript to sponsor it,as everyone on here has to switch theirs off.

  2. Good morning friends from a dry and bright Glasgow Airport. 2 weeks in Javea and 6 points and Euro qualification by the time I return please. Play nice now.

I hope your Dad gets to see a smashing 10IAR. Same as I’m hoping for the same for my Dad.

Actually,I hope they get to see thirty and more, that suits on many fronts!

    Btw,he sits just behind you,I think. 106.

Re googling in quizzes, that is as self-defeating as telling lies to your doctor. But…

I do confess to googling in last night’s quiz. In the first round,it was pretty obvious that MAHETHEMADMAN was looking for MEATLOAF as an answer. I thought Fish was mildly amusing, put it down and checked to see if the lover of frozen yoghurt had been, perhaps, born on a USAF air base in East Anglia.

Nope. Seems “British” rock star was a red herring. And yet I still didn’t get a point for Fish!

  14. Have to say I’m disappointed that BR thought his top 3 targets should be Eduoard (fair enough), McGinn and McKenna.

What a lack of ambition. What a waste of money on a scouting network. What a shambles of a transfer window.

Some downright lack of foreplanning and preparation.

  15. Okay lets boycott Celtic make us bankrupt buy DD’s shares and get Celtic run by the fans.

Going from the comments on CQN the main things the fans would do is

Sack PL for being a money grabber/ Keep PL for running a financially well run club

Get rid of all the Tories on the board/Make sure the board is full of the best business people

Back Brendan as he is the best manager since Jock/Don’t back him as his signing have been mostly poor

Spend money on the stadium and surroundings to ensure a steady non-football income/ All money goes towards the team

Get John Terry in/ Don’t let John Terry darken Celtic’s door

Invest in the youths/Get rid of Lennoxtown

Sell Ntcham (any other first team player apart from KT and Broonie)/ Build the team round Ntcham

Boycott all other Scottish clubs/Support the team

It’s almost if you have a big organisation you need to pay people to make the day to day decisions and pay them……or do we have a vote of Celtic fans when we want to paint the toilets?

  16. Lived and bacon is it? Lambs liver is best, fry good quality bacon in pan, remove bacon keep lovely juices in there. Douse the liver in some seasoned flour then add to pan. Cook for 5 minutes then throw bacon back in for a minute or two.

Serve with creamy mash loaded with spring onions and butter. Feast for a king is that. HH

  17. oh no McKenna back on the radar , you are having a laugh , panic written all over it , worse than what we have just now and that’s poor , another project for way to much money , heaven help us in this is the standard of scouting come on BR keep to your word. We need experience right now to guide not another blind leading the blind.

  18. So young KT has said he is happy at Celtic at the moment and going nowhere.

So could the smsm not have asked KT at the start of the window, before writing all the stuff about clubs wanting him and us having to sell him, oh no wait, it doesn’t fit the agenda. Hun bassas.

Anyway let’s skelp Hamilton tomorrow and boost our confidence.

Get a few new recruits in ahead of Thursday, pump the Suds.

Confidence up and skelp the huns, then Natural order will resume.

  20. They say that Herman Melville’s novel, ‘Moby Dick’ is about a white whale. Bu it is an uncannily accurate reflection of the obsession some posters have with PL . Who knows, they may be right. But obsession is unhealthy.

    Anyway, read this:

”All that most maddens and torments; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified and made practically assailable in Moby Dick”.

  21. tell ye what, Neil Lennon , gets it right.

they were shite before so improvement is easy, still not good enough though.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers not certainties for second – Hibs’ Neil Lennon

    By Brian McLauchlin

    BBC Scotland

Steven Gerrard and Neil Lennon came face-to-face as players when Liverpool took on Celtic

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers being the closest challengers to Celtic this season is not a foregone conclusion, says Hibs head coach Neil Lennon.

Rangers are unbeaten under ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard, but Lennon believes Aberdeen, Hearts, and his own side can fight for second place behind Celtic.

“I think it’s too early to say that Celtic and Rangers will be the top two teams,” Lennon said.

“I don’t believe in the hype and a lot of hysteria around big clubs.”

Rangers, who have gone nine games without defeat, have progressed to the Europa League play-off stage, while Aberdeen and Hibs fell short.

However, the Dons have finished runners-up behind Celtic for the last four seasons – the last two ahead of Rangers.

Hibs ran them both close for the runners-up spot last season, and Hearts lead this season’s early standings.

Lafferty a no risk signing – Gerrard

“I still think Celtic will win the league,” Lennon said. “Whether the gap gets closer remains to be seen.

“As for second place, you would have to say Rangers are firm favourites – there is obviously a significant improvement at Rangers.

“For me, it wasn’t that major a job to do on the back of what wasn’t a great season last year and they are investing, which is something the likes of ourselves, Hearts and Aberdeen can’t do.”

Hibs achieved a record Premiership points total in finishing fourth last season and Lennon is unsure if his side can replicate that, especially after having sold influential midfielder John McGinn to Aston Villa.

“I’m not sure we will amass as many points this season, but I could be wrong. We have to factor in we have lost some good players.”
