Culpable defence, but that’s not all

824

The most pleasing aspect about last night was the manager’s reaction afterwards: “Yet another soft goal”. “We don’t defend a basic ball into the box”.  But, before Cristian Gamboa and Craig Gordon pick up the tab for a bad night in Lithuania, more went wrong.  Much more.

Goals change games and you can be sure games will change when Celtic are defending the way they are right now.  Gamboa losing his man for the goal was in keeping with what we should expect.  Cristian is good going forward but is not the most diligent at the back.  We need a backup, backup, right back.  Right?

Despite all that’s going wrong in defence, I am just as concerned about how the midfield is operating.  Our passing was again poor.  Olivier Ntcham opened the scoring after two minutes and opened the Suduva defence late in the game for Moussa Dembele to shoot wide, but for the rest of the game his passing was as inaccurate as it was against AEK and Rosenborg away.

Callum McGregor, so often a key to unlock packed defences, was ineffective.  I would like to see him play the deep lying playmaker roll over our next three games.  There he can dictate the pace and accuracy of our passing, leaving space for Rogic to play in front of him.

Moussa Dembele is our best striker, but the shape of the team left him isolated and looking just as out of sorts as Odsonne Edouard did at home to AEK.  We have potent strikers who see little of the ball.

On the positive side, Suduva were as poor a team as I can remember playing in recent seasons – and I include the Gibraltareños (as they will be known after March) in that.  We will reach the Europa League group stage.  How effectively we compete there will be determined by the arrivals over the next seven days.

  1. what id give for a defence, featuring bobby Murdoch billy mcneil and john clark, especially john clark, he could read into a game, knew when to step forward or step back or maybe im just a sentimental old git.hh.

Anyone remember Gerrardiola complaining about artificial pitches when he was in America? Or did he not have someone telling him what to say when he was there?

Maybe he was too busy watching “Rangers” games and noting all the bad decisions that were going against them…..

  3. Five minutes at Lennoxtown and John Terry would have those wandering minstrels of a defence sorted, disciplined and focussed.

That’s if he could hear himself think above the cacophony of hands wringing and tuts of disapproval.

The Leigh Griffiths Charcater Assassination spreadsheets will be getting dug out the hard-drives.

  4. Love him or hate him I do think we miss Nir Bitton bringing the ball out of defence and into attack.

The problem with our recent performances against packed defences is fannying about at the back, overpassing the ball, and allowing the opposition to regroup instead of getting the ball forward quickly and hurting them before they can regroup.

Aye I know ‘Bitton has become a better player in his absence.’ ?

  5. MIKE IN TORONTO hope you and seamus are well, interesting reading your comments on mlk, don’t know if this is true, but I think I read something years ago about mlk,s father not been too impressed about the friendship between jfk and mlk, because of his religious affiliation whats your take on it.hh.

  6. Can you imagine Terry an Griff out on the town together. I’m sure they’re both reformed characters now though.

  7. OGLACH,

He/she who is without sin cast the first stone. Do you think all Celtic players have been angels and saints during their time with us? I’m not condoning lack of moral fortitude but if we picked a football team because of people’s moral fibre I think we’d be watching five a side.

If Celtic are at the football poker table they may just be playing a blinder. Everybody writing them off as holding a bad hand. A couple of good signings already lined up (hopefully) and rolled out with perfect timing. Keep the faith, I honestly believe the way we dealt with Hibs was wrong and the way we dealt with Aberdeen was right. Smokescreen perhaps and big announcements to come…

Something else I would just like to share, when we show an interest in buying players many come on here and shares opinion on who would be a good move and those who wouldn’t.

Remember the very players we may be trying to bring in might just be reading the comments and feel aggrieved that they are written off before kicking a ball.

No argument there but lets start by getting rid of the oft used term ” more than a just a club / football team”

    Obviously we are not.

  12. Please, please don’t listen or be bothered what the media say about Celtic. I couldn’t care less. When I can’t see the games on the television I listen on the radio. But at the same time I watch all the match updates on here just to be sure. GG for example.

Forget the media. We can trust each other.

  13. PO quiz. Imagine that it is 2018 Paulo Di Canio is 25 and we are in with a chance of signing him and If we all knew he was a fully paid up member of the fascist party, salutes and all – would you be happy signing him?

Moi religious ??? I haven’t been inside a catholic church in a decade let alone one of another denomination. No what I am referring to is morals – you know the BS we keep hearing about that allegedly differentiates us from THEM. Guess that is all B/S.

  20. Oglach, sorry if I got you wrong. but we are different from them, in my experience, vastly different, from them, their fans.

BTW my fag packet calculations of signing John Terry on £70k per week from now until May next year comes to about £2.5 million. Doable and could be recouped by a good run in EL.

why £70k a week.where did you get that fig from.he is currently earning heehaw .so £20k a week would look quite nice thank you.

however if he wants the seventy then no ta.what about robert huth.??same for him ,on the dole at present i think.

Just back from a date with scampi and chips.

I agree wholeheartedly ,I would like to see McCann blacklisted for loans of our players. Don’t know if we tried anyone else or what the deal would be regarding % of wages paid ,which I suppose might also have come into it.

    Cheers.

I also thought RUGGYMAN’S post was excellent.

I have been saying for years that the Guardiola style was obsolete and easy to counter.

He may have won the EPL with a very expensive squad but the coaching in that league is far from the highest level.

What has he achieved in Europe in last 6 years with very expensive squads at Barca,Munich and City?

He varied it a little at City this past season so maybe he is recognizing the need to vary the play.

Zidane won the most important trophy 4 years in a row with a varied and pragmatic approach to individual games.

  28. Kev I agree ,time these director’s were shown the door at Celtic Park, they want us the fan’s,to buy season tickets , merchandise etc ,which we step up to the plate and do,and what do we get in return, not much ie regarding quality players being signed,as for Corkceltic guy our club stagnate with supporters like him,my hope before it gets to late, that there is a few good Celtic Men and Supporters on the board, who can challenge Desmond and Lawell, and take charge of our Club, which can only be good for all Celtic Supporters.
