Culpable defence, but that’s not all

The most pleasing aspect about last night was the manager’s reaction afterwards: “Yet another soft goal”. “We don’t defend a basic ball into the box”.  But, before Cristian Gamboa and Craig Gordon pick up the tab for a bad night in Lithuania, more went wrong.  Much more.

Goals change games and you can be sure games will change when Celtic are defending the way they are right now.  Gamboa losing his man for the goal was in keeping with what we should expect.  Cristian is good going forward but is not the most diligent at the back.  We need a backup, backup, right back.  Right?

Despite all that’s going wrong in defence, I am just as concerned about how the midfield is operating.  Our passing was again poor.  Olivier Ntcham opened the scoring after two minutes and opened the Suduva defence late in the game for Moussa Dembele to shoot wide, but for the rest of the game his passing was as inaccurate as it was against AEK and Rosenborg away.

Callum McGregor, so often a key to unlock packed defences, was ineffective.  I would like to see him play the deep lying playmaker roll over our next three games.  There he can dictate the pace and accuracy of our passing, leaving space for Rogic to play in front of him.

Moussa Dembele is our best striker, but the shape of the team left him isolated and looking just as out of sorts as Odsonne Edouard did at home to AEK.  We have potent strikers who see little of the ball.

On the positive side, Suduva were as poor a team as I can remember playing in recent seasons – and I include the Gibraltareños (as they will be known after March) in that.  We will reach the Europa League group stage.  How effectively we compete there will be determined by the arrivals over the next seven days.

Dinner for four at the Walfrid at Hamilton game on Sunday!

    Morning Tims..

Usually go for 4 nil at home, but I’ve a feeling its gonna be 6 ?

Need a good performance AND result today to get some confidence back.

  4. Ivehadtochangemymind: Went to (local) Easons yesterday to look for some books on the United Irishmen for you. Sadly, there were none there. Did a bit of research on the timternet and found this one, which is available in Carlton Books in the Gallowgate:

Dissent into Treason by Fergus Whelan.

I’m back to work to tomorrow and will ask the history teachers for recommendations for you. I’m over next Sunday so I can bring a book over for you if you can’t source it locally.

Is your analysis of Brown based on 7 European +2 league games this season so far versus a whole season last time?

    Seems a tad unfair.

  7. BBC coverage of the Papal visit to Ireland much improved today. The lady who is the chief commentator is quite obviously an Irish Catholic, talking as she does of Our Lady and the like. She even is happy to proclaim that she loves Donegal and mentioned in passing that it is in the likes of there and Mayo where the Faith is still strong.

I normally find around 10 games is a good enough representative sample to form some opinions.

WE are not talking slight marginal reductions here. This is huge regression.

  11. Dilligaf

I, too, feel thar Broonie is below his normal, very impressive standard. He was MotM for me at every game at Celtic Park last season. I don`t think CBN is being unfair.

Celtic by numbers analysis of Scott Brown’s declining effectiveness recently, backs up what many of us had suspected.

However ,the optimist in me feels that with a rest, we will once again see the best of the captain. Give whatever injuries he is carrying ,time to heal. Other than the much younger Keiran Teirney , Scott Brown is the player most targeted by the hatchet men.

  13. CELTIC could make a late move to land France Under-20 star Harold Moukoudi.

SunSport understands the Hoops have scouted the Le Havre defender, who would cost at least £5million

    He could be the one….

  14. Anyway, as one who lives 100 miles from Celtic Park, I must be leaving soon to join Sticky and the Emerald Express.

    Cheerio for now,

  15. Next 5 days we badly need 2 x clean sheet victories….hopefully our season will start afresh.

Take young Jack and big Craig out the team for a while.

Get Eddy back playing and Moussa, Leigh and Tom among the goals…

    Fingers xd

    Mon Celtic

  16. CBN, fair enough, you’re the number cruncher not me. On SB, I think we have all noticed a slight drop in effectiveness there. As some state it could be knock hes carrying who knows.I could be the inevitable age factor. I feel we could do more to support the players when they suffer a slight dip in form as we all do.

  17. Players to come through Le Havre’s ranks…

    – Olivier Ntcham

    – N’Golo Kante

    – Riyad Mahrez

    – Paul Pogba

    – Benjamin Mendy

    – Dimitri Payet

Harold Moukoudi could join a long list of gems to come from the French side. However was recently linked with West Ham, alleged fee was £10m and deal ended up falling through.

  18. Gordon

  19. They seek him here, they seek him there

    Those Timmys seek him everywhere

Is he in heaven or is he in hell?

    That damned elusive ‘Central defender’

Tick tock bhoys, no QUALITY signings yet – surprised? No didn’t think you would be.

    Finger oot Celtic FFS

  20. What is the Stars on

Not United Irishman related but Mick Ryans book My Life in The Ira is worth a read

Mick is still going strong at 81,from East Wall in Dublin he was very active in the border campaign of 56 to 62 and gives a fascinating insight into that period

  21. Morning Bhoys

I copied this wee bit from an article on insolvency on the BBC website

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said that reform was needed due to “a minority of directors who deliberately dodge debts by dissolving a company then starting up a near-identical business, with a new name”.

Business minister Kelly Tolhurst said while the “vast majority” of UK companies were run responsibly, some “recent large-scale business failures have shown that a minority of directors are recklessly profiting from dissolved companies”.

    She added: “This can’t continue.”

I wonder if this will apply to companies who go bust and then use the same name as well?

  22. CELTIC BY NUMBERS @ 10:36 AM,

Haven’t read your piece but will do later…

It’s interesting though Personally I thought Scott was not playing that Well, not with the same intensity anyway… as most comments on his performances seemed positive I thought maybe it was just me, or the fact the team as a whole wasn’t klicking.

If he’s carrying a knock we need it sorted, it’s a long season without him at his best or not at all…

    Anybody news on Nir?

    Hail Hail

Playing Callum out of position. That won’t end well.

Playing Boyata at all,not for me.

Hope they both score a hat-trick!

  24. !!BADA BING!! on 26TH AUGUST 2018 11:17 AM

Not a single ‘new boy’ is BR making a point. Canny see Boyata playing.
