Dangerous expectations at pivotal weekend

408

There is a belief in football that the seemingly small game after a significant victory is dangerous.  Players psych themselves up for a big and important task, but they are not machines.  When that task is achieved, the mental energy for the next game is never the same.

You, me and everyone at Celtic knew the incredible importance of last week’s games at Tynecastle and Easter Road.  Neil Lennon got his second tenure off to a winning start and then kept the treble treble dream alive.  The expectation that we will beat Aberdeen tomorrow is overwhelming.

I don’t like this scenario.  Aberdeen will not compliantly roll over.  They are a better team than Hearts or Hibs and if we win, we will earn it the hard way.

This could be a weekend the league pivots.  If Newco drop points at Easter Road tonight and Celtic win tomorrow, the remainder of the campaign will be like a procession.  But if this scenario is reversed, every game will be played under intense pressure until the lead is extended.

Neil Lennon’s Hibernian took four points from Newco within a week in December, significantly weakening their challenge.  New manager, Paul Heckingbottom, will know that tonight he has an opportunity to put a stake of personal credibility in the ground.

GREENPINATA – aye – that’s good. Quick poll in the office (all ladies apart from me) – none have heard of it.

Just read the wiki stuff on it. “…Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Director of Women and Culture of Peace Ingeborg Breines said of IMD, “This is an excellent idea and would give some gender balance…”.

Scottish men fare even worse than the average – we die 5 YEARS before our female equivalents.

Think about that – each and every man – on avarage – FIVE years of life less – man, now THAT is perhaps the biggest issue of inequality we face.

  3. Our Wage Bill increased in line with the size of the squad. We had 40 players in the First team Squad with only 18 stripped for each match day and only max 14 used. I reckon we had 22 un-used players each game. The wages for these players who didn’t contribute are around £11m, more than half the Dembele fee. Brendan wasted money on loads of players. He signed 28 players for Celtic but generally only used 4 of his signings left by Ronny.

Celtic backed Brendan financially and he spent the money on wages instead of transfer fees.

That’s why our wage bill has doubled. Numbers of players signed which also blocked young players getting in the 1st team squad

I once remember watching a documentary on Barca and Cruyff. He was talking about when Barca asked him to take control of the team and he said if you want to play the way I want to play you have to adapt the whole club to my system, Boys, youths reserves everything. They all eat the same and train the same so that there is a natural progression into the team.

He went on to say this may take up to 15 yrs to achieve.

The president at the time agreed and as far as I’m aware Cruyff’s methods are still employed today.

I mention this as over the last few yrs I along with most fans will have noted that the quality of our academy players appears to be getting better each yr on yr, whereas a few yrs ago, with the odd exception most would move on to the likes of Ross county, Dundee or lower league English sides. Whereas now we seem to be producing 1st team players on a regular basis.

I think it was Lions67 who told me our youth system is modelled on the French system and it’s probably been going now for about 10+yrs(someone will know the exact timescale), so if we take what Cruyff said we should now be producing top notch youngsters, which does seem to be the case with the emergence of some fantastic academy players. Could we produce a team of mostly home grown players to rival what Ajax appear to do on a regular basis?

I also wonder if our recent foray into buying French youngsters, Moussa, Eduard and Olly has anything to do with this?

    Anyway just a thought.

Btw there is a collection tomorrow at the Aberdeen game for a memorial to An Gorta Mor, I’ll be there with my Grandkids shaking my bucket(as opposed to kicking it), so if you see us please donate any spare change you can afford. It is a fantastic cause

  9. I just dont get why Sevco have spooked us this year. We had a horrible start to the campaign and fell back to everyone elses standard . We puled our socks up after Xmas and are doing what we so.

  12. Morelos is much improved to the point of being physically strong and technically ‘awright’. Throw into the mix the fact the he only gets one get out of four cards deserved and he’ll be a bull in a china shop nuisance in any games we face him in.

He’s no longer the joke figure we cheered onto pitch…..but he’s still a ****!

Similar pedigree to Cosgrove at Aberdeen – both actually good in parts but fatally weak in others.

EPL teams have money but aren’t daft. No one there would risk him.

Championship side might take a punt at £4 million.

In a few hours time I shall be twenty-seven grand years of age. Paradoxically it will be a happy enough birthday; perhaps that’s because I am free in spirit. I can offer no other reason.

I was at Mass today, and saw all the lads minus their beards, etc. An American priest said Mass and I went to Communion. One of the lads collapsed before Mass, but he’s all right now. Another was taken out to Musgrave military hospital. These are regular occurrences.

I am 60.8 kgs today, and have no medical complaints.

I received another note from my sister Bernie and her boyfriend. It does my heart good to hear from her. I got the Irish News today, which carried some adverts in support of the hunger-strike.

There is a stand-by doctor who examined me at the weekend, a young man whose name I did not know up until now. Little friendly Dr Ross has been the doctor. He was also the doctor during the last hunger-strike.

Dr Emerson is, they say, down with the ‘flu… Dr Ross, although friendly, is in my opinion also an examiner of people’s minds. Which reminds me, they haven’t asked me to see a psychiatrist yet. No doubt they will yet, but I won’t see him for I am mentally stable, probably more so than he.

I read some wild-life articles in various papers, which indeed brought back memories of the once-upon-a-time budding ornithologist! It was a bright pleasant afternoon today and it is a calm evening. It is surprising what even the confined eyes and ears can discover.

I am awaiting the lark, for spring is all but upon us. How I listened to that lark when I was in H-5, and watched a pair of chaffinches which arrived in February. Now lying on what indeed is my death bed, I still listen even to the black crows.

    Are you for real ?

The CEO deals with wages and contracts, to attempt to spin that BR was responsible for Pedro’s failings is a joke, he dished out the contracts, the contracts that are so good the players are happy to drain money from the club for breathing.

  22. Will Rodgers sign Merelos? Discuss

Not a fecking chance. A manager who appreciates the skills of Moussa and Eddy would not contemplate spending money on a poor mans Chris Boyd (Remember the player the SMSM had down as being as good as Henke). How many goals did fatty Boyd score in the SPL? How many did he score when he left the confines the SPL? Morelos is his modern equivalent.

  23. mike in toronto on

someone will pay money for Morelos …

remember Islam Simani? No… neither do I, but not long ago Leicester paid 30 million pounds for him and he hardly scored (although he had done well in Portugal for a few seasons)

BR also paid $35 million quid for Christian Benteke, who left Pool after one season I think

will the zombies get 20 million for him… not a chance… but they will get more than 4 million I suspect.

  24. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Not a bad bit of business. The player will get his wages up to nearer a third of his understudy, the club (sorry, holding company) will get a release clause for selling and all before ST renewal time so the gullibles will think he will still be there next season!

  25. The english have quite rigorous criteria re foreign players, Morelos doesn’t qualify in any way whatsoever for a licence to play down south, this will slash whatever monies the huns get for him big time.
