Cup draw is perfect for Celtic

226

Celtic face either Aberdeen or Newco in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 13 or 14 April.  Both potential opponents must have developed a nervous disposition at facing Celtic at Hampden recently, such as been the imperious form of the champions.  This draw is perfect for Celtic.

In the event they overcome Aberdeen in the quarter-final, Steven Gerrard’s men have a punishing schedule before the semi: Hibs (a), Aberdeen (h), Kilmarnock (h), Celtic (a), Hearts (h), Motherwell (a).  That’s each of the other top six teams in succession, followed by a trip to Fir Park, where they dropped points earlier this season.  If Gerrard has hopes of winning the Cup, he would have wanted Celtic at the end of the season, when he would be able to rest some legs.

On Sunday Derek McInnes all but accepted Aberdeen were out of the title race.  They are now 16 points off the pace, although they have an easier run immediately before the semi-final date, facing Celtic (a), Newco (a), Livingston (h), Hearts (a), Motherwell (h) and Dundee (a).  Their form has dropped off a cliff and were it not for their ability to repeatedly mug Newco in Glasgow this season, they would have little hope of reaching the semi.

Celtic have one game fewer than Aberdeen and Newco (who have a replay), and face Aberdeen (h), Dundee (a), Newco (h), St Mirren (a) and Livingston (h).  By the semi-final we should have McGregor, Christie, Rogic, Ntcham and Benkovic back.  We will be as ready as we can be.

I’m still working on my nervous disposition when facing Inverness in the Scottish Cup, but that’s for another day.

Fan a tic- he sounds like a frustrated hack, who phones Clyde(i know i know),and is majorly verbose in his own verbosity…..

  2. Smsm trying to start some virtual bidding war for a player who would get sent off every game if he played for any other team in the world. Oh, and can’t score against anyone decent. Desperate stuff.

  3. The progress/ improvements around celtic park have made a difference to the look of the place, but truth be told not much has improved for the regular supporters.

A hotel, bar, cafe, museum etc would certainly add to what stands there at the moment. As would some type of outdoor and indoor fanzone dotted around the stadium. if there turns a profit and offer more to supporters its a win, win.

  4. Is there any chance Aberdeen have given up on top two in the League; feel their best bet is the Cup and , as a result, will treat Saturday`s games as being less important than the Tuesday game against Sevco?

  5. Any actually amazed at the figures being quoted in the Scottish media about Morelos transfer value?.

At least 20 million ,comparable to Dembele we are told?….

Dembele was signed using a cross border loophole at a fraction of his then current value.

Morelos was signed for his full market value [around 1 million?] and does not really have much credentials on top of that in the past 2 years unless of course you include his goals against Hamilton and Dundee.

Dembele had a very good disciplinary record.Morelos is terrible and infact a pretty alarming flaw.

How many goals has Morelos scored against Celtic?

    How many champions league goals?

How many goals against top level Euro opposition?

All things considered they will be lucky to get 6 or 7 million for the columbian and that will turn to be the biggest cash transfer income of their short history.

I would be amazed if they get anything close to 20 million and believe me if an offer comes in close to 7 million the player and his agent will be demanding a move.

Political I can google faster than you coming soon ?

    Sorry it’s here already ?

  7. Bet Dortmund wished they hadn’t waited til summer to swoop for Morelos.

They might have had a chance tonight….

Not 100% but don’t think he is cup tied for this competition….lol

  8. Amazing, first free kick in the Dortmund v Tottenham match after 17 mins, other than offsides.

  9. We ‘can’t compete’ in Europe but Ajax can tear Real Madrid apart in the last 16. Yeah, ok.

I had an instructive reminder of late on this issue. After NFL had left Hibs, my hibbee colleague was bemoaning his loss. ‘Good riddance to bad rubbish’ came the retort from the Ayr United fan sitting across from us. Once again highlighted the extent of the ‘gaslighting’ that NFL and ‘Brownie’ have been the subject of for years now. (Took me till recently to stop my dad referring to SB as ‘a bit of a thug’ Cos it’s what the Herald and Shortbread has told him for years)

Similar experience last Wednesday morning in work.

A lassie in the office (supposed Machester United fan) asked what I thought about our new manager.

She said “I mean, is he not just mental?!?!” – she didn’t mean mentally ill.

I said “If you mean ‘hasn’t he had mental health issues?’, then yes, he has suffered from depression from time to time, as have I” – she shut up.

I saw instant bitterness in her face, though – she’s never met the guy; her only knowledge is through the years of drip-feed. Every picture in the media is of him either ‘snarling’ or pointing at his two temples in an apparent “I’m mad in the head” pose.

The consistency of presentation of his media image across a number of outlets across many years is no coincidence – it has clearly had the desired effect. He is regarded by many as a snarling mad-man – a shameful and concerted effort to marginalise the man, and it has had real physical, and possibly mental health, impacts. Trully shameful.

PS – good research discussed on the radio this morning re: how sadness can do actual, physically harm to your heart :-(

  11. Also listened to the Joe Ledley interview and was a bit taken aback by the apparent drinkin culture at the club when Lenny was manager last time

One player (he wouldnt say who) missed the league game after the Karangandy match because he was suffering from a two day hangover… ffs

I would be behind Lenny getting the job on a permanent basis but this is the sort of thing that you just cant do anymore

24 hour athletes is what Rodgers demanded and, no matter what you think of him, this is something we must continue to demand

Ref the heart stuff, Scotland leads the way in this….through the work of a Romanian professor up at Aberdeen.

Commonly known as broken heart syndrome, previously often misdiagnosed as a heart attack. Also known as takotsubo Syndrome, names after a pot Japanese fishermen use to capture octopus… as the shape of the heart resembles the pot.

I had the same thoughts after listening to Mulgrew telling story about drinking beer after beating Barcelona. The Board need to ensure that the sports science and conditioning side of things are at the highest levels. It needs to be non negotiable for any Manager going forward.

We need to really move up a gear regarding fan facilities at CP.

Everything is great if you can afford the free pie seats and hospitality but the offer to the rest of the support is very poor.

We have spent money on a fancy semi-synthetic pitch.

We have spent money on some fancy disco lights.

We have spent big money on the CEO’s ego.

Consequently we can spend some serious money on improving the fan experience.

£10mill on a big hospitality unit behind the JS stand would bring in an extra £3mill pa £100K per game matchday revenue — 50% food and 50% drink?

Extra 10K pints served every game — credible number?

  17. Drinking culture at CP — I am still haunted by the stories floating about regarding our preparations for the May 2011 game with ICT away.

Not our finest hour even if the ref was a homer and some of the ICT stats would have shocked an EG athletics coach circa 1988.

What is the story regarding drugs testing in the SPL?

  18. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Ajax outstanding. Really confident, fast-paced, fearless football. Shades of the 94-95 team. Ramos getting that booking was really stupid.

  19. Imo, the very first thing that should be installed is hot water in the toilets. Besides that, the paper towels ought to be replenished constantly.

After that, the food and drink MUST be improved. For years, it has been too expensive and poor fare.

Then thought ought to be given to improving the whole match day experience for everybody.

Are the red crosses players who don’t get a game, or who are returning to parent clubs or what? (I’m not au fait with that team’s pool machinations).

Also Terje Vigen, re Compper…might he be a ‘new signing’ under NL, as rumours were that it wasn’t his on-field ball skills BR took issue with?

  22. JAMESGANG,

I often feel that Celtic treat the ordinary supporter like an animal. The facilities are not really 20th Century never mind the 21st….

Having said that, I well remember the “toilet” in the middle of the old Jungle. Mind you, that would have us closed down now.
