Curse of the prodigy: Dembele, Feruz, Doak, Morrison, Hepburn

323

After ten substitute appearances, Karamoko Dembele joins a long list of other prodigies, released by Celtic (or a later club) without achieving their hoped-for level.  Unlike many of the others, Karamoko stayed, hoping to make the breakthrough here, but despite attracting global attention as a 15-year-old and making his debut soon after turning 16, it looks likely the London-born player is set for a career as a jobbing player.

Islam Feruz is just seven years older than Dembele.  Chelsea beat off a host of competitors to sign him when he left the Celtic structure at 16.  A career totalling 20 appearances ended five years ago with a loan spell at Swindon, remembered mostly for his conviction for driving his Porsche while disqualified.

The body of evidence grows that a player’s potential cannot be reliably assured I his mid-teens.  Ben Doak (16), who made his Celtic debut, played in that memorable 3-0 win over Newco, then signed for Liverpool, has it all to prove.

Barry Hepburn, now 18, who left Celtic for Bayern Munich two years ago, or Liam Morrison, who we lost to the same club a year earlier, have it all to prove in Germany.  Morrison has made just four appearances for the Reserves in three years since joining Bayern, two from the bench.  Hepburn has made the Reserves’ bench only once in two years, but was unused.

Football is absolutely brutal when it comes to inflating and ending the hopes of young talent.  A tiny percentage of those considered near certain to make it, actually do.  No judgement on Doak, Morrison or Hepburn.  They would have gone with dreams of Champions League glory and no doubt an unbelievable wage.  Their next contract offer may be less attractive.

EU membership and growth — interesting.

Raising wage rates in the poorest areas by lowering them in the richer areas?

Not exactly lowering per se but reducing the number of jobs that pay higher rates.

Big Auto being a very good example of how all this worked out in practice.

Cheerio Linwood — hello Spain eventually / Cheerio Ryton — hello Slovakia.

Working class being reduced to “minimum” wage jobs — not good.

At least TB codified what the minimum wage was.

The UK wasn’t a poor country by European standards in 1972.

Maggie made large parts of it poor by her mentalist economic self harm polices in 79-83.

    26 counties — 1972 / poor — don’t go there.

50 years of freedom and still skint / backward / eating sorry exporting their children.

50 years in the EU — reduced to being a tax haven stealing bread out of poor children in the US.

Helps with the house prices in South Dublin so it can’t be all bad.

So in answer to your basic question — not socialism in one country.

But socialism in any country at all — priorities will have to be made.

    Almost unprecedented.

Civil service (like them or not) have an unwritten code of c.200 years

In the job – keep mouth shut publicly

After 40 years – deliver a one time only valedictory which politely hints at your true feelings (even that not fully public).

Then retire and keep mouth shut publicly.

Simon MacDonald’s “you’re a liar” sketch shows how badly broken the system is.

I checked the ticket website immediately after reading your post yesterday. Not to say I havent been checking the website, with a view to going to at least one of the two friendlies. Priority is one thing, but a priori ty is something else. Not sure we have got this right, could be missing a trick here, but as my response to the Huddle suggests, no easy way around it. Better look out that Norwich scarf!

  4. Log on.

Literally, urine being pumped out by the Mad One at an alarming rate.

    Log off.

The establishment want BoJo out — I think the EU are playing hardball and saying that they cannot negotiate with him as he is a snider par excellence.

Get rid of BoJo and they will start to play ball.

That is all the encouragement that the City / Treasury / Business need.

As you note SMcD’s intervention was as unexpected as it was telling.

Didn’t even wait for the inquiry to get his story out.

Maybe it was the failure of previous enquiries that made him do it.

Plus Frosty jumping ship suggests that the Brexit drys are unhappy at BoJo shaking the money tree a bit too vigorously.

  6. No idea if the story Jackson is spouting today about Celtic giving Sousa an ultimatum is true ,but incredibly similar to my post the other day from Turkey, that Fenerbache most certainly have.

You would think Keith is just reading Sports headlines from a teleprinter, and making his version.

    Shirley not

    🇦🇷 | Alexandro Bernabei

Think it was against Raith Rovers in the League Cup last September that we had a cheap ticket policy, £10 for adults and £5 youngsters if I remember rightly. Got a half decent crowd and good atmosphere too, Disco lights included. MIght have been the way to go for the friendlies, absent the lights mid summer of course.

CELTIC MAC on 6TH JULY 2022 11:10 AM

    lets all do the huddle

Thanks for that! Difficult to see a way around it, short of some kind of activation process, or ticket resale system.

My CSC asked if anyone was interested in the friendlies, if there was sufficient numbers they would run a bus.

My reply was nope don’t do friendlies even if it’s on the season ticket, would rather spend the day in the pub🍻😂

  12. prestonpans bhoys

Thing is you can spend every day in the pub, but you cant see the Celtic every day!

Very true but no mechanism exists for anything else since swipe cards were introduced. We used to get paper tickets in the past and I would offer them free on here., just needed a postal address and whoosh off it went

  14. I bought three tickets for Blackburn game, to go with my two daughters. In 409 row bb, , limited view.

Can anyone tell me how bad a view it will be. BTW only tickets we could buy together.
