Culpable defence, but that’s not all

824

The most pleasing aspect about last night was the manager’s reaction afterwards: “Yet another soft goal”. “We don’t defend a basic ball into the box”.  But, before Cristian Gamboa and Craig Gordon pick up the tab for a bad night in Lithuania, more went wrong.  Much more.

Goals change games and you can be sure games will change when Celtic are defending the way they are right now.  Gamboa losing his man for the goal was in keeping with what we should expect.  Cristian is good going forward but is not the most diligent at the back.  We need a backup, backup, right back.  Right?

Despite all that’s going wrong in defence, I am just as concerned about how the midfield is operating.  Our passing was again poor.  Olivier Ntcham opened the scoring after two minutes and opened the Suduva defence late in the game for Moussa Dembele to shoot wide, but for the rest of the game his passing was as inaccurate as it was against AEK and Rosenborg away.

Callum McGregor, so often a key to unlock packed defences, was ineffective.  I would like to see him play the deep lying playmaker roll over our next three games.  There he can dictate the pace and accuracy of our passing, leaving space for Rogic to play in front of him.

Moussa Dembele is our best striker, but the shape of the team left him isolated and looking just as out of sorts as Odsonne Edouard did at home to AEK.  We have potent strikers who see little of the ball.

On the positive side, Suduva were as poor a team as I can remember playing in recent seasons – and I include the Gibraltareños (as they will be known after March) in that.  We will reach the Europa League group stage.  How effectively we compete there will be determined by the arrivals over the next seven days.

Dinner for four at the Walfrid at Hamilton game on Sunday!

Courtesy of Intelligent Car Leasing, we are raffling a table for four at Sunday’s game against Hamilton Accies in aid of your Foundation.  If like me, you watch football in the bitter cold and wind, even in July and August, this will be a fantastic day our for you and three friends!

It’s a free bar.  And you get the chance to support the Celtic FC Foundation.

To win, contribute to this MyDonate page.  Suggest a minimum of £5 donation, but donate less if you cannot afford that.  Your money does straight to the Foundation as they prepare for the difficult winter period ahead.

Then, please forward your confirmation email to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the words “Central defender” in the SUBJECT line. Competition closes at 11.00 Saturday.  Winner will be informed on Saturday afternoon – so include a phone number if there’s any chance of missing your email (it’s happened).

Good luck, and remember: Central defender.

  1. Bada if that’s the team then it’s a strong team and we should go for goals.

Boyata not for me, but if Brendan thinks he is fit and wanting to play then let’s get behind him.

Get him in the shop windy and he either shapes up or ships out.

  2. If boyata plays he is one mistake away from an absolute sherrikin. Quite possibly before he makes a mistake.

  3. Gooooood Morning CQN – ???????

Will not make the game today, have left it to a late fitness test, and failed ☹️

    Done my back in

So if someone is looking for 2 tickets, and collect in Stirling feel free to make contact.

Now I see we are linked with 2 new Centre halfs, sign both

One is a 20 year old Harold Moukoudi, he will need experience beside him so also sign Samir Memisevic as experience beside him

Sell Bhoyata, and free Compper ( settlement) give time to develop Kris Ajer, who can also step forward to support Broonie in midfield, his natural position ?

    Good luck today Bhoy

    Hail Hail

  4. Celtic By Numbers

Thanks again. Interested you highlight the drop in aerial duel wins; is that 50% drop you show only for the backline? I reckon our midfield is particularly ineffective in the air, atm. Are we vertically out-challenged across the middle of park. Rogic is tallest, right? And he’s not the best heidie winner – neither is our much-loved KT.

  5. I agree with david66, don’t want anyone to play for celtic who does not want to play for celtic, but brendans the boss.hh.

  6. Sorry but Motherwells new player, Bigirimana, has the funniest name since Raphael Shite. Wonder how you pronounce it? I keep reading Big Girl Mania.

was supposed to be on bus & boat through Belfast (driving from Roscommon to Navan to collect my pal, then up to Belfast) but it’s looking dodgy now as apparently they have lowered the numbers allowed on the boat so spaces are at a premium even more than usual.

doesnt look good for the 2 seats for me & my pal.

if anyone on here know’s of a supporters bus travelling through Belfast next Sunday with 2 spare seats give me & shout

WITS – great for me and Wee BGFC to meet you in Dublin on Friday – really enjoyed the chat. Hope Big Declan and the 3 sisters enjoyed their concert :-)

Disaster for us – went to the Academy, and bouncers wouldn’t let us in – ffs!!! Said it was over 18’s only, although we double-checked when we bouight the tickets that it was 14 and over. Bouncers insisted Academy is always over 18 – Wee BGFC was going spare!!!

Anyway – long and short of it was there was no SLF for us after all. Ended up going up to Temple Bar and had a couple of hours chatting to the locals in The Palace Bar. Then up to the airport at midnight and slept on the floor – pretty knackered yesterday.

So – SLF was a pain, but enjoyed everything else.

Very impressed with your seemingly endless variety of descriptors for Govanhill. Keep on keeping on! HH

  15. BMCUW @ 11:28 AM,

‘Playing Callum out of position. That won’t end well.’

Well, if he’s playing beside Brownie, the thought passed my mind… light weight? Possibly but think it could be a solution, we need options there – we have options in front of them.

He’s never failed to step up yet… so would like to see him take his chance…

    Hail Hail
