Curse of the prodigy: Dembele, Feruz, Doak, Morrison, Hepburn

323

After ten substitute appearances, Karamoko Dembele joins a long list of other prodigies, released by Celtic (or a later club) without achieving their hoped-for level.  Unlike many of the others, Karamoko stayed, hoping to make the breakthrough here, but despite attracting global attention as a 15-year-old and making his debut soon after turning 16, it looks likely the London-born player is set for a career as a jobbing player.

Islam Feruz is just seven years older than Dembele.  Chelsea beat off a host of competitors to sign him when he left the Celtic structure at 16.  A career totalling 20 appearances ended five years ago with a loan spell at Swindon, remembered mostly for his conviction for driving his Porsche while disqualified.

The body of evidence grows that a player’s potential cannot be reliably assured I his mid-teens.  Ben Doak (16), who made his Celtic debut, played in that memorable 3-0 win over Newco, then signed for Liverpool, has it all to prove.

Barry Hepburn, now 18, who left Celtic for Bayern Munich two years ago, or Liam Morrison, who we lost to the same club a year earlier, have it all to prove in Germany.  Morrison has made just four appearances for the Reserves in three years since joining Bayern, two from the bench.  Hepburn has made the Reserves’ bench only once in two years, but was unused.

Football is absolutely brutal when it comes to inflating and ending the hopes of young talent.  A tiny percentage of those considered near certain to make it, actually do.  No judgement on Doak, Morrison or Hepburn.  They would have gone with dreams of Champions League glory and no doubt an unbelievable wage.  Their next contract offer may be less attractive.

You will find that the John Deere tournament is always short of the big guns i think most are over in Scotland to get some practice on the Links.Although winning the John Deere gets you into the Open automatically.

    Re John Park –

My dad knew him and when my dad passed away Park was on his way to China with Lawell.

Lawell saw JP was a bit down and asked him what was wrong and he told him about my dad, who was a big Celtic fan (and he also wasn’t looking forward to going to China).

Lawell picked up the phone and phoned Celtic park and we got a massive bunch of flowers delivered, sent from all at CFC.

    I’ll never forget that 👍🏼

    What is the Starz

Nope, just five more than any club of equivalence

Loans from last season merely rubber stamped, a Bosman goalie and a hothead previously unknown Argie. Not shifted a single bit of deadwood either

    Groundhog Day.

    Yawn.

What you won’t read anytime soon.

Release clauses are inserted into contracts for a reason.

If the clause is activated, the player is … er … released.

Add ons, top ups – the usual stuff when negotiating a fee with a buying club?

    Not factors.

The clause is negotiated with the player without a buyer in sight.

Activation of a release clause is a major problem for the releasing club.

Their control of the narrative, timing and the money goes out the window.

Joe Aribo was signed on a four year contract three years ago.

    The fee was £300k.

He has not signed a new contract since.

He’s on the same chicken 5h1t basic now as he was 3 years ago.

Sevco and Sly Sports have spun £10m.

The others will line up behind that number.

    Draw your own conclusions.

    Paul

There is nothing doomed about the future careers of these players. There is nothing lesser about their prospects by going elsewhere.

If the hint is that they would be better off staying at Celtic, there is little evidence to support that. We may as well hint that they would be better signing for United or Motherwell or the Dons since they will get more Senior experience at an earlier age.

Ange obviously wanted Doak and Dembele to stay, as he tried to encourage them with game time. It does not serve us well to adopt a Fox & Grapes attitude towards the fact that they left.

The truth is that it is hard to make it all over. There are no guarantees that starting at a lesser team increases your chances significantly of making it to a top team.

    ————————

There are very few guarantees in life at all, but we must look for increasing the probability.

I spoke to an SFA coach, and son of an ex Celt who told me that most of the top players have played over 100 first team games by the time they hit 20 (or possibly 21).

Going by that info, going to a lesser team will not guarantee you making it with a better team but may improve your chances of making it to a top team – or at least should make you a better player which is what it’s all about.

    Transfer style guide

    (15) Clubs unwilling to up their bid to meet the perfectly reasonable fee placed on a player by Rainjurz FC must be strongly condemned. All stories of this nature must include the words/terms ‘insulting’ ‘laughably derisory bid’ ‘on the cheap’ ‘deliberate attempt to unsettle’ and ‘outrageously low offer’.

  7. The huns resigning Davis and Arfield while selling Aribo is clearly to our advantage. If we were about to lose our best midfielder while resigning dad’s army, it would be reported in a much different manner.

  8. If sevco sell aribo, they will make it known they want Ferguson from Aberdeen , pitch a low bid in and unsettle Aberdeen, he will end up there, he is a thug who scores penalties, perfect for them

Jannik Sinner has to be the first ginger Italian I’ve ever seen. Surely.

    ………………………

Back in the 1970’s in Glasgow, I had a work colleague who was Italian ( Giovanni/John) and who had Red Hair.

I also had a very close friend until recent years ( Alfonso….ALFIE), who had Light Brown hair, BUT who showed me old Photos of himself as a young Scots/Italian with RED Hair.

He told me that MANY Italians had Red Hair, so it was apparently quite common.

My old mate ALFIE has the BIGGEST pair of Hands Ive ever seen…He was/is Celtic mad, but was hopeless at Football, except when he played in Goals.

His wife always joked that she only married him because of his Big Hands !

Boris is a lying toerag – but we knew that

    ………………

    Correct GENE.

In my own opinion, I couldnt believe that so many Voters were taken in by by Boris Johnston who ( To ME), was quite clearly a BAMPOT before he became close to being PM.

I have NO time for Tory MPs, Ministers etc, but Rishi Sunak in particular mostly came across as am INTELLIGENT Guy, and I have often wondered WHY Ministers like Sunak continually back a Chump like Boris Johnson ?

I realise that some Tory Ministers/MPs etc, might be intelligent no matter what I think of them…but Boris Johnston was ALREADY a Joke Figure whenever he appeared on TV Shows before becoming Leader of the Tories.

I suspect any intelligent Tory Ministers, backed Johnson in recent years just to keep their Jobs.

  16. The tory right backed Johnston to get brexit done, his stunts driving tractors through walls to reinforce this appealed to much of England, the unresolved issue of no border on the island of Ireland should have stopped brexit in its tracks, it didn’t because he wasn’t forced to address it before signing the withdrawal agreement.

Brexit continues to be an utter mess, Johnston is now past his usefulness to the tory right but he has dug his heels in and it will require a change in tory rules to remove him. This while the people struggle with inflation pay erosion and the cost of living.

One thing for sure Johnston sunak Rees mogg etc will not be struggling with any costs of living.

Good morning all from Govanhill. I see that old Saltmarket smoothie is up and about. 👍

    …………….

Excuse me young fella, I have NEVER been ” Smooth”…Ive always been as ” ROUGH as Feck”.

Back in the 1980’s I lived with a Burd who was quite ” Posh”, even my DA was surprised by our relationship and IMMEDIATELY after meeting Her for the 1st time my DA said to me….” Jimmy son that Burd is too RICH for you” !

She would sometimes call me her…Bit of ROUGH”.

During our 7 months of living together. She BINNED me after I got lifted by the Polis for fighting with 2 off duty Sailors one night on Sauchiehall street.

When I got out the Cells the next morning and went home to her….she was treating my ” Cuts and Grazes” and crying. She then came out with a quote that STILL makes me laugh all these years later…..

    She said whilst sobbing….

” I cant believe you James….publicly BRAWLING in the STREET” ?

I then reminded her, that I was ” Her bit of ROUGH”….what did she expect as I was DEFENDING HER Honour after after these Two Sailor Chumps had insulted her.

They were both in PLAIN Clothes, and I didnt find out til the next morning that they were in fact 2 Off duty Sailors…it was the Polis that told me the next morning when the the Polis were releasin me, whilst they were both STILL locked up…apparently they were a bit abusive to the Polis during them being arrested.

As long as Johnson keeps funnelling the cash into tory/donors/establishment trousers, he would never be removed. That now seems to be on a shoogly peg.

Starmer is waiting in the wings, cos IMHO, he has promised the above he will not rock the boat! IMHO of course.

  25. FSC @ 9.00

KS is not going to rock the boat …

Currently the UK / Westminster — and the Holyrood subset — are doing triple salkos and double somersaults due to a complete focus on identity and grievance.

The Tories / right wing media = focused all there bile on the EU / Brussels.

The Nats / local compliant media = focus all their bile on Westminster / English.

There are currently no grown ups in the room.

With BoJo they are on the outside looking in

With Not Jacinda the cult either does what it is told or gets them deported — SaSm to the US.

BoJo with pincher / Not Jacinda / Bunter with Grady = both groups playing the same game.

The only difference being that Bunter was caught on tape while BoJo was skewered by an old establishment hand playing the old establishment game.

Brexit is and will continue to be a disaster.

Unfortunately ScExit will be an even bigger disaster.

Regarding the 6 county protocol — BoJo has made a total erse of this.

Either that or he has been forced in the face of big power reality to accept the unacceptable.

It must have been some barrel if BoJo knowingly signed up to what we now have.

Either that or he couldn’t be bothered to put in the effort and his plan was always the lazy way out / toddler style — wait until things had settled down and then cause a scene

The border should be in the Irish sea — 26 counties to the 26 state EU.

Not in the North Channel between the 6 counties and GB.

The EU were ready for this — customs posts were planned for Cork and DL.

That they didn’t need top was done to BoJo — stupidity vs laziness — discuss.

The AH Empire ultimatums to Serbia in 1914 were less onerous that what is now on offer to the UK.

Hopefully it won’t end in the same way.

The Establishment want BoJo out as Brexit is a disaster that is only being hidden from public view by CoViD19 and the war in Ukraine.

Unfortunately BoJo has marched the plebs up to the top of the hill and they won’t give up their position easily — what a total shambles to slate on man’s ego.
