Curse of the prodigy: Dembele, Feruz, Doak, Morrison, Hepburn

323

After ten substitute appearances, Karamoko Dembele joins a long list of other prodigies, released by Celtic (or a later club) without achieving their hoped-for level.  Unlike many of the others, Karamoko stayed, hoping to make the breakthrough here, but despite attracting global attention as a 15-year-old and making his debut soon after turning 16, it looks likely the London-born player is set for a career as a jobbing player.

Islam Feruz is just seven years older than Dembele.  Chelsea beat off a host of competitors to sign him when he left the Celtic structure at 16.  A career totalling 20 appearances ended five years ago with a loan spell at Swindon, remembered mostly for his conviction for driving his Porsche while disqualified.

The body of evidence grows that a player’s potential cannot be reliably assured I his mid-teens.  Ben Doak (16), who made his Celtic debut, played in that memorable 3-0 win over Newco, then signed for Liverpool, has it all to prove.

Barry Hepburn, now 18, who left Celtic for Bayern Munich two years ago, or Liam Morrison, who we lost to the same club a year earlier, have it all to prove in Germany.  Morrison has made just four appearances for the Reserves in three years since joining Bayern, two from the bench.  Hepburn has made the Reserves’ bench only once in two years, but was unused.

Football is absolutely brutal when it comes to inflating and ending the hopes of young talent.  A tiny percentage of those considered near certain to make it, actually do.  No judgement on Doak, Morrison or Hepburn.  They would have gone with dreams of Champions League glory and no doubt an unbelievable wage.  Their next contract offer may be less attractive.

Regarding P67’s leader – and subsequent criticism of Celtic’s youth academy.

    ——————

    exactly.

I happen to believe that the Celtic Academy is up there with the best in the UK. As is in my humble opinion the scouting system and the data analysis.

Producing several top level footballers, who go on to have International and European careers.

Some attract huge record breaking transfer fees (McGeady, Teirney).

Others come from other teams and make us a mint (Odsonne Moussa)

And others stay around break into the team, and become celtic captains, play hundreds of games, and win barrowloads of medals (McManus mcGregor). a cost avoidance if you will. How much to buy callum now if he was playing elsewhere ?

Pre pandemic there was an excellent walk through video of Lennoxtown, showing trainng, the analytics department (staffed by 6 people), NFL looking at data with the coaches, the sports science department, the cafeteria, the meal planning and onto the actual training grounds.

Beyond that several dozen players have made it in the game of football, sure not at celtic, bt they went on to have careers.

I often feel the agenda from some is to slag everything, even when the kpis are being met, and the products being produced (players + trophies + fees), what other measurment of success can be applied.

I would recommend “This is how it feels to be Celtic” book.

The chapters from Callum and Keiran are really insightful to what they had to go through to make it. Huge sacrificies from family . 5am starts, long long days with multiple training sessions and or evening games.

Hell they even enjoyed the schooling.

But then both said, they worked hard, learned things, got better, but even so there were players in every year that were even better and didnt get the breaks.

Keiran said he got lucky that 2 players in front of him got injured or he would have been no where near the first team. Callum i n turn thought he was on the way out when loaned to Notts County, and he was hopeful to make an impression there that they would give him a contract just as much as hoping that celtic took him back

Its all just a numbers game, 1 in a 1000 make it.

That a guy on here continually slags it all of looking for the mythical “improvement” well it is just pathetic.

  3. I remember Gary Lineker and Ian Wright discussing this on Match of the Day and both agreed that more often than not being the right player in the right place at the right time was at least as important than the balance of skill. ie a lot of very good players don’t make it while quite good players do make it.

  5. Re: hickey being sold to Brentford. Celtic will pick up 5% of the overall sale because we get a development payment on basis he came through our academy and is under 23. When he left celtic a 30% sell on was put in place.

Now some folk are saying hearts have a sell on clause in the deal and celtic won’t get any more money for him. Sorry but there is no way celtic are not getting their 30% cut from hearts slice of the pie. Celtic will be due 30% of everything hearts earn be it from the initial sell on or from subsequent sell ons. If hearts benefit then celtic in turn benefit but to a lessor degree. Clubs like celtic are not gonna let other clubs structure deals in ways that does not rewarded them.

Real serious football clubs recruit players who quickly find their way onto the pitch.

Whereas fake pretend at it football clubs recruit bus loads of players who are then loaned out with the majority of these players never kicking a first team ball.

At one point before and during the Ronny era Celtic recruited 60 players within a four year period.

It smells a bit like racketeering.

How many layers of corruption will Celtic fans endure before they say ENOUGH?

Maybe its already too late for that?

When Celtic fans refer to the “Irish Republican Army” as “TERRORIST’S” then it looks like Celtic fans have been well and truly and utterly brainwashed since 1994.

  8. Every player that makes the game needs a bit of luck as a kid, problem is you can’t give them all a chance and chances will often come and go quickly. Few kids are earmarked as dead certs.

Given the stats regards the low numbers of kids that make the grade is it any surprise that they often pick the big pay days with just as much chance of getting a a breakthrough at the mega rich clubs. In fact they may have a better chance of staying in the game if dropping down likely to from these clubs

Players playing in top teams — they have to come from somewhere.

I think we are performing poorly at the moment.

We have issues with finding talent in the first place.

Quite long term in that players have been advised to give us a miss for 1st team action.

Then we have had a sizest streak in our youths — too small at age 12 now beat it.

Now we have the TFOD2.1 working the youth market very hard at every level because they were / are skint — desperadoes but hard working desperadoes.

Then we have the issue of talent development at 16 – 20.

We seem to have issues with complacency / fitting in at StN’s.

Consequently the recent cohorts have not been great — leaving for the SCh / LofI / Div2 at 21.

Plus even the semi finished talent that we bring in from outside at 16 / 17 from outside is leaving either in a poor condition or as soon as they can — not good.

So to me we are in a poor place with weak coaching / bad attitudes / lack of professionalism.

Comment on KDS last month put us in a poor light compared to our friends in Govan.

One data point many will shout — but the consensus on the big community that is KDS was that this was true for now and had been true for some time and had been noticed by quite a few apart from our boardroom.

That points to lack of leadership and direction from the coaching staff — TMcI comes across as trying to be their best pal not their mentor and coach.

All I can offer is my related experience — every year at the egg chasing there would be a new group of plooky youths giving it large about how they were going to tear it up in the seniors,

For too many after a couple of months in they were running about looking for support as that bad man in the opposition team had told them that if they tried to be fancy / showed a step one more time they would rip their head of and defecate in the resulting orifice.

They didn’t know what that means but it sounded sore and they don’t want the ball anymore as they have just had their hair cut — growing up can be tough.

Generally there is an attitude locally that pro youth is where it is at and that many consider it to be a goal in itself rather than the start of a very fruitful journey — the coulda / woulda / shoulda element to WCS life is now tempered by the thought that at least they had made it to a wear a big team jersey before their focus diminished and they had led themselves astray.

Consequently I think that we are very poor at the moment regarding youth development.

Scotland has its issues but we are behind the pack.

Looking for teams that have worked it out — Southampton in the noughties were good.

Stocked the team with as much talent as they could find — no limits.

Not two potential stars surrounded by stiffs — Spurs style.

Some of the London academies look to be good.

Lots of people see football as a way forward.

    Not so much up here.

You could blame TB / GB for taking the hungry edge away.

I would be amazed if any professional club sold a player with a resale % on initial sale as it would simply enourage the buying club sell the player on the cheap with a higher % sell on. Effectively cutting out previously club % from the overall fee received.

I would expect celtic like other clubs to simply place a % on all profit received for the player regardless of when they money comes in. Clubs like celtic are not so stupid that they would cut themselves out of the mix or trust that other clubs would not attempt to cut them out. Hearts benefit, we benefit if not then someone at celtic needs their balls booted. Ps the 5 % is assured as its part of eufa consolidation payment for young players being transferred under 23 years old.

Hiding behind the words of a plooky youth — not good.

He would have made it no matter who was in the squad.

just a case of he doesn’t know anything different.

  22. I will try again, only once for you, KIERAN himself said he got a lucky break that he got into the team quicker than he thought was possible because other players got injured, and he fully expected they would be back in the team when fit.

He got the chance, took it, retained his place for sometime, but it surprised him some that the manger kept picking him ahead of internationalist.

He thought in that season he might get some subs appearances and a handful of games. He ended up playing 30 or so.

  23. I had to re-read that.

Not content with the actual player himself making statments, our hero is now a plooky youth , loacking intelligence.
