Cutting the cord: Sky are fostering their own downfall

583

Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes.  In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.

Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord.  A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming.  More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.

UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content.  A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:

BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market

Within this market there are winners and losers.  The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies.  The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.

Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.

I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.

Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago.  That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose.  The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story?  Dave King, or through his PR company?

depending on where I am, I sometimes watch the game through my ipad and apple TV …. for some reason, I dont find the picture quality great …

dont know why this is so, as when I watch the games on the ipad, the picture is good, and it is a good new tv ….

  2. The Premium picture is good however the buffering is still a pest it’s all down to your broadband, if you have a decent broadband then it makes very little difference if it’s premium or not.

    Inchture bhoy ….

I should point out that I am no computer expert, so it is entirely possible that I dont have it set up optimally …. for example, I started watching a film on the dvd the other night … last night, I went to watch the end of the film, but the DVD player kept saying ‘no disc’ … ended up watching it on the computer!

so, take my ‘tech’ comments with a grain of salt!

    Mr pastry,

it would be great to go it alone on a TV deal, or even expanding CTV,and I would be up for that,

As for what the eleven premiership teams think I personally don’t care, they have used us as a cash cow for far to long,

St Kessog’s was a bloomin’ good school.

On the ole facebook there’s a great collection of pictures going back over the years, including one with Tommy Burns.

I think the Celtic goalie coach Stevie Woods is married to a St Kessog’s teacher.

  9. Celtic and Rangers have enquired about Hibernian’s Scott Allan – although neither Glasgow club has made an offer for the midfielder.

Allan moved to Easter Road in July last year after being released by English Premier League club West Brom.

The former Dundee United midfielder and Hibs missed out on promotion to the top flight last season.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila refused to talk about Allan or any players with other clubs when asked on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, defender Liam Fontaine has agreed a new two-year contract to remain with Hibs, who have also confirmed the departures of striker Franck Dja Djedje and midfielder Scott Robertson.

The 29-year-old Fontaine joined Hibs last summer after being released by Bristol City and the Englishman made 38 appearances last season as they finished runners-up in the Scottish Championship.

Dja Djedje, previously of Dinamo Minsk, joined Hibs in January and scored three goals in 15 appearances, most from the substitutes’ bench.

But the 29-year-old former Ivory Coast Under-23 international who started his career with Paris St Germain has come to an agreement to cut short his contract a year early and has signed for Al-Shahania, who play in the Qatar Stars League.

Robertson, capped twice for Scotland, joined Hibs in January 2013 after leaving Blackpool and the 30-year-old made 87 appearances for the Edinburgh side, including 41 last season.

Organised crime, depends on what side you are looking at it from.

Sky IMO is a form of organised crime, as are every banking institution and government.

As for watching Celtic without paying murdoch and his corrupt organisation.

Why not subscribe to Celtic TV and invest a couple of quid on a ISP blocker, then you will get the games live.

    Makes sense to me.

That Blogger said Phil gets ONE MILLION hits a month. Would that be correct? If so, any idea how many individuals actually visit Phil`s site?

I am of the opinion that the MSSM still holds sway over the Great Unwashed. It is only on sites such as CQN that I see any evidence of a small percentage of the public gradually learning to ignore the ramblings of the MSSM but the majority are still `guided` by the BBC,STV, Daily Record, The Scotsman etc and the various radio stations.

As money is always a major factor, more and more information re these Boxes which allow access to free streaming of a high quality just MIGHT lead to a significant move , in Scotland, away from Sky but, at present, they have done their job here by convincing many that the EPL really is a must see ( made easier by the demise of Rangers and the MSSM`s insistence that Scottish football is rubbish without THEM).

In a small town like Arbroath,I know of at least TEN people who have Season Tickets for Old Trafford. I can only put that down to media propaganda and gullibility.
